Hello Tsunetomo,

In addition to phi 's suggestions you may want to uninstall Norton as a test only.

Ok so I tried the heating strategy and no luck. I disabled Norton autoprotect and still had the crash. Brad when you stated to uninstall Norton did you mean totally remove or just disable, just wanted to make sure. Thanks for all the help you guys.

Hello

The down and dirty method would be a full uninstall but you can do this instead;

First disable background programs:

1. Select the START button.

2. Select RUN.

3. Type in "msconfig" (without the "SMILEY

4. Pres OK

5. Select the STARTUP tab.

6. Click on disable all. (If you are using Windows 98 or ME you will need to uncheck every thing but scan registry and systray)

7. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer

 After you restart:

1. Select the Start Button

2. Select Run.

3. Type in services.msc.

4. Press OK

5. In the Services window look for the line Internet Connection Firewall/ Internet Connection Sharing or Windows Internet Connection Firewall/ Internet Connection Sharing; right click and select stop if it is available.

6. Repeat for any references to Norton or Symantecs you see.

Please note, I am not suggesting that you play MXO with your system unprotected rather these steps are offered in order to help troubleshoot.

I was having similar symptoms when I ran my x1800xt slightly underpowered..What kind of power supply do ya have and how many amps does it have on the 12v rail(s)?

This may seem like it is something else due to it only happening when running MxO but MxO puts alot of strain on a system..You may have just enough power to run your system under a light/normal load..But when it hits a full load ie..running MxO at max settings you may not have enough juice for it...

So I have had this problem for awhile now, basically I can load up MxO no problem and even play for awhile (the play time varies from crashing as soon as the game loads to about 45 mins before everything crashes). Nothing in particular causes the crash it will happen as frequently if I am just standing around or in a mission. When the game crashes my computer totally locks up (ctrl-alt-del, mouse, you name it the machine is unresponsive), the screen will usually freeze (every once in awhile it goes black), and the sound from my speakers will either be garbled or be a high pitched tone (like in a hearing test). The only thing that brings my machine back is to hit the reset switch and reboot Windows. I have tried reformatting, turning down settings in game, reinstalling MxO, doing a client check, and doing a full system check nothing seems to work. So hope someone out there has some insight. My system info. is as follows:

Sounds very much like a problem I had recently. I'm not sure if it was a bad harddrive or a bad Motherboard, but the MoBo had some issues with sorting out power (well, or so I figure, it couldn't power up my external HD as any other PC or laptop could), and inevitably fried my harddrive. My lockup problems happened after I replaced my setup with this "newer" motherboard.

So, I buy a new harddrive, and for safe measures, get a new (trusted brand) motherboard that's compatable with my processor, and install the two. My lockup problems went away.

-----

I did try a reformat, and reinstall of Windows before going out and getting the new hardware (Well, this was before my Harddrive fried... quite literally) and it did nothing. If a reformat/reinstallation doesn't work, it's a big hint that something's wrong with the hardware. It could be overheating, as Phi suggested... but I had the same issue with the lockups happening at very random times; tried the fan thing, and it didn't help, as my problem was with a piece of hardware, and not an overheat issue.

Of course, i'm not a Techie expert, i'm only speaking from painful experience. SMILEY

Hello 0rexis ,

Thanks for your input as well.

As far as your last line goes, like they say experience is the best teacher.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I found the problem, it turns out that one of my memory modules was bad. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic and my PC kept locking up at random points in the test. I started removing modules until the tests ran to completion. Then I put modules back in until it started freezing again. Eventually I found the module that was bad. After I took out the bad memory I could run the diagnostic for hours on end with no problems. Then I logged in to MxO and played for 5 hours crash free.  Well, thanks again for the input. See you all in the Matrix.
