  Final Update: January 12, 2008

Hi, everyone.  This is the end of the line for me. Click the link below for more info ...

  • Everything that has a Beginning...
  • Finished Chapter 8.3 to round out the site.
  • Placed a link to RMC:Terminal's Buddy Key Request thread on the main page.
  • MxOResource.com is down. SMILEY I fixed a few broken links, but several remain. I understand a new site is under development, so maybe some of that content will return.
  • Updated the Game Developments page
  • Updated the Neighborhood Contacts page with Sugaree's reviews of Synn and Mercury (Reloaded).

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Bring Back INGAME Cinematics Re:Bring Back INGAME Cinematics Super_Jenius 0 11/10/2006 15:30
I definitely prefer the cinematics using the game engine, but I can see how they would take a lot of resources.  My problem with the animated storyboards is that they are too cheap.  Some of the details are hard to make out, and I usually have to watch it several times to figure out what I'm looking at.  I think we should at least get full color, but higher detail and more animation would be nice as well, something closer to the AniMatrix.  Yes, that would be a little more expensive than the storyboards, but still much cheaper than using the game engine.  If the game is to continue progressing the story through cinematics and critical missions, then I think a certain level of quality is required, and the current storyboards don't cut it.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Live Event Archive Live Event Archive Super_Jenius 0 01/08/2007 10:42
I think the critical mission archive was a really good idea and allows new players to experience the story.  However, the missions don't give you the whole picture.  Live Events were an integral part of the story, especially in the early days.  When I think about all the cool stuff that happened, it's a shame that new players can't experience that, or that old players can't do it again.  Also, a way to archive Live Events might give the devs more incentive to have them more often.  Now, before you call this unfeasible and close the page, hear me out.  First of all, I'm only talking about four major events that, in my opinion, were an important part of the Chadwick storyline:

  • The Race to Find the One
  • The Hunt for Morpheus
  • Death of the Destroyer
  • A Piece of Blue Sky

The question is, how do you archive a live event?  I guess you could do something like world spawns or constructs, but I think the best answer is: Pandora's Box. Think about it.  A lot of what we need is already in place.  Minimal coding (Dracomet) work would be required, meaning it's low risk and Rarebit could do most of the work (great huh, bud?).  Here's how I see it working with The Race to Find the One:

  • You pick up an initial mission from the Archive Vendor.  Maybe it requires a Mission 1.1 token, but be sure to give it back so players can move on Chapter 1.2 if they want.
  • Your controller tells you to meet someone in the mission area.  The contact says something like: "Red-eyed agents have been attacking our operatives around the city.  We need to find out more about them.  They are using PDA's to search for something, but we not sure what they're after.  Bring me a dozen of those PDA's and we'll do some more research.  We've developed a device to aid you.  It emits a carrier signal to the PDA's and should draw the agents to your location.  You may get more agents than you bargained for, so bring some backup."
  • You guessed it.  The "device" is Pandora's Box with a different name. Opening the box spawns the agents that drop PDA's.  You should be able to do this at any level, so you should be able to open the box in any part of the city and the spawns should scale to player level.  Like Pandora's Box, I do think they should require a group of players and be very difficult to complete solo.
  • Turning in the PDA's yields you another box with agents that drop Neo's RSI frags.  All you item collectors can finally get the frags you are missing.
  • Turning in a complete set of frags gets you a meeting with Morpheus, where he gives you his speech and shows you Neo's RSI.
  • Next mission sends you to The Mentor (Morpheus), The Creator (The Architect), and The Seductress (Persephone) to hear about their mysterious dreams. You can't very well solve this puzzle in the archive, so maybe the operator can do it, explaining it without too much detail.  This leads to a meeting with the Oracle, where she tells you about the Shapers.
  • You could do a standard escort mission here, where you fight off operatives from the other orgs.  It might be more fun to hide the Shapers as collectors around the city, maybe in the same areas as the live event, each one giving a clue as to the next location.  After finding them, you meet with the Oracle, where she informs you that the "intruders" got one of the Shapers.
  • Your operator uploads the final box, which spawns two waves of N30 Agents, followed by a few "Super Lightning Agents".  Maybe they drop the second batch of Neo's frags?  I forget how it actually happened.  In any case, completing the box gets you another meeting with the Oracle where she gives you her final message.
  • Of course, rewards would be in order for each box you complete.

I may break down the other events later, but you get the general idea.  Comments?

Development Discussion Development Roundtable programming api to send in-game emails from an out-game source Re:programming api to send in-game emails from an out-game source Super_Jenius 0 01/08/2007 11:13
FWIW, I think you can paste text into an email from outside the game, and you can also send to multiple recipients.  I usually send myself a copy of a mass email, so I can forward it again later if I want.  Not as good as an API, I know, but maybe useful.

I do not therefore believe a full server merge is beyond the technical abilities of the network set up, nor do I think the resulting population is the limiting factor in terms of lag (since we get that in certain deserted area's as routine).

Hmmm... did one of the devs say that?  I always figured there was at least one machine per instance, with maybe more per "region server".  They may share the same box, but I would consider each motherboard/CPU a separate machine.  In any case, I'm not against a merge, but I'd prefer to stick with three servers.  If the QA server is any indication (we sure could use that for the downtown lag problem about now), SOE would just send any leftover hardware to another game, and that would just *CENSORED* me off.  I'm territorial with that stuff. Of course, time constraints are always an issue.  But the guy does get to spend some time on new developments, as evidenced by the recent holiday events.  This is just a suggestion on how to spend that time.  Yes, it would be quite a bit of work, but not overly burdensome, IMO.

Agreed on the story.  I think they purposely kept it a side story to the main plot, and the concert locations make this one the hardest to fit into the Pandora's Box scheme.  Still, it might be fun to collect event items and fight sleepwalkers/security guards, and at least it fits in with the rest of the story.

In order of what I like best:

Alias - Goodbye Sydney! :smileysad:  It's been a great run, and I'm glad the loose ends will get tied up.
LOST - What can I say.  I love J.J. :smileyhappy:
24 - Stressful, but addictive.
Invasion - Getting cancelled? :smileysad:
American Idol - Although, I probably won't watch anymore after Chris left.  He was definitely "The One".

Those are my must see.  I watch a bunch of other shows like House and Grey's Anatomy (reminds me of when E.R. was good).  One good thing about the end of the season is all the time I get back.  With all the cancellations of new shows, I don't know if I'll trust the networks next year.  With that mentality, it's no wonder WB didn't want to stick it out with MxO.  I'm glad SOE picked up the ball.

Edit: I totally forgot Las Vegas!  Once you've been there, it's fun to watch, built-in commecialism and all. :smileyhappy:

Gameplay Discussion Missions and Storyline Where's the RP? Where's the RP? Super_Jenius 0 03/01/2009 20:44

I'm catching up on the story in the mission archives after being away for a while.  I've been reading the threads about players taking over the story from here.  I've never really participated in the RP world, so I'm kind of a noob in that area.  Have players been creating their own stories up to this point and playing them out in events?  If so, how do you participate in that?  All I ever see on the MxO Player Events page are contests and radio stations.  Or is this just about knowing the story so you can write in the RP section of the forums or stay in character in the game and keep it all in context?

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Looking for Team/Organization Chat Channels Looking for Team/Organization Chat Channels Super_Jenius 0 02/27/2007 19:01
This isn't an original idea, but it would be nice if MxO had a "Looking for Team" chat channel to make it easier to team up with other people in your org.  My faction is small these days, so finding help for Pandora's Box or Area K isn't easy.  The channel would also be good for lowbies trying to find a group to level.  WoW used to have a "Looking for Group" channel, and it worked pretty well, IMO.  They replaced it with a nice LFG tool, but people just use the Trade channel now when they want to recruit help.

There is some spam, but it's not as bad as you might think.  To help alleviate that, you could also create organization channels where people could share information, trade, and chit-chat, keeping the LFT channel mostly clear.  A player can always turn off the org channel if it gets too busy.  I know this has been asked for before, but I don't remember if or why it was rejected.  Since we have faction channels, how hard can it be?  In any case, designated channels for helping people get together in an MMO seems like a good thing to me.
Development Discussion Development Roundtable Convert Max XP to $Info Convert Max XP to $Info Super_Jenius 0 03/23/2007 11:08
This one's been stated before.  Once you reach max XP, I think XP should automatically be converted to $Info.  It would make me feel like I'm getting full credit for things I do in the game at level 50.  You could use the org rep as a % multiplier, which would encourage players to get max rep.

Rarebit has stated that there is already too much info floating around in the game.  Obtaining and leveling all abilities costs a LOT, but the upcoming Binary Boy style collectors could be an $info sink in addition to collecting items.
Development Discussion Development Roundtable Change Stackable Items (Mostly Code Bits) to 40. Re:Change Stackable Items (Mostly Code Bits) to 40. Super_Jenius 0 03/27/2007 17:42
Good idea.  At one point, I think they talked about adding 20 slots to the code archive for org. abilities, but I guess that isn't going to happen.  For now, I have all abils except the Data Miner tree.  It ain't worth the space it takes in the code archive.

News and Announcements Broadcast Depth Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008 Re:Image Retrieval - February 07, 2008 Super_Jenius 0 02/07/2008 12:05
It's looking good.  Here are my speculations:

  • This will be a free-for-all PvP area.  You can gank enemies and friendlies alike.
  • You will enter the construct through your normal archivist with a book, or as someone else suggested, through the Construct section at a hardline.
  • You will spawn randomly at one of the 7 proxies inside.
  • You will be flagged PvP upon entering the area or upon tapping a data node.  I think the former, because the 7 random proxies are probably there to help prevent spawn camping.
  • Any level can enter, but at your own risk.  In other words, don't show up unless you can protect yourself or you're with someone who can.
  • Data mining will be increased ten fold.
Comments:
  • I'm not a big fan of PvP, especially the Archives, but this one is different.  This is PvP with a purpose.
  • This will be the most dangerous place in the game, but the rewards will be great.  Greed is the name of the game.
  • It looks like there are plenty of places to hide and data mine when you are alone, if you can get to them.
  • Factions: You can finally claim a piece of real estate as your own, but it will be up to you to keep it.  This may get better if/when the buildings are opened up.
  • Data mining is actually worth something now.  I need to get my abils back.
  • What are you gonna do with all that info?  Uber gear should be on the way.
Again, these are just speculations.  I was hoping for a new district and possibly even raising the level cap.  But if you look past the surface, this could be more than just PvP and get us things we've been requesting for a long time.  I'll be re-subbing for this, and I don't think I'll be the only one.

It's looking great.  I don't see this being a construct, at least not like any construct we've seen before.  It's too much work for a place hardly anyone will visit.  Besides, it looks like the rest of the city instead of some other-worldly place.  I'm still thinking it's the aquaduct, or maybe the area northwest of it near the river bank.

All those buildings look like good places to run missions.  I'm hoping they go the whole nine yards and bust open the level cap.  That would mean new abilities too, so I'm not holding my breath.  In any case, I'm sure it's going to be good fun.
