This is a question I have had for quite a while, and which I need to be answered so that everyone agrees, as I am using it in an upcomming story. What happens to the code of your RSI, or that of an unknown bluepill still in his or her little pods, when their bodies in the real have died and they are permanantly disconnected from the Matrix.

There is code involved. The code that is your appearance, and which governs your every action and reaction. Emotion. Memory. What happens to this code when you die. Does it get returned to the source, and if so, what triggers it to do so? Does it merge with the Floating Feast and wind up in the preverbial bellies of the exiles? Does it just hang around?

And for that matter, is the code of a bluepill who is deceased treated diffrently than that of a redpill? The machines can control the blue pills. They are physically linked to them. They know when one dies. That is not necessarily the case with a red pill, whose jack-in devices are out of the hands of the machines, and quite possible are of a diffrent design, with diffrent protocols. Where when a blue pill dies inside his pod, at the moment of death, a trigger is enabled that would take care of the remaining code, purging it from the system, the death of a redpill, who has code that also exists inside the matrix may not. That code may just... linger.

So that is the end-all be-all of my question. What happens when we die? I have never seen or read anything that could reasonibly explain it, and I am looking for an answer that can be used as canon, if possible.

IMO the code of a person's RSI in the Matrix doesn't carry emotions and memory ... it's merely an interface to them.

Think of it like a ..er ... airline booking system!

The RSI is the front page, the emotions & memories are the backend database.

If the database (person) is disconnected (killed) then there is no way
of getting to the information. Likewise the front page (RSI) on its own
is useless, as it has no real data.

However there is probably a 'cache' of sorts between interfaces, so
that in some situations some memories may be retained for a time.

Neo was the exception to the rule of course, he had 802.11g SMILEY

As for the code of the RSI itself, I read long ago the 'official'
description of Reconstructing. Basically the code of the RSI is
rebooted, pulled out of the Matrix and remade in the loading construct.

If an RSI death is forced - given the redpill and removed from the
Matrix - the system itself deals with this code by returning it to the
Source (or other form of Recycle Bin) - theoretically the Matrix is
made up of the same code throughout so it should be able to be reused)

It must know a person has died and where their respective RSI is. There
is no knowledge on exactly how the Matrix monitors its charges, so we
can't know how they tag them.

In actual bluepill deaths, they can't really do anything. It has to be
buried or cremated, and in case of burial, the body needs to remain in
its grave.

The actual death of a redpill though ... I don't know. I would assume
the operator of a ship has some sort of override code that can destroy
an empty RSI shell (Apoc, Switch, etc.) - the case of Morpheus is
interesting as he apparently had no operator.

Assuming that WAS him - maybe the RSI deconstructs itself eventually, much like a human body decomposes.

Assuming it WASN'T ... well, that's outside the scope of this SMILEY

If the RSIs were left there they would be found and a police investigation might take place and I don't think zion would want the bluepills to be involved.

Involved in what?  The police find the dead bodies of wanted criminals.  Does Zion want their soldiers to be on Most Wanted lists long after they're dead?

When you die, the fairys come and collect your soul, so they can take
you to the farm, where you are forced to milk the cow.....for all
eternity...

Thanks LP... that is exactly the kind of answer I am looking for. I am really not concerned about the bodies in the real... dead is dead there, i am primarily looking for what the Matrix does or does not do with the code... how they treat it. How the recycle or despose of it and how they are notified the RSI needs to be dealt with. I may go to that site FeralBoy posts at and see if there is anything there.

As for everyone else, than you for responding as well. I always fully support spam. Especially in any thread I create.

It most likely decays like every other body.  The police would do an autopsy, probably find no cause of death if it was someone pulling the plug out of the redpill's head (unless pulling the plug results in brain damage that corresponds with a normal cause of death).  Then I guess it's up to the police to bury the body, cremate it, donate it to science, etc.

Dignity? Respecting the dead?
A redpill RSI perhaps won't decay upon death because it's no longer tied to the laws of the system - having a dead body that never decays hanging around is asking for trouble

The Matrix is a system built upon rules and regulations. Human beings and animals (not the coded ones, but any that might be alive in the Real), possessing souls and free will unique to their... kingdom, I guess, are able to bend or ignore some of those rules. Bodies, lacking free will, and even consciousness, are merely objects - programs that do, rather predictably, exactly what they're supposed to do.

When someone dies in the Matrix, their RSI code changes from human code (which can be caused to do unpredictable things via the mind of its host) to body code (which behaves normally - essentially lying there and generally decomposing as such things tend to do). Thus, a redpill body bears no difference to that of a bluepill body, or the like.

Selected Exiles and Agents present an exception to this. As in the cases of the Assassin and Invalesco (the Exiles known to have been destroyed thus far), their bodies simply disintigrated or dispersed, in accordance with the manner of their being (Invalesco turned to ash, the Assassin simply exploded in a cloud of dead blowflies). Agents, of course, don't really leave bodies, as they vacate the bluepill they are inhabiting upon death. They do, however, leave bluepill bodies, supporting the theory that all dead humans leave bodies, regardless of the manner of their connection to the Matrix.

Now, obviously the auto-jackout-whatchamacallit presents some sort of difficulty... I like to think that the RSI is tied to the controlling intelligence, and no duplicate RSIs are allowed to exist within the Matrix (not counting identical twins, which there seem to be an awful lot of within the System... SMILEY ). Thus, when an RSI is reconstructed and remade, the code is pulled from the "dead" RSI of that same departed host. This explains where the code to create a brand new body comes from.

It also, interestingly enough, explains that pesky "character in use" error. Obviously, the Matrix sees your body within the System, and will not let you enter while it continues to inhabit space. SMILEY

So, in recap: When you die, your RSI stays there until a) the System cleans it up through decomposition and similar "natural" routines, or b) your mind recalls it to reconstruction and further existence, via the auto-jackout procedure. Agents and selected Exiles are exempt from this, as befitting the manner of their being.
