Due to the small size of our community, I think it would be best that the moderators of these forums not come from the community itself. It dosn't lend itself to impartial moderation or at least have them moderate areas of the forum not related to their in game characters. or hell maybe even just threads that their main accounts don't post in? Throw me a bone here?

I do think it's difficult for a moderator to moderate the forums while having friends there too. There's a conflict of interest. But maybe Moderators can simply be reminded every now and then that they're here to uphold the "forum guidelines", not "Forum Rules".
But this'll get locked, "Please contact Virrago if you have problems with moderators! Regards, mod00x".
