Harpalos was watching his clock display aboard La
Crypte, waiting for ZaneZavin’s transmission. Secretive as always, he
only said that he thinks he discovered an anomaly in the Matrix. Chaos
theory states that the cohesion of the universe is due to a series of
anomalies, but it wasn’t time to elaborate more on that. The impact of
an anomaly depends strongly on the environment in which it exists. The
quest of ZaneZavin was far in his head now, as he downloaded a
scientific article about chaos theory that he never took time to fully
dissect : Finding a Horseshoe on the Beaches of Rio, by Professor
Stephen Smale, an elite in non-linear mathematics.

He finally got the message, and it brought more questions than answers:
“Harpalos,
I think I found something interesting. I’ll give you some coordinates,
come here quick, and ask StaticZero to come by. I can’t tell you more
about this, but what is an avatar?”

((This is the first post of a new player event, presented by

Bosatsu was checking the power regulators when Stratos called out his name.

“Son of a--” he exclaimed, startled by his Operator’s voice and slamming his head against one of the crossbeams.

Struggling to ignore the Roman Candles going off behind his eyes, Bosatsu made his way over to the monitor array, rubbing the top of his head vigorously.

“What,” he snapped, “the hell is so important, I end-up nearly knocking myself out?”

Stratos stifled a chuckle and pointed towards the monitor on the far right. “Encrypted transmission from the La Crypte.”

Bosatsu turned his attention to the message, a deep green against the silent black. “What does Harpalos want now?” Then smiling, he looked at Stratos. “You know, for a science and math guy, he sure is talkative.”

Bosatsu read the message, his face becoming tighter. Not certain he grasped it correctly the first time, he scanned the text once again. Sighing more out of concern than frustration, he dropped into the chair and rubbed his temples.

“You want me to pull us out of Broadcast Depth and meet up with them?”

“Huh? What’s going on?” a rich, female voice inquired from behind them.

Bosatsu turned and regarded ThreeD from where she had just ascended the deck ladder. Tall and attractive, with a complexion like mother of pearl framed by the deep red of her hair, her green eyes contained both a fire and intelligence that Bosatsu found intoxicating.

“See for yourself,” he replied, indicating the monitor.

ThreeD scanned the message, then turned and looked at him.

“So, what do you want to do?”

Bosatsu couldn’t resist a chuckle. “Well, I want to say screw it, and just stick with my original intentions to go back Collecting. I want to transfer Stratos and the crew to a new ship, head back to Zion, and grow old in some semblance of peace. However, since the Powers of Universe are obviously conspiring against me on that front, I guess we’re going to rendezvous with Harpalos and the others.”

“You think this could be something dangerous?”

“I think I am working too damned hard at trying to establish this balance between the two worlds to take any risks.” Then, turning to Stratos: “Let the La Crypte know that ThreeD and I are jacking-in. Make sure Harpalos and the others know to meet us at the usual place. I want to know exactly what is going on.”

“I’m on it,” he said, turning back to his station, fingers flying over the keys.

Bosatsu turned to ThreeD and indicated the nearby platforms. “After you,” he said, bowing melodramatically.

ThreeD shook her head and smiled at his attempted humor, then mounted the chair and awaited the slip-slide spiral into another world.

The sky was a rolling, angry mass of ionization and heavy storms where the Enforcers’ Hovercraft moved into Broadcast Depth on the outskirts of what was once known as West Germany. Sentinels, the enormous, squid-like guardians of the Machines’ interest in the Real World, moved with a deft determination as they undulated through the thick atmosphere. Moving slowly around the vessel in a reconnaissance pattern, they took measure of its position and active systems to report back to Zero-One. Although the Truce remained in effect, the Machines were nothing if not pragmatic. It was only a matter of time before they could move once again. And, as always, they would be prepared.

Deep inside the protective shell of the vessel, however, there were greater concerns than the morbid curiosity of a few robotic investigators.

Staticzero, Captain of the ship and Field Coordinator for the Fleet known as Consequence, narrowed his eyes as he scanned the encrypted transmission from Harpalos aboard the La Crypte. Pursing his lips, his mind racing, he nodded to himself and rose from his chair.

“The Sentinels are moving on, Captain. Heading North by North-West.”

“That’s fine,” Staticzero replied dismissively. “For the time being, they aren’t our concern. But we now have something that might be.” Drawing himself up to his full height, he clasped his hands behind his back and addressed his crew. “I just got a communiqué from the La Crypte. Looks like we may finally have something worth looking into for a change, so expect a slight alteration to our plans. I will update your new insertion points once I meet with the other Captains and find out exactly what is going on. In the meantime, stick to the normal routes, and I’ll see you all in the inside.”

Staticzero didn’t wait for their replies as he turned on his heel and moved towards the Loading Platforms.

“ I want all Channels clear,” he said, as the Operator moved into position just behind his head. “And watch the area closely.”

The Operator feigned indifference, but the slight increase in respiration told Staticzero otherwise. “What are you expecting to happen?” The Operator asked.

“I’m not exactly sure. Harpalos’ message wasn’t entirely clear. Just a bit . . . intense.”

The Operator didn’t reply as he inserted the Neural Interface into the jack in the back of Staticzero’s skull.

A quick falling sensation . . . a grating on the skin as if by artic winds . . .A blast of intense heat to follow . . . then . . .there!

Staticzero unlocked the front door and stepped out of the small television repair shop. It was night in The Matrix, the full moon only partially obscured by the thick fog that seemed to cover the place ever since Neo’s Sacrifice. He drew a deep breath and released it, twice. Then, quickly surveying his surroundings to get his bearing, Staticzero turned left and started making his way to the rendezvous point.

Security wasn’t a problem as Staticzero made his way into the office building that served as one of the clandestine staging areas for the Consequence Fleet within The Matrix. Taking the elevator to the 11th floor, Staticzero opened the doors to the conference room and found Harpalos, ZaneZavin, Bosatsu, and ThreeD seated around the large, oak table.

“Nice of you to finally grace us with your presence,” Bosatsu commented as Staticzero closed the doors behind him.

Ignoring Bosatsu, he turned his attention to Harpalos. “So, what’s going on? Your message didn’t give me a hell of a lot to go on.”

“That’s because I don’t really know what it is I found,” ZaneZavin cut in.

“Huh?” Staticzero replied, more confused than ever.

ZaneZavin sighed. “I was running our routine scans of The Matrix . . . you know . . . the normal hum-drum, when I came upon one seriously weird Anomaly.”

“Weird, how?”

“I don’t know. It wasn’t a Redpill, and it sure wasn’t an Exile. But certain things about its readings reminded me of both. So, I approached it.”

“You made contact without first alerting the Fleet?” Staticzero asked, a mixture of irritation and shock.

ZaneZavin shrugged. ‘Like I said, the thing was weird.” Then, seeing the expression on Staticzero’s face: “Hey, what would’ve you preferred, that I didn’t and the thing turned out to be some Doomsday Virus we let get away?”

“All right,” Staticzero sighed. “So, what did you learn?”

“Not much, only that it calls itself Avatar.”

“Avatar?” Bosatsu repeated.

ZaneZavin nodded. “Now . . . what the heck is an Avatar?”

Bosatsu started to open his mouth, but Harpalos beat him to it. “Bon,” he began. “I conducted some research into the meaning of the word Avatar.”

“I could have saved you the time,” Bosatsu said dryly, but Harpalos ignored him and continued.

“Nothing in the Matrix is here without a purpose, and a name like that for a program surely must have a reason. In Hinduism,” and Harpalos cast a quick glance at Bosatsu, who just nodded, “an avatar is the bodily incarnation of an Immortal Being. For example, Vishnu, the supreme God, had avatars like Rama and Krishna to act as interfaces with humans.” Harpalos looked around the table carefully and considered everyone’s expression. “The word actually derives from the Saskrit word for ‘descent’, and usually implies a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. Now what relation the academic and theological definitions have with a program, I do not know. I'm good in semantic, but without knowing our subject, we can't really learn more. I think it would be useful to study it. If this anomaly was revealed to us, it could be because it actually has a message to tell us.”

“That’s just great,” Bosatsu commented. “As if we don’t have enough to worry about, not we have something calling itself an Avatar running around.”

“I agree,” Staticzero responded. “This is a concern.”

“No. You don’t understand. We already know many things in The Matrix represent the myths and dark places of the Human Psyche. Vampire, Ghosts, Lycanthropes, et cetera. We already know it is possible for some . . . programs . . . even Exiles, to survive the various reboots The Matrix has suffered. Take Merovingian, for instance. Not to mention the discovery of the Archivists and the existence of bits and pieces of previous incarnations of The Matrix. My concern is that this thing could actually represent something of potent power, something representative of another aspect of . . . a Higher Power.”

“Well, it seemed a bit scared and confused,” ZaneZavin pointed out.

“Forgive me if I am not completely convinced,” Bosatsu retorted.

“Then we definitely need to find this thing,” Staticzero agreed.

“And let me make one thing perfectly clear to everyone present, “Bosatsu continued. “Yes, we are going to track down this . . . Avatar. But regardless of whether or not the Professor,” he nodded towards Harpalos, “wants to dissect the thing or not. If it is a danger, I am going to annihilate it.” And he looked into the eyes of the other Captains. “No matter what.”

ThreeD merely nodded in acquiescence. Everyone knew her loyalties began and ended with Bosatsu and The Ascension.

“Your feelings are duly noted, Bosatsu,” Staticzero replied, maintaining control over his own, growing irritation. “But let’s take this one step at a time. We don’t know what it is, or what it represents. So, the first thing we are going to do is track it down and get some answers. Now, Harpalos, I want you to . . . .”

Staticzero began outlining the plan for how they would once again find the Avatar.

Technology
had radically changed from the 20th century to now... In his bluepill
days, Harpalos was quite skillful in coding. Taking a complete program
and put it in function was called deploying, and it was a task getting
more and more difficult as the complexity of the program increased. But
now, he had  a program with a size that could only be counted in
yottabytes (10^24 bytes) with the old notation. Thanks to the anomaly
ZaneZavin had found, he could download the core of the Avatar program.
This was a tedious operation. Data mining huge chunks of data like that
was quite a process, but thanks to the isolation of the program, it was
possible under the machine radar.

During the next 12 hours
required for the download, Harpalos was reading a book obtained from
his Bookwyrm friends in the City Public Library about simulacrum
programming. Once the program download would be completed, it would be totally
useless without a shell to be run on. However, he rapidly understood
that the complexity of a simulacra depends on the complexity of the
operations you bind to it. And from the first overview, Avatar would
require a lot of work… And curiosity isn’t something that fits
well with patience.

A few calls to some exile
contacts in the Matrix allowed him to find someone who could make the
work done at a much faster rate. For a price, of course. Since the
introduction of the automation in assembly lines, humanity has
understood that sometimes there’s nothing better than a machine to do
your work. And Harpalos didn’t have the willingness to engage in this
tedious process. He didn't have all this info on him, so he had to ask StaticZero. He hesitated, but finally agreed for the
almost complete withdrawal of the faction savings to pay for the
reconstruction of the Avatar program. Harpalos accepted the offer and
sent the requested 150 000 000 $i.

Now, everything
was into the hands of his contact. The estimated time of delivery was
9PM EST. A precious package like that needed appropriate handling, so
StaticZero requested the assistance of some of the best members of
Consequence to retrieve this package. Rumors travel fast in the Matrix
however, and it looks like others also want to learn what is Avatar…

((This is the first in-game open event of this player event, so we’re quite excited to see how this will go.
As
stated in this post, the Avatar will be delivered today (10/25), at 9PM
EST. Any people interested in participating in the retrieval party can
contact StaticZero and explain why they would be interested in
assisting Consequence for this mission. Note : this is open to all
levels and all organizations))

A frantic call from Staticzero jarred me from my stupor... "I need your
help," he said. Staticzero was an old friend, so I couldn't say no. A
quick teleport to the waterfront at Uriah and I found myself amongst
some of my merovingian brothers and sisters (mostly from the Consequence faction) and a contingent of machines from the
Tetragrammaton faction. I was told to secure the area, a new "entity" was
entering the matrix and we couldn't let the gangs get to it.

Here are some of my observations of the events that took place tonight:

Avatardux was its name. In a male's body, we will for the sake of
humanity call it a him... He showed up shirtless; a fedora and pants
were his clothing. We all found him a little odd at first, spewing
strange emotional statements that made no logical sense, as if he were
channeling many different personalities. Questions were thrown at him
from everyone attending the "birth" and he was unable to offer any
coherent answers. His answers ranged from nonsensical feelings to
computer jargon about emotional interface versions.

Some quotes from the new entity:

"I hate all of you and your kind…"

"The accident to my boyfriend destroyed me, assassin…"

AvatarDux giggles like a schoolgirl.

"My kitty!!!"

He’s in the car, no!! Gizmo!!!

AvatarDux cries.

*Loading answer, please wait *

*Avatar v45.8. Emotional interface *

At first it seemed that he was acting as a program struggling to contend
with losing the billions of inputs he had been used to parsing. He
lacked a purpose and a destination. We wandered the streets of Uriah,
and Staticzero suggested we head towards Mara. Unable to run, Avatar was not only
vulnerable to the violent gangs, but also the weight of free will and choice. The merovingians and machines worked
together to help the stray program survive. Several of the
Tetragrammaton attempted to hack the Avatar's protected memory, but to
no avail.

After several painfully long, reboots, defrags and slow loading cycles,
Avatar became lucid and self aware. He spoke of his prior role in the
machinery of the matrix. In his former existence, he controlled the
emotions of bluepills. His role was to provide choice to the "sleeping"
by way of
their emotions. His entry to the matrix was preceeded by an overload
event that remains a mystery. He was however aware of his successor,
Avatarducce who presumably is the new controller of emotions.

Some quotes from Avatar:

"My name is Avatar. I control human emotions. Well it looks like not anymore."

"I remember all I did since Avatar v45.1 was loaded. I have active
threads from 188 993 098 436 784 individuals loaded in my RAM"

"I remember most of you"

To some of the Tetragrammaton, it appeared that Avatar was a
malfunctioning program that either needed to be reinserted or
destroyed. The exiles offered sanctuary and welcomed Avatar to his new incarnation.

After some coaxing, we led Avatar to the Church in Mara Central, to the
santuary of Sister Margaret. His sleep process was impending and we
needed to get him to a safe place. He was unable to use a hardline so
he requested a computer and a random number generator. With a computer
in hand he disappeared.

In summary...

We successfully escorted Avatar to Sister Margaret in Mara Central. He
is safe for now. It appears that the Avatar has responded to the exiles offer
to teach him about his new existence in the matrix. He is a stray
program that needs a mentor to lead him on his path of choice and free
will. He is a sentient with no purpose. My warning to you: he is ripe for the picking.

As the representative of the machine organization in this matter. I will speak my thoughts. This "Sentient" has clearly stated that he is no longer the controller of emotions, and so this must be true since the matrix remains somewhat stable. The bluepills have no lost control of their thoughts, and no abnormal dream states have been reported as yet by our medical contacts within the megacity hospitals and clinics. However, now free... This new Exile, AvatarDux, is a threat to the order of the matrix. Reinsertion to the source is mandatory. If he does not comply, a time will be scheduled for his prompt deletion.

Un deux, un deux test. Seems working. Ah, I feel ridiculous doing that…

Captain
log, well, number 1. Working with new scientific breakthroughs requires
a systematic approach toward the quality of the various artifacts used
for documenting a research process. For the good of the scientific
community, I’ll detail here my workings with the Avatar program.

The
Avatar program was retrieved yesterday, freshly implanted in it’s new
“shell”. A complex simulacra was used to store the Avatar program onto,
so it would be possible to communicate with. Without this operation,
this program would have certainly be eliminated since an other version
of the Avatar system overrode the version 45.8 of the program. He
presented himself to me as AvatarDux, and stated that he had limited
knowledge about it’s successor, AvatarDucce.

The
Avatar program seems to be used to simulate emotional choice for
humans. Based on the number of data stored in his system, he actually
has the thoughts or thousands billion individuals, which seems huge
when compared to the estimate human population in the real world. I’ve
tried to gain access to this code, but everything is encoded with a
very complex internal algorithm. However, Avatar knows how to access
data about a certain individual. During my experiments on him, he
remembered me about important moments that I lived through my bluepill
life.

The algorithm of functionality of the Avatar
program seems pretty strange compared to every other program. The
coding standards are the same than usual Matrix programs, but the
implementation is very different from other systems. All that I know is
that the Avatar program is based on memory stack cycles. At the start
of each cycle, he must get a new series of randomly generated numbers
to help for his memory allocation. Failing to do so creates corrupted
fragments into his code, and might be the reason of his extremely
erratic behaviour at the time of his retrieval. Once the size of his
memory stack is too low, he starts reusing fragmented memory segments,
and get very confused. To solve that, Avatar needs to “sleep”, an
unusual method for a program, which consists in emptying his memory
stack and getting a new series of random numbers. A PDA was assigned to
him so he can manually generate his new random series.

As it is now, Avatar is an somewhat stable program, but got all his intelligence and learns really fast about human behaviour.  He
told me that every choice he takes has to be based on thousands of
internal calculations and parameters analysis. I’ve tested that
however, and I’ve asked 15 times the same question : “If you had to
pick your favourite person since you took this shape, who would you
pick?”. Most times, it was a new answer. Some names came out more than
often. Avatar is presently building it’s own personality like a new
born baby, and he’s very curious to meet new people. To help that, I’ve
implanted simple programs that will help him to fade into the
population, and get along more with others.  His
desire for now is to be free, and especially to find his purpose. He
talked to me a lot about it, and I’ve recommended him to find his new
purpose now that he’s free.

I’ve also requested
the Merovingian to accept Avatar as an exile, and to extend his
protection on him. I’ll be waiting for his answer any time from now.

This
is all I managed to learn from him for now. We agreed to meet again
soon so I can examine him. He’s free for now, but Consequence will keep
an eye on him. There is much more to learn about him, and with a
knowledge that large about human experience, Avatar could be an
invaluable knowledge resource that we must learn to harness.

Captain log, eh 2.

It
appears that letting Avatar free was a bad idea. His inner algorithm
was perfect for dictating emotional choice to others, but confronted to
his own decisions, it brought it’s downfall. I could have predicated
it, but didn’t felt it was worth noticing. When I studied him, I saw
that contrary to all programs, this one didn’t have 1 central
processor, but 3. One for each fundamental source of emotions : the
head, the heart, the instincts. When faced to a choice, those 3 parts
were all giving an answer, and the central Avatar program had to select
which one was more applicable. However, during his party, the decision
literally torn him apart.

Based on my faction
comrades reports, Avatar had spent a lot of time in his own party
speaking with Beachhead, leader of the Tetragrammaton, instead of
making fun with his friends. He spoke to me fondly of them, and he felt
more close to the Machines than to others. I had always thought that
Avatar would have been a good ally in our ranks, but as a faction we
decided that we should let Avatar find his own way. We respected his
choice of giving allegiance to the machines, but I know that he feared
that this would prevent him from keeping friendship with his other
friends, particularly CheshireCat, Buoyancy, Jacbenimble, and of course
we in Consequence. So from what I understood, each processor wanted to
ally with someone different. But in the end, logic won.

During
the party, Nemases, the Consequence first lady, got a call telling that
the Merovingian was ready to accept AvatarDux in his ranks. When she
mentioned that to Avatar, I suspect that inside him the deciding
process had put the 3 processors too much in conflict, and they decided
to separate instead of finding the best solution. AvatarDux was no
more, and got replaced by 3 separate instance of the Avatar program,
exempt from the inner conflict however :

AvatarInferro, the logical
AvatarCupido, the wild
AvatarDevotio, the passionate

Based
on that strange Merovingian controller, Kuchenko, he was supposed to
invite one into the Merovingian’s ranks, not 3. Time will tell what
should be done.

fact, you will have a say in what should be done. Starting next week,
the “player” part of “player event” starts really. If you thought that
the first part was interesting, you’ll really like the second. Be on
the lookout in this forum for more details about the next steps! Oh,
and a huge thanks to all those that contributed for the first part of
the event! It was fun playing as AvatarDux with you! But now, take time
to learn more about his 3 spawns…))

Instructions for the Avatar survival challenge

Hello, humans. As you surely know for now, I am Kuchenko, controller
extraordinaire for the Merovingian. I was supposed to invite the
program AvatarDux into our ranks, but a little problem occurred, and in
fact I now have third times the problem since Avatar fractioned in 3.
The Avatar program is totally nuts, and therefore, I decided that it
should be better that only one of it’s instance can survive. And I’ve
designed a little plan that only a superior intellect can design.

During 2 weeks, I will put out a devious challenge almost everyday, and
the rules of the challenge will be put out on the same transmission
than here. They will be very varied since I want to see how pitiful you
can be in a variety of skills. Each person/team/faction that take out
the challenge will have to pick the Avatar for which they want to save.
There will be a compilation and at the end of the challenge, the Avatar
with the less good results will get an elimination point. At the end of
the 2 weeks, the 2 with the highest number of elimination points will,
at my pleasure, be deleted forever!

So listen to me, the first challenge will be Wednesday, so you’d better
decide which Avatar deserves your tiny help. I’ll be the judge for this
competition, and I don’t care which one will survive. If you have any
question, feel free to contact me in person (if you’re dare enough to
meet me) or send me a private message through this channel.

Challenge number 1 : The Merovingian's wardrobe

Here are the rules for the challenge for November 2

- The goal of the challenge is to bring me (Kuchenko) a complete outfit
(glasses, shoes, pants, shirt, outerwear, gloves, hat) for the
Merovingian. Only male items will be accepted.

- I will award 1 point for each time there's the letter M in the
outfit's items, to the Avatar you'll choose helping (AvatarDevotio,
AvatarInferro, AvatarCupido). For example, a Small Mauve Shirt would be
worth 2 points.

- Items must be brought to me before 11 PM EST tonight. I will be around accepting items between 10 PM and 11 PM.

- I will only accept 1 outfit by person.

- At the end of the evening, the Avatar with the less Ms counted in the outfits will get an elimination point.

Good luck,

Kuchenko

Thanks to the great turnoff for yesterday's event (absolutely no one
did anything), I've decided to give a one day extension. By the way,
everyone's invited to come tomorrow (nov 3) at Club Avalon, MIdian
Park, for a little meet and greet session with the Avatars. The details
of the current challenge will be explained again at 9PM.

Am I understood now?

Kuchenko

((Seriously, sorry for doing that... With tonight's zero participation,
we had 2 choices : abandon, or try a new structure. We're 4 working
very strong for this event, and we know there's a good potential in it.
I hope you'll be there tomorrow))

((If it weren't for the fact that i'm going away for the weekend, I would jump at the opportunity to take part - and would definately encourage others to do so.  This sort of event is exactly what the community needs, and is both a great opportunity for would-be RPers to "enter" the scene, as well as providing the much needed RP boost to our "veterans" or more established players.

The threads so far have been fantastic, and I have heard nothing but positive feedback from everyone involved in this event - so cmon everyone - do your bit for the community and take part! Hell, who knows, you might actually enjoy yourselves!))
