It used to happen at one of the contacts, Beryl I think.  I'm pretty sure they fixed it though.

I honestly don't see the point in coding abilities simply to sell them to vendors. Even if the vendors don't take into account any coding cost discounts you may have and thus buy it based only on the base cost, you'll still only going to make a very small amount of profit. You'd be better off data mining for roughly the same amount of info!

IIRC, level 50 abilities default to 700K or higher on the marketplace.  That's the price I'm expecting vendors to pay during this temporary buy-back period.  I guess we'll have to try it and see.
Community General Discussion Buy-back exploit? Re: Buy-back exploit? Super_Jenius 0 04/14/2006 10:02
I was wrong.  Level 50 abils sell for 1.25 mil each, not 700K.  Need I say more?

Yes: $1,250,000.  It costs about $93,000 to make.  I had three subs in my inventory, so I just made about $3.5 mil in a couple of minutes.  Now, I have to go farm for more, so it's hard to say if this is an exploit, especially since the buy-back is temporary.  I salivate over the $info I can earn doing this, but I don't want to get banned.
Community General Discussion Buy-back exploit? Re: Buy-back exploit? Super_Jenius 0 04/14/2006 11:38

That's the question: Is this side-effect intended or even allowed?  Given that the cost of upgrading new abilities is quite high, the devs may have had this in mind, or at least let it pass, but I can't speak for them.

Buy-back of any ability: Intentional
Increased frag drop for creating abilities: Intentional
Using these to earn $info for upgrading abilities: Unknown

I hope Brewko isn't the first one to answer. :smileysurprised:

Back when HCFrog was working on org. abilities, they talked about adding 20 or so slots to make room for them.  I don't know, maybe they did that already?  In any case, it is possible and probably not that hard to do.  It would be nice if the devs would just double the slots, but it could have negative effects on database size and bandwidth.
Community General Discussion I heard me' a lil' rumor regarding the Storyline . . . Re:I heard me' a lil' rumor regarding the Storyline . . . Super_Jenius 0 12/29/2006 21:22
Sure, there are parts of the story I think could have been told differently.  The "cheat codes" video game terminology actually bothered me more than the "laser pew pew".  Ultimately, I don't want to tell the story, I want to experience it.  Personally, I have lost interest in this part of the storyline, and that's the worst thing that can happen to a story.  I can see what Chadwick was trying to do with Anome, creating a villain people could sympathize with, like Cypher, but I just didn't connect.  Maybe it was because the story progressed too slowly (8 months was WAY too long for this thread), or because I was never on at the right time to meet the guy for Live Events, or because CloudWolf needs to explain the story to me (get to work m8 SMILEY ).  In any case, by the time chapter 5.3 rolled around, I stopped jacking in to find out what happens next.  I'm hoping 6.3 or 7.1 pulls me back in.

A lost opportunity.

An interesting thought.  During the Double Cross event, we learned that the the red-eyed agents continued to search for "potential Carriers", and they made their main base at Kalt Chemicals.  Were they searching for cheat codes?  Didn't Kalt create the codes?  Please catch me up if this conclusion has already been reached.

Unless I'm mistaken, the false Agents' goal was to take out those who carried the killcode Neurophyte found, which was programmed to destroy them.

And did Kalt actually create the vials?  They were Agent powers from an earlier version of the Matrix (in this live event, the Oracle says that this was before they brought her to the Matrix, so this most likely happened in a test Matrix).  They were sealed away in Kalt Chemicals because they were too overt and caused mass rejections of reality, and as I recall, that version had to be shut down due to this.   Seems to me that Kalt didn't create them, they were just placed there.  Unless Kalt is the Program that created them in the first place.

Edit: Ah, I re-read the critical mission transcripts.  Kalt did create them.

Searching for Neurophyte's killcode does make sense, especially in the context of the event, except that Neurophyte was alive on my server (maybe that's why I never saw them).  Plus, it appears the fake agents were kicked out of the Kalt towers by the players.  I'm a little rusty on the story, but one of the Sentinels said they are controlled by the General.  Do they serve a further purpose in the storyline, or does the General just pull them out anytime he's searching for code?

Apart from the Sentinel, some blogs and maybe the one or other mission text (like Caboclo messages or Cryptos' propaganda), you don't see anything pure from Chadwick in the game, only Chadwick material worked up by developers.
The LET has come up with lots of stories during Monolith (I think only for live events, thougth) - of which most aren't concluded because they left and didn't share their plans for some reason. As far as I know, it's pretty pointless to blame the Neurophyte gap on Chadwick.

So please explain me (when you like, of course), how exactly you can judge about Chad's writing abilities from the storyline you see written and played by mission designers.
If anything, look up MxO Resource - the Sentinels there are at your mercy. They're written by Chadwick purely.

Edit: Oh, looks like I've forgotten the cinematics. But still...

I would have preferred to stick with the main storyline from Chadwick.  It was confusing to have all these new characters and storylines that had little or nothing to do with the main plot, and it's unfortunate that they didn't leave notes on these.  At the same time, I think it is apparent that the LET was covering for the fact that the game was not ready for release.  While the devs were struggling to fix bugs, keep the servers running, and get out the next chapter of criticals, the LET stayed on schedule for the most part and gave us something to do.

As far as Chadwick, I don't care much for the new cinematics, but I think the Sentinels are jenius SMILEY.  Overall, I got no problems with the guy.

It could aswell mean that she simply has more codes or vials in storage apart from those in the case.

This definitely isn't answered in any Sentinel or mission?

Othinn's quote was the one I was referring to, which means Kalt can either make them or otherwise has access to them.  As you said, the latter would be more consistent with the Oracle said.

Unless the subscriber base really picks up, I don't expect this game to last much longer than the day that either Rarebit or Walrus move on to other things. I don't see SOE being bothered to hire new staff to replace any old ones that leave. And I expect that to be even more so once the DC games reaches a playable beta phase.

I think Chuui is probably right here.  While new blood might be good for the game, it's just as likely to screw things up.  If both Rarebit and Walrus move on, then I think that's a clue SOE is looking to close shop.  A more likely scenario is that Walrus will get promoted and Rarebit will take his place, but who knows.

As far as resources, it is what it is.  SOE isn't going to invest more in the game, and subscribers aren't going to pick up dramatically.  My hope is that the few resources will be focused toward end-game/replayable content and stories that interest dedicated players.

The thing is, I am and have been part of other communities outside the "mainstream".  We just don't let go.  Sure, we hope for more, share our frustrations, fight & argue, kick & scream, but most importantly -- we pay.  Those are all signs of a community that is alive and that cares about the product.  The real danger came when WB sold the game.  If SOE didn't buy it, WB probably would have shut it down, but now we are past that.  Now the game just has to pay the bills.  Based on the resources SOE puts into it, I'd guess that is somewhere around the 5,000 subscriber ($900K/year) mark, but that's just a guess.  In any case, the game doesn't need 7 million to stay alive, and it could sustain itself for a long time.

I found this thread on DN1.  They are certainly open about criticisms.

Morpheus: "I have dreamed a dream, and now that dream has gone from me."

Monolith/WB definitely had big and exciting plans for this game, but for various reasons, that plan failed.  If I had to point a finger, I'd point it at the WBIE execs for not being patient, but I'm sure there's plenty of blame to go around.

I don't disagree with the OP on most things.  I will say play the game for what it is, not what it was or what it could have been.

As far as being something initiated by player population goes, I think that's probably the case... My own (relatively technically ignorant) theory is that it has something to do with the fact that that area is the most resource-intensive in the game, due to the plethora of gigantic skyscrapers--that Kalt super-scraper in Park East, for instance, which is in The Lag Zone, is many times more massive, in terms of file size, than any other city block. Supposedly our servers have plenty of spare RAM for the load they're handling, but still, I don't think the resource-intensive nature of the problem area is likely to just be coincidence. I think something in the load-handling algorithm is getting overloaded or out of whack due to dealing with resource sizes that exceed its valid parameters, or something.

That's probably all wrong, but it makes me feel smart to assume that I'm right. =P Can't really test that, though, 'cause removing (and in theory later replacing) some of those skyscrapers would make for some nasty big patches, not to mention breaking the PB arcs and so forth.

Maybe so.  Ironically, Downtown used to be the most lag-free area in the game, at least on my machine.  That's why I used to love hanging out there.  Then one day, the lag started.  I did a search, and the earliest message I could find about the lag was on 8/20/2005.  Considering the content of the message and the fact that forums were reset on 8/15/2005, the lag must have started even earlier.  Note that this was BEFORE Pandora's Box was released on 8/31/2005, so the timing points more towards problems with the server merge.  I hope that info helps a little.

In any case, I understand where Walrus is coming from, but I think this falls in the super-high-priority-do-whatever-it-takes-to-get-it-fixed category.  I mean, this is a online game where people pay to, among other things, keep the servers running, and you just can't have lag like that in the premium area of the game.  You just can't.

Do you guys have a guess of what the lag is?
*Tries to remember what Dracomet said...* It's the regionserver that controls that square section of the district trying to spawn a child server to handle what it thinks is a load problem, but it can't create the child server for some reason--it seems to be getting invalid coordinates. So it keeps trying to split over and over, which causes it to eat up all the CPU on that machine, so anything else, like messages about player/NPC actions, etc, can only be handled in a delayed, ie laggy, fashion.

Or that's one of the apparent manifestations, anyway--if I recall correctly. There may be some other real root issue behind it, but the servers currently don't report enough information to tell us why the bogus coordinates are coming up in the first place, and we can't find a way to reproduce the child spawning death spiral on our test servers. There's probably something in particular that kicks it off, but we haven't found what that is yet. It seems to be related to volume of player activity, because the cycle of lag starts up most frequently on more populous servers, even though our servers should be able to handle our normal daily player population just fine.

I don't know what your configuration capabilities are, but as a workaround, maybe you can load a fixed number of processes at boot time and turn off child spawning altogether.  It's not like you have to worry about a population explosion, so you should be able to anticipate how many processes are required.  Sure, there will be times when the population is high in downtown, but even then, I bet the lag won't be as bad as it is now.  Just a thought.

I've been critical of the new cinematic style.  While I would still prefer full color, this is a definite improvement.  The artwork is more detailed, the animation feels more "cinematic" than the others, and hey, that chick looks hot SMILEY.  The voice-over is good, but a more distinct personality would've been better.  It doesn't give off that cool, cyberpunk vibe you get from characters in the movies.  Overall, good job, devs.
