Those of you reading this, who follow the forums closely, also tend to be those who have most assiduously followed the daily events and weekly missions, and are perhaps the most strongly affected by these changes. While I cannot hope to replace perfectly the types of content you've seen in the past, I'll at least try to describe briefly the two main reasons why I believe this change is both necessary, and the right thing to do for the overall health of the game.
If you read the forums, you've probably read this passage from Rarebit.
I'm one of those people, described by Rarebit. Contrary to popular belief, I really only played the game to interact with the story. I've done a lot of things in the past, but I've always been a fan of the Matrix storyline. Of course, since the continuation of the story was using the medium of an MMO, I was drawn to it.
The fact that this game had Live Events every week-day seperated this game from the others. If I wanted to sit at my computer and grind quests all day by myself there's 15 other MMOs to do that. I just wanted the story, and while not every Live Event was perfect, just interacting with the Storyline characters was enough to keep me paying $15 a month; to see the storyline unfold.
It seems now since this "New Approach" everything is a shadow of its former-self. We still have LESIG supposedly, but why bother communicating with them, because they're no longer outlets of information anymore. Apparently, there are rare "ghost" LEs that occur every once and a while during a blue moon. Now we have "Org Meetings" which are just Q&A sessions that all end in, "That information is classified.." and "Server Parties" which honestly are boring as all get-out. Of course the cinematics have returned, but no offense to Rarebit, I would rather have the old system back than these cinematics. They're great, don't get me wrong, but they only reinforce the fact that the only 'story progression' we're getting is every 6 weeks along with more clothes or something.
It just seems that Rarebit is striving to make this game more like a "quest grinding MMO with content" where'd you have something to go do if there was no live event, but let's not kid ourselves. The Matrix Online has never been a game where everyone would PvE at level 50. It was either RP, PvP, or when the occasional patch came out everyone would PvE for the small amount of new items. In the mean time (which was the majority of the time) we would have story-continuing Live Events/Missions that would tide us over.
When I mean "us" I guess I mean the "minority" of players who played this game for the story, and not the items or new constructs. I didn't mind the various drawbacks there was to keep up the old-system that produced a thriving storyline (albeit the twists and turns its had), but if the Live Events are gone, then I suppose I'm gone.
I'm not leaving, but I agree with every inch of this post.
"Second."
I'm giving Rarebit and company more time before I decide on the New Approach thing. Another big patch or two should be good enough.
But I for one logged in for the patch, got my gear in a couple of days, and didn't log back in with the exception of the org meetings and sat mostly alt+tabbed for that party. The only things that have really been keeping me with MxO are the friends I've made and the storyline. And, because the storyline doesn't seem to me as dynamic anymore and the LE character appearances with the exception of the Org meeting/party are getting sparser, I feel less and less compelled to play and stay subscribed. Even just seeing Ghost and reading his interaction with a random group of people was enough to make me read the whole LE post which I hadn't done in a long time. And if I don't log in on a regular basis, then I'm going to get out of the loop for when LEs happen and then slowly lose that which I liked most: talking to some big Character in the Matrix played by some crazy man. Even if nothing good came out of it, it was always fun.
I do not, however, play MxO for some fancy clothing that my character can wear, nor do I play for the PvP, player event shenanigans, shiny perpetual trinkets, some re-textured gun, or to kill the same NPC type with the same tactic that we've had for years over and over again. I seem to be paying to browse and post on the forums as of late, and that only stays entertaining for so long :P
I'm the kind of person who naturally assumes the opposing side of any argument for the sake of a balanced viewpoint.
I see nothing in this thread that I can argue with.
I'm in the minority, and I absolutely love the new approach. I have a lot more time now to chill out, play the game, party, chat with people, and actual be on my main character.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that LESIG is still around, be thankfully they barely appear.
If this doesn't continue, I will be extremely unhappy.

It has a unique sound too. >_>
I can't really disagree with what Ballak said, but I'll also give Rare more of a chance to run with this. And I'm never leaving anyway, so...

The only way I'd leave would be if something absolutely, positively horrible happened. Like finding out that the MxO servers are powered by the blood of newborns or something.

You didn't know about that?

The blood of newborn LESIG even! Ooeeoooeoo!
But yeah, I came to MxO from SWG... I came to MxO for the events. The events are gone, my account ends on the 20th... I shall be gone as well, and there shall be much rejoicicng/not-caringness. I thought I could stick around til the end, but for me, the end has come. If events come back to a regular basis, I shall come back, because my MxO will be back. I can get the story content for free through the forums via the cinematic downloads, so not really much reason for paying $15 a month for a chat room :o

No, that would make me pay for a year-long subscription.
I used to be logged in all day and night. Now I log in barely at all, for llike 10 minutes, get bored and leave. Events and friends were keeping me here, but thats all gone. I didn't think SOE could actually ruin this game anymore, but I was wrong. A few people and Rarebit love this new approach, but the majority were used to the way it was forever. I really hate to say it, but my sub will not be lasting after the Christmas Event.
This was and still is my plan. We've had one update with the new format and I, for one, cannot form any complete opinion on the format until Rare and co. have seen the reaction from players, evaluate what has been done and attempt to address any issues that have cropped up from this initial update.
If, after a couple of updates, nothing has changed or improved thats when I'll start reconsidering my feelings on the subject. I think that's only fair to the Devs and to me.
Problem is, until the STO or SGW or KOTORO comes out I don't think there is any other MMO I'd be willing to play.
Can't really argue with the post, to be honest. I want to see how the Christmas event goes and the patch or two after it, but right now there's no motivation to log in besides the Vector Olympics. There hasn't been since the org meeting.
I would just like to congratulate Rarebit and Sony Online Entertainment for finally killing what could have been the best MMO ever.
I for one wont be back. If it hadnt been for the fact ive been so busy lately i would have cancelled my subscription.
