My laptop is running very hot at times to the point where I get blue screened and it goes into auto shut down. The underside get extremely hot!! I had it in pieces the other day and its dust free but I’m guessing that it’s just because the air circulation isn’t the best around and underneath it. I have been looking at laptop coolers but have no idea what will be a decent one, I think having one with vents directly underneath the RAM will be a better option as my RAM is probably the hottest part, o so the blue screen keeps telling me I was thinking about this but wondered it anyone else had any suggestions

It's a Dell XPX 1710 and has been overheating alot before I pulled it to bits ( scary when I spent £2k on it ), I thought there may have been a build up of filth inside but it was pretty clean. It's all sealed again properly tho

ok looked your unit up....i was talking about This. i was wondering if you removed the heatsink off teh cpu and put some new thermal paste down..while it shouldnt need it...its a possiblity that the factory 'paste' is crap.
tho..its a Dell..nice machines ..always run hot..i have an older XPS/inspiron 9100 that the vid was upgraded to the 9800...that puppy runs HOT!....but as long as i dont block the bottom vents(flat hard surface)...its never overheated on me..

Na I never had the heat sink off I only removed the cover to check inside.
I dont mind it running hot but when it gets to the point where it shuts off automatically due to excessive heat, id say that theres somethign wrong. I have it propped up on some cd cases on the corner points atm so its not sitting flat on the desk. It did somewhat help but there is no air flow for the RAM on the bottom. All it has are some slits for air to get in/out but no fan to circulate. Its red hot at times hense why it shuts off.

Sounds a bit like my laptop, except mine ended up being sat on top of 4 big text books to try and stop it over heating.
Anyway, Maplin's seem to have a lot of these sorts of things and if I remember rightly PC World stocks one type as well but don't quote me on that. I just took a quick look on Froogle to see what came up. They are supposed to help a lot though.

Kept my last two laptops cold on the bottom, where normally they would toast my flesh. Just a suggestion.
