Customer Service/Dev team:

I wanted to use the name Janus on the Recursion server, but I got a message that said it contained language that might offend people (the word 'anus' in Janus). I think this is ridiculous, because Janus is not only a mythological character but also one of the moons of Saturn.

Now, in finding that instead of a "this character name is already taken" message, I got "The name you entered contains language that might offend people," I don't believe anyone else could have possibly taken the handle.

That said, can you bypass this and change my character name to Janus, much the same way the player known as Yahweh was changed to Archangel? Right now it's Jxnus, on the Recursion server.

Characters are only renamed if they in breech of the SOE naming policy as far as I'm aware. In any case, the best way to get a definitive answer for this is to either type /ccr in game and submit a petition there or go to http://support.station.sony.com/petition and submit a petition (both are the same place, just depends where you want to access it SMILEY)

If you go to http://support.station.sony.com/petition and then click on In-Game Support and then, if asked, log in with your station account details. If requested, confirm your email address and then on the page that loads:

Select The Matrix Online as the Product
Choose which ever category is appropriate (I'd probably go for General and General)
Type in the Server Name
Ignore Planet/Zone/Area
Type in your Character Name
Ignore the rest of the boxes if you like, or fill them in.

Type in an appropriate subject (naming enquiry/renaming enquiry ect)

Type in your question as you did here.

Then click continue at the bottom of the page.

Then (I think) you should see a confirmation page, then if you select Service History you will be able to see when somebody has replied to the question by clicking on Questions. You will also receive confirmation by email and be notified when someone replies.

... wait perhaps? SMILEY

It's not exactly a high-priority issue for the game mods.

And I believe Janus has either been taken or is on the reserved words list. I seem to recall seeing it around.

Couldn't have been taken by someone else, I didn't get "This name was taken," or "This name is reserved"

If I remember correctly the offensive name warning takes a higher priority than the name taken warning.

It is possible that both are the case.

Although I it is not too awfully clear in our naming ploicy (http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bi...p?p_faqid=16279) the fact that Janus is a Roman god it is not an approved name.

As  Archangel is both a title and a religous term I am surprised that Yahweh was renamed to that.

That sucks! How hypocritical! Morpheus is the Greek God of dreams, Niobe is another character of Greek mythology, as is Persephone, and I can't get the name of a moon/Roman god?!

Hello TheArk

We are talking about apples and oranges here, those are NPCs in the game and you are asking about player names.

Those names are established parts of the MXO universe and without those characters it is simply not "The Matrix".

Further if you look at the link I pointed to, you would see that  "7. Proper names from The Matrix OnlineTM, including the first or last name of any significant NPC in The Matrix Online (e.g. Matrix, Neo, Morpheus, The Oracle, Trinity, Agent Smith, Tank, Cypher" are also not allowed for player names.

It doesn't matter - names are names and this is the Matrix universe. The religious parallels are all over the place. You guys even have Agents running around with Angel wings.

Looks like I've got some complaining to do.

Hello TheArk,

No they are not the same those are names of NPC not player characters.

I have pointed you to the link of our published rules, those rules are not going to change.

Finally this is not a tech support issue, if you wish to discuss this further please post in the General Discussion forum.
