The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion R.I.P Paul Newman. 1925-2008. R.I.P Paul Newman. 1925-2008. Cerlaine 0 09/27/2008 15:35
  Following is taken from IMDB.

Beloved actor and humanitarian Paul Newman has died of cancer in his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Newman, whose stunning blue eyes and immense capacity for generosity made him one of the most cherished personalities of his era, was an extremely private man and was rumored to have been seriously ill for several months. He had canceled some planned appearances in the summer.

Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1925, Newman first made his mark on the stage and TV but his startling good looks and undeniable presence destined him to appear on the screen. Newman often played troubled characters with streaks of nobility such as "Fast" Eddie Felson in The Hustler, and the eponymous, irrepressible roles of Hud Bannon in Hud and the imprisoned rebel, Cool Hand Luke.

But it was his role as Butch in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, opposite Robert Redford, that thrust him into the realm of super-stardom. He followed it with other classic films including The Sting, The Towering Inferno, Slap Shot, and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

Newman was a star right out of the gate, however, being nominated for an Oscar for his third major role as Brick Pollitt, the drunken husband locked in a loveless marriage with Elizabeth Taylor's smoldering "Maggie the Cat" in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Newman's real-life relationship was exactly the opposite. He was married to actress Joanne Woodward for 50 years. The two worked together in 1958's The Long Hot Summer. It was the same year they were wed and that Woodward won an Oscar for her work in 1957's The Three Faces of Eve.

It was not the end of their professional collaborations. Newman also directed her to another Oscar nomination in Rachel, Rachel (the film picked up four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay by their lifelong friend, Stewart Stern). Newman also directed Woodward in The Glass Managerie and starred with her in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge.

Nominated for seven Oscars (including Best Actor nods for Absence of Malice and The Verdict) Newman finally won on his eighth nomination for his reprisal role of Fast Eddie in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money (he would be nominated two more times afterwards, for Best Actor in Nobody's Fool and Best Supporting Actor in Road to Perdition).

But of all the trophies Newman won or was awarded in his life none seem more appropriate than his honorary 1994 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Newman's charitable giving, from his Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, a camp for seriously ill children or his proceeds from Newman's Own, are legendary. As was the man. As will be his legacy.

Newman is survived by Woodward, his five daughters and several grandchildren. A son, Scott Newman, died of an accidental drug overdose in 1978.

Personally this is a sad loss to the acting world and an even bigger loss to the charities that he worked with. Every decade he made movies in inspired new generations and entertained many film goers alike with The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and more recently his last live action role in Road to Perdition.

Rest in peace.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Friday the 13th Re:Friday the 13th Cerlaine 0 12/05/2008 09:55

I think both the Teaser and Trailer look both pretty decent I liked the fact that they plan on having Jason wear his 'hood' (Glimpse seen in the Trailer just before the '6' appears unless i'm seeing things) that he wore in 'Friday the 13th part 2' before he got his iconic hockey mask in the following sequel and the fact that he has a bit of speed about him in the early sequels.

However remakes these days just flat out suck considering last years 'Halloween' remake/reboot but it's always best to keep an open mind. Must say I would have preferred a sequel to the original series wouldn't have hurt much as many fans would have liked to see the Tommy Jarvis protagonist go head to head again or maybe another Freddy vs. Jason flick but hey with the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series getting a remake/reboot too we might see another flick like that in the future .

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Friday the 13th Re:Friday the 13th Cerlaine 0 12/05/2008 10:17

Thats one thing I always liked about any horror movie villian but when you break it down a horror movie wouldn't be the same these days without teenagers running from a walking villian, falling over then two seconds later the villian would standing over them waiting to get the kill shot. One of many horror cliches that is loved by everyone .

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Friday the 13th Re:Friday the 13th Cerlaine 0 12/08/2008 16:13

Seems he will don the infamous 'bag head' for some of the movie. I hope that leads to a somewhat iconic moment when we see him in his hockey mask for the first time which would be at the end of the 2nd act likely.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Top ten crappy movies that should have been cool Re:Top ten crappy movies that should have been cool Cerlaine 0 12/09/2008 07:43

Haha! This thread should generate a few replies.

If by you mean movies that should have been cool after months of good hype then there is a few famous contenders on my list. Examples being:

Hulk: Trailer led us to believe this movie had a different kind of pace and feel to it but in my opinion ended up being rushed CGI and a lame final act that showed the awful CGI that this movie had. (Note: Enjoyed the reboot/remake earlier this year being a fan of Norton since his debut film 'Primal Fear'SMILEY

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines: If you ask which movie I had generally been waiting all my days to see the all out Man vs. Machine conclusion after it's awesome predecessor this wins hands down. This movie should have been made late 90's with the original director and Arnold when he still actually had some box office number to his name. Also the sequel will not be 'Justice' either. As good as Christian Bale is this movie will be overshadowed by a hack director and no James Cameron attached. Should leave well alone.

Spider-man 3: Yeah. Me jumping on the hater bandwagon with this one but the haters ARE correct. Poorly executed storyline of Peter Parkers 'Dark Side'. As good an actor as Tobey McGuire is at times (Still think he is good for the overall role) he cannot potray a 'Dark Peter' to save himself. The so called 'Team Up' of former best pals at the finale just didn't convince at all.

Die Hard 4.0/Live Free or Die Hard: Love/Hate relationship with this one. One view is that Willis does look like he has a few punches left in him but it just wasn't McClane in the theatrical PG-13 release. Once a view of the R-Rated release and John McClane dropping some F-bombs and his signature line had it feeling like a Die Hard movie although missing some decent support cast.

Halloween (2007): This one is the all time on the hit list for me. Being a fan of the original and it being the all time 'Original' slasher movie you would think they would have done it justice using a fresh cast and an updated setting... well a fresh cast yes.. But the feel of 1970's friendly feel was missing here amongst other things. Malcolm McDowall is a good actor but Dr. Loomis here lacks the determination to keep Michael locked up like his 1970's counterpart. As for Michael himself since when did a Bart Simpson wannabe kid locked up for 20 odd years making masks EVER gain the build of someone who looks as though he could tangle with the best in a WWE ring? The original Myers was tall but medium normal build but many can argue the 'Evil' always helps Michael do the impossible of things but Rob Zombie clearly states that he is nothing more than your average nutjob from a poor, foul mouthed family. Didn't work AT all.

Thats five from me I guess and I know most of them are remakes/reboots/adaptations/sequels but all in all should have been better.

I urge people to come up with their 'letdown' movies this can be quite fun to see who replies

Trailer

Technically the trailer is on the Myspace page but I figure this website would lag a lot less.

Good to see some Marvel alumni make it into the storyline after not making the cut for X3. Gambit and Emma Frost scenes got big raves at this years Comic-Con and it looks from the trailer that they are actually getting justice done after being left out of the other movies

I'm inclined to agree.  X3 destroyed the little excitement I had about the X-universe in Hollywood.  However, this trailer gives me a little hope.  It's a shame they didn't get the same Sabretooth from the previous films, but Liev might can pull it off just the same I think.

I wouldnt say it totally destroyed the excitement of any future X-Men films I enjoyed X3 but think it was a lame way to end a trilogy. Every fan was hoping for Gambit in that movie though as when it was first in production Gambit was spose to have a cameo near the end with Benicio Del Toro going to play him and if memory serves correctly when Bryan Singer was still attached to direct he had planned to use Emma Frost in Jean Greys place with Sigourney Weaver to play Frost.

In my mind that could have been a better X3

EDIT:

I forgot they used Sabretooth in X1 lol he looks a bit different in the trailer but still looks good all the same.

Santa Clause: The Movie

A very old not well known movie staring Dudley Moore i think that we used to watch as kids. Still good to this day.

While not an xmas movie this creeps up on any channel station during this time of year. Good for the kids who havent seen as well as adults

One movie that has eluded my viewing all these years is 'It's a Wonderful Life'.

Last house on the left trailer

A bit off-topic and generally nothing to do with Friday the 13th but the above trailer is a remake (much like Friday the 13th) of a underrated Wes Craven flick from the late 70's just before 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' made him big.

On topic note: The movie is only a month away from release I must say i'm looking forward to it.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion The Dark Knight *spoilers* Thread Re:The Dark Knight *spoilers* Thread Cerlaine 0 01/20/2009 02:22

It's implied that the Ra's Al Ghul has had unlimited succesors to the name over the years so maybe a new face/actor can be cast in that role to head the League of Shadows onto Gotham again giving Batman some new fight seeing as he, Gordon and Dent put away nearly the entire mob away in The Dark Knight. Talia Al Ghul (Ra's daughter) could serve as a fitting love interest for Bruce Wayne along the lines of hiding her true identity or something like that.

I think the Riddler or Catwoman is the way to go in the sequel maybe giving the Riddler a new twist but Eddie Murphy in the role? Not a chance maybe Edward Norton (Sure he was the hulk etc but he's the right frame/build for someone like Riddler and can hold a role like it.) or someone along that calibre. For Catwoman I can't think of anyone other than Angelina at the minute... maybe Scarlett Johansson?

It most certinly is not! Ra's Al Ghul is one man, in the comics he is hundreds of years old, in the movie they leave that open to debate but imply the he isn't with the screne at the mansion with the lines...

Bruce: "Ra's Al Ghul is dead, I watched him die."

Ducard/Ra's: "But is Ra's Al Ghul immortal, or are his methods supernatural?"

Bruce: "Or cheap parlor tricks to conceal his true Identity, Ra's"

Ducard/Ra's: "Surely a man who spends his night scrambling across rooftops wouldnt begrudge me for duel identies."

They mention that the League of shadows is hundreds of years old, and give Ra's a secret identity to give him a kind of artifical immortality and as to replace the ultra unrealistic "Lazerus Pits"

I apologise. The way I have read on the boards of imdb etc (and inteperated myself is) that Ra's Al Ghul was just a name for hundreds of years fulfilled by 'mortal' men such as Ducard and when they died or are no longer able to keep the title they pass it on to someone more worthy (Successor etc). I'm well aware of the comic version of Ra's and the Lazarus Pits scenario but we both know that the writers are staying well clear of anything 'supernatural' about the rebooted movies series.

I might have left something out i'll come back to it in a bit when i'm in a right frame of mind and not frustrated by this lag

Nominations announced

Generally most of this years best are on there and rightfully so. So who is your money on to walk away with the most deserved award in movie history?

Best Actor: Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) havent seen the movie yet but considering the bits I have seen i'm sure Rourke will walk away with the big one.

Best Actress: Kate Winslet (The Reader) 5th time nominated will surely walk away this time.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) 'Nuff said. Anyone who has seen TDK will know it's a sure fire.

Best Supporting Actress: Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) Again I havent seen the movie but she has got rave reviews so I guess thats my pick.

Best Director: Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire).

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire.

Lets hear yours!

The Dark Knight could lose every other Oscar (although it will pick up sound, editing or w/e) but if Heath gets the best supporting actor I would easily switch off the rest of the Oscars happy knowing at least a bit of recognition is due not just for the Joker but the guy did his fair share of good films.

The Academy more often than not snubs Blockbusters for Art House films. I can't really say why, but I can hazard a guess to them being pretentious snots who want to flex their culture muscle to the world on Oscar night. Whether or not Christopher Nolan deserved to be in the Best Direction category is debatable, but to not include arguably the most popular movie of the year is just plain ignorant. The further controversy over Hans Zimmer/James Newton Howard's stunning score  for the movie being left out the running is just further proof.

Ledger best sweep Best Supporting Actor or, as far as movie awards go, an injustice will have been done.

As for my actual predictions? I see Bejamin Button sweeping the board. I called that when I saw the trailer.

I just agreed with every word said there PBlade /dap.

Except the Benjamin Button movie I have yet to see a preview or even get a quick 10 word description of what the movie is about haha.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion 2009 Oscars. Re:Re:Re:2009 Oscars. Cerlaine 0 01/23/2009 16:23

Denzel for Training Day comes to mind; or Scorcese for the Departed also comes to mind).

Exactly my thoughts on both awards but to be honest even though I didn't highly rate The Departed first time around (Second viewing I enjoyed much better as I payed attention to the twists etc) I was rooting for Scorcese all the way due to the two decades of brilliance he brought to the screeen (Goodfellas is standing the test of time for like another ten years). And Denzel for Training Day? Didn't like it that much but Denzel with the countless awesome movies he had starred in (Man on Fire easily being my favourite and a VERY underrated film) didn't quite deserve the Oscar for that. Shouldn't have went to Russel Crowe for A Beautiful Mind? Never saw it but he was all the hype before he started throwing telephones all around the joint.

EDIT: Whilst mentioning Man on Fire and underrated actors would someone please quote me on the injustice or Christopher Walken not getting his dues paid to him? Surely he's mainly known as a villian in some films but the part he plays in Man on Fire can easily transition to another film with an equal part and booming script and earn a nomination or two. Anyone agree?

Hmm. The link still works for me but it will disappear soon cos Imdb refreshes it's news thingy. General buzz going about is that Warner is interested in hiring the Wachowskis to direct a trilogy of Superman movies. Personally I think this will be the proper 'reboot' like Batman Begins cos Superman Returns wasnt a 'reboot' imo it was a loose sequel. A three part trilogy could work well in terms of retelling the origins of Kal El, Life in Smallville etc and gives a chance for filmakers to bring back Zod along with introducing villians like Doomsday (Would make an epic second film cliffhanger).
