Microsoft Admits *ALL* Xbox360's Are Defective

Thursday, 12 July 2007

If you thought that Sony was the only console manufacturer having a really bad day, guess again. After many months of public complaints and outcries, Microsoft has publically admitted that *ALL* (as in every single one ever sold) Xbox360's have a design defect that can lead to their failure. Though Robbie Bach, head of Microsoft's Xbox360 Division refused to elaborate on the issue, the general consensus is that it's one of botched thermal design management and inadequate dissipation of heat leading to component failure. All of the nearly 12 million units currently in the hands of consumers are affected. Though Microsoft has not issued a global recall, they have tripled the warranty coverage period, and are expected to have to dole out over $1 Billion to correct the situation

3 years too late MS SMILEY

I was laughing at the 360 fanboy's though:

"It breaks because you dont give it any room to stay cool"
"PS3 has no games"
"PS3 is to expensive"
"Microsoft admit one little problem and all the PS3 fanboys unite to laugh"  (I'd hardly call my games console failing completely, 'little'SMILEY

And I dont think extendend warranty is helpful in the slightest as all they are doing it fixing the console, then sending it back out to someone else... so it is a awesome circle where all consoles will brick and brick and there will be nothing left.  SMILEY  They need to recall the defected 360s (which is all of them =O ), and fix the issue and replace them.

They also want to take note, console making is only for the Japanese.

Doesn't the Xbox have like a 33% failure rate?

nope, thats what the article is about. Microsoft has admitted that the 360 has 100% failure rate... kinda. Basicly what they are saying is 100% of them are defective and the defect will most likely cause them to fail sooner rather than later.

My first 360 red ringed in under six months. The replacment's been going strong for over a year or two now.

That said, the 360 is the *only* video game system that's ever died on me. Even my oldschool grey gameboy still works.

I had some problems with my ps2, once. But I was able to fix it. And I guess the new 360s have a more effecient processor in it, so it doesnt have the overheating problems.

But even at that, MS screwed people over. SMILEY

Yeah, I don't know if anything happened with the original Xbox either but in my experience they failed on a grand scale as well.  My roommate went through 3, other roommate went through 2, and I had to send mine in once as well.  Finally the one I have now won't even open anymore for some reason unless you pry open the disc slot.  And no it's not from poor care of the systems, this thing for example sits on a covered part of the TV stand and is dusted down once every two weeks.

IMO, Playstation in general will always be better than the Xboxes, the only reason to get a Xbox or 360 are games like Halo, Elder Scrolls etc...

Thats the thing, Sony do the better hardware without question.  If the software on the 360 is your thing (shooters, shooters and more bloody shooters >_< ) then if the 360 would hurry up and die then the software can be made on the more reliable console instead, then you have the best of both worlds.  Really reliable hardware and a huge variety of games.

I prefer the 360 to the PS3.
The RRoD is the only reason I've held off buying one though. Thank goodness Microsoft have finally acknowledged the issue properly. Maybe now they'll fix the design... nothing that a spot of ThermalTake cooling doesn't fix.

If I didn't have an irrational hatred for the entire MGS series and a very bad experience with the unstable pile of rubish that is the latest Tony Hawk release, I may feel differently... but I don't.

On the technical spec side of things the only thing that has influenced me so far is the xbox loads games much faster due to the blu-ray drive being slower, and is backwards compatible so tht I don't have to toss all my XBox 1 games.

as for problems in the past and the PS systems ALWAYS being superior... please.
fist generation PS2s had a design problem big enough that they had to redesign the machine... I had 4 that all had the DVD drive go bad and not just fail but physically destroy disks.
At least MS are fixing the broken consoles, The PS2s all failed 3 months after the warranty period and were only replaced when the ACCC got involved. Sony never admitted the design fault, but the Australian Govenment decared the 1st gen PS2s faulty, not suited for their marketed purpose, and that Sony must compulsorly refund or replace all faulty units.

The PS3 is a sexy machine, but I prefer the 360 games and that's it. Buy what you want and I'll buy what I want, but if everybody wants to make it a "wintel vs mac" style situation then all the logical arguments in the world might as well go in the bin because it will simply degenerate down to "which fanboi can shout loudest and longest".

As a high-rez media machine with blu-ray the PS3 wins... on the game front, and integration to existing Microsoft networks (home media servers and such) the 360 wins... for my tastes anyway.

Until this whole mess gets sorted and the 360 becomes reliable I'll stick with my PC and XBox running SSX3. SMILEY<img src=" />

I own both and while the PS3 is technically a stronger piece of hardware, the online experience with the 360 is just so much more intuitive. The PS3 price tag will always take a toll on its online components because so fewer people are going to be able to afford the system in the first place. I didn't feel like I was missing anything when I did not have a PS3, and only really bought it for MGS4. I stand by my decision to wait for it.

I purchased a 360 Elite and for what it's worth, I haven't had a single problem with it in the entirety of its life.

Mine died on me a while back, but the fact that they swapped it over and i had it back within a week or two was fine by me.

As for the whole Playstation Vs Xbox debate.

I always used to love playstation, i had PS1, PS2... Then i bought an Xbox after a year or two, and preferred that.

Then i bought my 360, and wouldn't consider buying a PS3 (maybe except for metal gear, but that's it).

Xbox live will always reign supreme.
