News and Announcements Broadcast Depth Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008 -Collbard- 0 02/07/2008 09:41

A lot of people are complaining about, "oh it's only for datamining and pvp?  lame."  But keep in mind that the image retrieval  says:

"Phase 1
 Population: 0
 Interior Access: Restricted
 Mining Yield: *10"

This leads me to believe that there will be future phases with more things to do in this area.  Rather than wait to add all sorts of things into it, he is probably letting us test the area with pvp and datamining, in case there are any bugs that he has missed.  I believe in a previous post he mentioned that there were bluepills inside the buildings and he would have to take them apart to remove the bluepills for the next patch (which is why interior access would currently be restricted).  Really, would he have made this large and detailed of an area just for datamining and pvp?  I think we can expect a lot more from this area (at least I hope so) in future updates.  Who makes a Phase 1 without a Phase 2?

Phase 1?  More phases?!  Schweet!  So it looks like FFA PVP and Extreme Data Mining.  Hopefully there are more additions, but for now thats cool enough.  *Goes off to check up on Data Mining abilities*

Hmm, this is going to be interesting for sure.  When I first glanced at the picture I was like, "*CENSORED* hyper jumping backwards?!  That's not even useful!"  But then I realized the concrete/metal bridge thing and remembered the fact that you can already jump backwards off of buildings.  Maybe we are only seeing half of the picture, and she actually got kicked off of the bridge...knocking people off of high areas ftw...thats most likely not what this is about so I'm going to stop mindlessly typing.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Which areas am I still restricted in? Which areas am I still restricted in? -Collbard- 0 12/23/2007 13:16

I ask myself this often.  There is really no need to have ot pull out a pen and paper, and run through an entire district to find the answer.  I think that either the atlas should display which neighborhoods are still restriced, or a slash command like /restricted should give a list of areas that you are still restricted in. The slash command would likely be easiest to implement, but I think it would be nice to add some more functionality to the atlas.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Syntax & Recursion Merge Re:Syntax & Recursion Merge -Collbard- 0 12/23/2007 13:27
Well I've played on and off since release and I've never been really involved in a LE- I guess I just never really knew the right people.  Anyway, a server merge would allow much more of a chance for everyone to participate in LE's.  I don't think this would exactly be seen as a sign of weakness.  I also don't think it's goign to happen though.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Give us constructs!!!!!!!!! Re:Give us constructs!!!!!!!!! -Collbard- 0 12/27/2007 19:23

Really, because of the game engine, faction constructs will likely not appear, and if they did, they would be little more than instanced mission areas that a group can meet and not be worried about Agent attacks.  That wouldn't be so bad, but it also wouldn't be so useful, you can just as easily meet in the matrix.  We do already have Org constructs. /shrug

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Character Names Re:Character Names -Collbard- 0 12/31/2007 16:30

Allright, I'm going to throw in my 2 cents.

First of all, in MXO our characters are more than just toons with names.  They are "characters" that play into the storyline of The Matrix...I think Anome's character has been inactive for a while, but I don't think that a new player should name his self Anome.  While this is an extreme case, the same can be said for other characters.  I'd cry a bit if I saw a new player named TasteeWheet or Skyscream.  To allow new players to take old player's names is to completely ignore the the canonic (word?) nature of MXO.

Of course, as we have seen, this creates clear problems; any created character is technically part of canon, including low level characters that were created and are now ignored.  Completely ignoring the technical issues of character names, my solution would be that in order for a character name to remain tied to a certain character, that character must reach X level, have X ammount of play time, and complete X objective.  Once these are done, unless that character is deleted, a character name should not be accessible to players.

Alternatively, if a wipe was neccessary (which maybe it is) an email could be sent to every account owner (of course, I don't trust that, but something of the sort could be done) informing them that unless their account is re-activated, all the characters will lose their names/be deleted.

Basically, I don't think names should be easilly reasigned.  Maybe I'm biased, being a returning vet and all.  However, if after 6 months my character's name was gone, I wouldn't have resubbed- while I've had friends who have had trouble creating names, but they always found a name in the end and played.

My own opinion aside, you shouldn't plan things dependant on how the population seems at any point in time.  We have to be ready for it to expand.

As optimistic as that is, I think the game itself was designed to support mission areas for enough people so that implementation of this sort of item would in no way hurt anything.  Wyou consider how many of these would actually be used at a given moment for RP purposes, I don't think they would bother anyone.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Question about Mid-level Content Question about Mid-level Content -Collbard- 0 01/12/2008 11:48

The Development Roundtable forum is where players can ask questions about ongoing development and post their own ideas for the game.

So instead of posting my ideas about content, I'd like to ask what sort of Mid-level content is currently being developed?  That is, content focused on players levels 15-40.  The begining of the game is fun: running the tutorial, using the newbie helper collectors, running the first critical missions, choosing an organisation, tagging hardlines, exploring, meeting people/joining a crew, finding mission contacts.  Once the player completes these initial objectives, the grind to the end begins.

I realize that there are archive missions, access nodes, more mission contacts, more collectors, and weekly critical missions, but these often become repetitive.  I also find that Archive missions and constructs are a bit hidden to new players.  Personally I think more content along the lines of Pandora's Box should be implemented (although maybe involve the constructs in this)

So we know that Rarebit has been working on more "quests" which I find are often very fun, but how far in development are they?  What else is being worked on?

Development Discussion Development Roundtable multiple factions chat Re:multiple factions chat -Collbard- 0 01/13/2008 21:07
this is slightly unrelated, but how many people fit on a crew?  Is it 12?  you need two crews in order to form a faction which = 24 people if both crews are full.  I just think that crews should actually be used more often in a way other than a tool to joining a faction.  So for a tri-org faction as you called it, just make 3 crews, divide your members, and form a faction under 1 flag.  I just think better things could be worked on than a chat system.

I agree with ThePigeonKing.  Once this whole intruder business is straightened out and things return back to a relitively normal routine, I think that a chapter or two could be devoted to learning more about Programs/Exiles.  It would also put the focus on Merv, who is often sort of ignored by the other orgs imo.

This recap doesn't do it justice.  We were in Datamine for a very long time, defending the Technician.  Once the Agent appeared it was all downhill.  Several operatives sacrificed themselves by fighting the agent while The Technician ran.  I wasn't there for the end, but they say and it appears that ChloeAnn was fighting the Technician while an Agent shot him.  It was an interesting night, but for very small results.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Importance of /bugging small interlock bugs Importance of /bugging small interlock bugs -Collbard- 0 01/30/2008 17:15

there are several bugs involved with interlock that are extremely common, yet haven't been fixed.  A few: guns (espcially rifles it appears) dissapearing sometimes, opponents facing wrong directions, ability icons not appearing to be queud, problems with doors and walls.  I can't really think of a great list right now.  The thing is, most of these problems are visual issues and don't really affect how combat works; with that in mind, how important to the devs is it that we /bug all of these small issues?  They are definately annoying, though not overly painful.  Just curious.  (I'm really tired right now so if this doesn't make much sense, ignore it)

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Independant Organization Re:Independant Organization -Collbard- 0 01/31/2008 07:23
I understand the idea from a PvP standpoint, but as far as the storyline goes, that doesn't make a whole lot of since to me.  First of all, an independant is going to get in the way of all the other orgs, and most people are going to want to kill you.  Allright, so you think you are cool enough to handle that?  Well no org is going to want a neutral person to participate in their org meetings, so LE's are out.  No critical missions...Basically, thats it.  Interesting idea for PVP, not so much for storyline (unless you don't mind not receivng crits and LE's.  Of course, the neutral players could just do their own events).

Thats not necessaryily true.  What about factions that want to work with / across multiple orgs.  From an RP point of view it can be quite an interesting place to be.  Now the idea about carrying a Neut tag doesnt illiminate you from working with orgs.. just youre beliefs may be slightly different from one org.. if you get what i mean.  So it would be possible to create alliances on all sides.

As far as missions etc go, you could use Rep points to gain access to one org.  The downfall here would be that if one player had mach rep they would have machine missions whereas another player could have zion rep.

My issue is that it is almost impossible to work with more than one org if you take the official sotryline officially.  Zion and the Machines are at War.  That's kill on sight all out War.  Would the machines want to work with someone who is on the opposing side? Not unless they were going to use said person as a spy- same can be said the other way around.  Obviousely most redpills do not see exactly eye-to-eye on every org issue, which is why we have crews and factions.
