"Where is 2.80777 02420? Surely Dr. Rand would not wish to neglect the area between the graph of the reciprocal Gamma function, and the positive x axis. He seemed so excited about it when we discussed it last year over a piece of pi at that little cafe in Vienna."

What the Hell? 68 pages of reviews. The most random crap I've ever seen, too. I bet YTMND was behind this...

Hey, don't laugh. This book is widely used in various domains where random numbers are necessary. You take your RAND, open it at a random page, point your finger anywhere and take as many digits as you want. I never got my chance to get one of these icons in engineering's history, but bringing me back that memory might incitate me to grab one!

1 million random generated numeral digits. It was published in the fifties, at an era when generating random numbers wasn't that easy. To help mathematicians, engineers, etc, requiring random numbers, the RAND institute, a non-profit organization involved in R&D published this book.

There's no perfect way to generate random numbers, because true random in computers doesn't exist. The RAND method with this book is however considered as one of the most random number generation methods. Simply because it mixes 2 interfaces : the computer one, with the randomly generated numbers in the book, and the human aspect, in flipping the book to a random page and pointing to a random number.

Good luck trying to reverse-engineer any random number sequences created with that. This is why many institutions still trust the RAND book method over any algorithms.

Oh and for your curiosity, the "book" in .zip (0.6 MB) http://www.rand.org/pubs/monograph_.../digits.txt.zip
