Well to be fully honest, I did the data minor thing..... and it sucks.
Its not really worth the effort or $ put into upgrading the skills. But
if it is something you really want to do then you need to get some
locator gogles, some data taping tools, and then walk around till you
find a node. From there get as close as you can, use your data tap tool
and see what happens. Most times you will fail, other times you will
successfully tap the node and get like a little bit of exp and like
50$. I have heard that downtown data nodes are good, never did try them
though. It wasnt a skill that put forth the potential that it sounded
like it had.

I load it up when I'm just meandering about.  Small amounts of info and XP are still better than none when you don't feel like missioning, fighting, or crafting.  It's a fun downtime activity, but don't spend all your info on leveling it up.  It's not that impressive now, but lets see how SONY envisions the branch when they revamp the ability system...

hope they don't "revamp" it as well as the combat system in SWG.

It is inevitable.

But it took them since launch to "revamp" it in SWG, I'm placing my bets on it taking 3 years here.

1 For accumulative year doing whatever they do during "Concept Stages"

1 Year trying to learn how their game actually works. Titled: "Development Stages"

1 Year working out their bugs and glitches.  Titled: "Testing/In-Live Stages"

Long road ahead...

Data miner is actually very cool, and possibly one fo the matrixy
things in this game. If they would just boost the rewards by a factor
of 15 and cut the actual tapping time down 1/2 it would be more worth
levelling.

Example - Advanced data tap takes 16 seconds to tap a node once

Info gained and lower nodes in Richland - 50

XP """" - 47

Something like 750 info and 650 xp for those easy nodes would be great.
The same sort of level as the mobs, say. Then when you get to Downtown
nodes you'll be getting around 50k xp and 50k info per tap.

The ability to pull code bits out, maybe randomly every three taps you get a bit, would be good too.

Even better would be going back to the old FLOW of info/xp, as I remember it from beta.

I think that those numbers may be a little excessive, RockyB, but basicaly the idea is sound.

As a level 30 character, I can survive in the lower areas of Downtown too. On a mission, I get about $i100k completion fee, and about another $i100k from drops (on average). Given that a mission takes me around 5/6 minutes, that gives $i33k / minute, and I have to FIGHT for it (often using TB's etc.).

I think that Data Miners should be able to pull around 1/3 of the rewards ($info, XP and frags) that you could get on a mission... or Data Miner will be the next Arbalest :smileymad:.

see, i always though the data miner should actually mine data from... data sources.  you know, like computers and cables and such.

locate data node would light up a box on the side of a building (you see them everywhere) you'd walk over, hook your data tap to it, and start downloading.  or in a mission, one of those computers that are everywhere.  walk over, hook up your tap, download away.  i know the matrix is all just code, but i'd like it a lot better if i were hooking into something and not just pulling it out of the air.

As a level 30 can you solo a level 52 mob in creston hideout
though? Now give that same level of difficulty to actually succesfully
tapping a node and you'll see what i mean. There is a good chance of
failing the tap and  tapping out a node, making the actual time
spent longer.

The whole "failed" thing is lame though as you have no direct control over it.  The concept was supposed to entail risk as you were pinching information from the source of the matrix.  I would have like an NPC risk (agents, a exile specific to your activity, something) or a jackout to a hostile nether region or something.

This tree had a lot more potential than the implementation provided.

I am thinking that the Devs clearly had only 3 main 'career choices'
when they started out.  Guns, Martial Arts and Hacking.  You
can not, within the scope of the game, being anything else as you main
trait.  You have to have something to earn your meals.  Proxy
is interesting but is very difficult to make a go of it.  (That
isn't stopping me from trying it on one of my alts...)

Spys and Coders are meant to be support branches.
