As far as I'm aware, we haven't said that the QA server is temporary. It's my impression that it is here to stay as a mighty game-improving implement! But I could be mistaken.

Well, anything's possible, given enough broiled cheese.

I can see something like that being abused pretty quickly, though. Maybe it's just better to assume that everyone is RP-ing until they prove otherwise?

Well, if this has been done successfully in other MMOs, then I'm sure there's a way to do it right (which maybe should be discussed in a separate thread), but if it's just a flag toggle, my immediate thought was that any non-RP gankhead would toggle the flag on and go dance around other people who are actually trying to RP.

Or, I could just say that I don't know what the ETA is. I believe the last one Walrus gave was the earliest time it might be available. If it's been delayed, then Walrus only knows what the new ETA is.

Tseng. wrote:

is exiting missions via the window instead of the door a realistic posability for the game engine?

Not at this point. Doors (or moving windows) are game objects that control a little sliver of what we call "NavMesh" (tm!) on the ground, covering the width of the door. Every area in the game that allows you to stand on it is covered with this invisible layer of NavMesh. If an area doesn't have NavMesh, you can't stand there. Simple as that. So the only thing that stops you from walking right through a wall, for instance, is that there's no NavMesh going through that wall.

So if you wanted to go out a window, that window would have to have NavMesh in it, connected to the ground on either side of the window. This would require new window/wall geometry for every room type in which you wanted one of these windows. You'd probably need a pretty good number of them to match even a small amount of our existing decor types. That would be a considerable art task.

Then you'd need to create a window game object to put in place of the existing windows, which would toggle the NavMesh on the window sill on and off, just like doors toggle the NavMesh in their doorway on and off. That would be relatively easy.

But then you'd need to go and place that window object, along with the new wall geometry, in our existing rooms. In our world design tool system, this would mean exploding each type of building into its component floors, exploding each floor type into its component rooms, exploding each room type into its component floor/wall/ceiling pieces, replacing the old window with the new window art and window game object, then rebundling the room (this does cool stuff like calculating the interior lighting and generating the NavMesh), rebundling the floor, and rebundling the building. Oh, and then you have to rebundle the entire world.

Not only would that take forever, but it would generate a patch so huge that it would crash the internet, ending civilization as we know it.

Before civilization ended, though, we might have to consider how to get players and NPC followers to play some kind of "I'm ducking and crawling through a window now" animation.

One slightly modified approach might be just to play that animation and 'port the user through the window, if it were unlocked, rather than using a NavMesh, but then we'd have to have the game object know how to handle that kind of teleportation, and we'd have to teach NPCs to know how to activate it.

It would be simpler, therefore, just to end civilization straight off the bat.

My other character was inspired by Bubba Smith's officer Moses Hightower in the "Police Academy" movie series, and by cheesy '80s crime movies in general.

Balance
Detect Traps

Disarm Traps
Energized Attacks
Hyper Strength
Ignore Pain
Impart Invisibility
Power Shot
Precise Blow
PunishingBlows
Purity
SpinningFlower

ZenMaster

Some of those are Zen Master abilities, for which we'll have a refund sell-back thingy, as Walrus has announced previously.

One question that's been on a lot of players' minds for a long time now is this: where do the Machine and Merovingian redpills go when they're not jacked in and not on their hovercrafts? It's doubtful that they're all living in Zion. Many of us have assumed that they have bases somewhere in the real world.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was more of a question for Paul Chadwick. ^^;;

We asked Paul about that a while back, and he hadn't fleshed that aspect of the story out yet, but he definitely agreed that they wouldn't be in Zion. It isn't clear if they have large, established bases on the scale of Zion, of if they're scattered around in smaller waystations.

Although we would like to figure out a way to do it that will tie them together both with the other neighborhood contacts, and with the story of the Matrix as a whole.

Vector's PVP nature complicates Live Event plans a bit, but we certainly don't intend to give it less attention than the other servers.

While we no longer have the staff to run every event on every server, this carries the side benefit of allowing us to tailor each event to the strengths of the server on which it appears. So Vector will sometimes be getting different types of events than you'll see on the other servers.

How has events changed since SOE took over in terms of the rewriting of the storyline with Paul Chadwick approach...

Well, Paul's always been our storyline writer, so there hasn't been any change there.

The main difference is that we no longer have a Live Events Team, so we're limited in the number and scope of story character live events we can run. We're working on ways to make these more effective, and to have them tie them in directly with Paul's story--and in that respect I think there's room for us to improve on what the old LET was doing, as they were less familiar with the main storyline than our remaining designers are.

We're also working on coordinating with a group of players, LESIG, to get players directly involved in bringing the storyline to the community, both by allowing them to assist story characters in Live Events, and by helping them organize their own player-run events.

I don't think so, although I remember watching some of the other members of the team working on them.

But I was one of the remote demo-ers for our last E3 appearance, involved in those big PVP brawls around Mara Central. I even had some kind of studly name...uh...I think maybe I was "Apollo"?
