For update 53, I repacked some of our specularity textures that had been broken since...probably forever. This restored shiny highlights to items that have always looked properly shiny in our model tools, but have had no highlights in the game itself, such as Agent glasses, and many types of leather clothing. Scattered reports indicate that some items now have inappropriate specularity; for instance, some felt/cloth items that should have no shine are shiny, and some items are shiny with a color tint in the shine that changes the overall color of the item to the wrong hue. Please list such items here, with: a) The complete name of the item b) A reasonably sized screenshot showing the problem

Romav asked about getting the character dialog from the Death of the Destroyer event, so here goes.
This main chunk is from a doc written by Paul Chadwick.

1. Announcement on Data Node One
Death of a Destroyer
DATA NODE ONE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Time is ripe. The Assassin must be eliminated. It will take massive effort – he’s been infesting the Matrix like the insect swarm he is. His every aspect must be exterminated in proper order. Each Organization sees the wisdom in this. Or they will. Each will play its part.
Join in avenging the death of Morpheus – and the salvation of the Matrix.
Know this: things can get worse before they get better.
Day 2: Seraph Introduced Oracle
SERAPH: Greetings to you all. A grave situation has arisen. She wishes to address you. Please keep your distance, and accord Her respect. And above all, listen.
Day 2: Oracle Script
I don’t know if there were flies in the Garden of Eden. But we have them in the Matrix. It’s a problem.
These aren’t just pests. They spread a sort of disease. This program, The Assassin, is taking his function of disposal to extremes. The Matrix can be stressed beyond its ability to self-repair. This could be the time that happens.
I can’t see beyond certain choices. The future depends on what you choose.
Earlier, you chose well. You managed to destroy the Corrupted, the great man-shaped swarms. That was the first step.
Now smaller Corrupted, the RSIs of helpless Bluepills consumed by flies, stalk the Matrix. They must be eliminated. Only then, when these false aspects of The Assassin are gone– think of them as his projections into fourth-dimensional space – can his true aspect be destroyed.
That’s the one that wears the mask. It killed Morpheus. My friend.
That time will come, if now you can destroy the Corrupted.
Day 2:
ATTACK ON OOKAMI
System Message: The Assassin has attacked one of the Merovingian’s own. Ookami is in critical condition – why she is still living is a mystery. The Merovingian is at the end of his patience; he instructs his operatives to seek and destroy the Assassin – before the rival organizations do.
Day 3: Niobe
A promising avenue has opened. The Assassin fancies himself an historic figure. He’s written a memoir. Parts of it fall out of Corrupted as code bits. They’re readable, but fragmentary – and they seem to suggest where he haunts, mostly places associated with disposal. Trash. Sewage. Decay.
We think we have a way to kill him, but first we must know where to find him. We’ve got to collect those code bits and piece them together. Cooperate. Share information. That’s key.
Day 3: Agent Pace
Rosapillore, tutto ha senso ora. These code bits, shed by The Corrupted, they have clues to where The Assassin returns, the places he feels most vivo. He writes them himself, making his own grattacapo! We must collect them, assemble them, glean their meaning.
Soon a method of decompiling The Assassin will be at hand. But first, find him; assembling the code bits is the way.
Day 3: Flood
Attend me, my swashbucklers. It’s a sad day when an old friend flies off the handle and raises a stink. Regrettably, the Assassin broke all of Ookami’s fingernails and then some. Poor little bit…flea-bitten girl.
This just won’t do. Nobody messes with the Merovingian’s associates. You bon vivants must show the cave-bats and the mechadamia nuts how it’s done. Scoop up the code bits these Corrupted drop when you deliver the coup de grace. Assemble them. Read the night thoughts of porcelain-puss. Seems they tip off where he returns to clean his wings.
Soon we’ll have some delightful fly swatters for you.
Day 4:
System Message: Insecticide spray guns are now available from all organizations. Contact your controller to obtain them. This is the only way to kill the true aspect of The Assassin. You want one.
Day 5:
System Message: The Assassin has split into five aspects. Each has human form and porcelain mask. They may be weaker for splitting. But they have scattered to different locations, believed to be those hinted at in the code-bit messages. Good hunting.
Day 5: Niobe
Congratulations. You did it. The killing blow. The Assassin is no more. Look at the sky. You are entitled to the mask; take it. We’ve checked it; no flies. Keep it as a trophy. It’s yours, forever.
I thank you for helping to avenge Morpheus.
Day 5: Pace
Buono! The Matrix mends itself, thanks to you! It was your blow that finally felled the Assassin! Take his mask as a memento. It is free of his noxious code. You need not fear infection. It is yours forever. Look at the sky, clearing!
Day 5: Merovingian
I am grateful that you helped clean up this little problem. It seems you landed the killing blow, hmm? Not too bad. I have something for you. The porcelain mask; take it. A little keepsake. It has been sterilized, fear not. It is yours forever.
Day 5: Niobe
Niobe: We did it. The Assassin is no more. It’s confirmed. Morpheus, we did it for you. (NIOBE WEEPS, RECOVERS)
There’s a lot of credit to go around. If you landed a blow, let it be known. You deserve to be written in the history. And make no mistake, this was an historic event. Machines, Zion, even that French piece of trash code who created this problem – and his day will come, I promise – all worked together. For the first time. Because the Matrix, whatever else it is, is a commons. And the logic of the commons is the same whether it’s a stretch of land or an ocean or an atmosphere. If it’s threatened, the only way to save it is to unite in shared purpose.
So go, celebrate. This is a victory that will be remembered forever.
Day 5: Agent Pace
Thanks to you, the system heals, the Matrix endures. All Rosapillore, be they Machine, Zion, or Merovingian associates, seized the day and saved our precious existence. If you landed a blow, make it known; you deserve your place in the archives.
Let this be remembered; humans and machines can work together, unite, survive. It is the only avenue. We have tried war. It leads only to destruction. All consciousness must coexist.
Now, be allegro, my friends! You have saved your world!
Day 5: Merovingian
We have done well here. We have saved the Matrix from a noisome destruction, and done it with panache. All credit to you, my cavaliers. This insectile inconvenience was not a trivial challenge; indeed, dealing death was his specialty. That you brought him down fills me with – dare I say it? -- a fatherly pride.
There is grumbling from the churls in the other organizations that The Assassin was brought to the Matrix by me. Let them carp. It was the Machines who made him, after all…and he fed every pod-born like a mother nurses her infant; how very ungrateful!
That aside, this is a glorious day. Look at that sky. Not a fly, not a gnat amid its open, gusty expanse. Smell it; it is the clean scent of victory, and we share it today.
NPC RUMOR Here’s the latest: The Assassin’s Achilles heel is his egotism. He’s writing a memoir as he runs. A little legacy project. People find pieces. Get that memoir, or its fragments (then assemble them), and you’ll find what you need to find and kill him. If we can’t bring him down, well, stay indoors. The sky’s not going to be pretty.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think, though, that we rewrote those system messages into separate ones per org. Here's what we have in a macro file from the event, used for org broadcasts:
Agent Gray: Contacting all Machine operatives. We have learned that the Merovingian has instructed his subroutines to destroy the Assassin. There is a high probability that this was a response to an attack by the Assassin earlier today that left the RSI of the Merovingian's head lupine program, Ookami, in critical condition. All Machine operatives will cooperate with Merovingian forces for the deletion of the Assassin. That is all.
Flood: Attention! I have an important directive for all of you: hunt down the program known as the Assassin, and eradicate him from the Matrix. The Assassin has just attacked Ookami, who remains alive - somehow - but in critical condition. This was the small, but final, straw - our patience with the Assassin's shenanigans is at an end. Drop whatever you are doing and see to the Assassin's destruction immediately. I trust that I have made myself sufficiently clear.
Tyndall: Calling all Zion operatives. Zion intel reports that Morpheus'killer, the Assassin, has just attacked the Merovingian's lupine leader, Ookami, leaving her in critical condition. In response to the assault, the Merovingian has ordered the Assassin's extermination - apparently the Frenchman has run out of patience with his one - time ally. Commander Lock instructs all Zion operatives to cooperate with Merovingian forces as necessary to further Zion's cause: the complete destruction of the Assassin.
~~~~~
Agent Gray: To all Machine operatives: the flit guns that you will use to terminate the Assassin are ready for your use. It is imperative that you collect your flit gun immediately. Press "N," call my contact number, and download the "Flit Gun Requisition" critical mission routine. Each operative has been allocated one gun. Free an inventory slot to receive it. Further instructions will follow once you have obtained your flit gun. Do not attempt to engage the Assassin with any other weapon - this would be highly... inefficient.
Flood: Calling all of the Merovingian's subordinates. We now possess "flit guns," the only weapons capable of killing the Assassin. Stop wasting time, and pick up your flit gun immediately. Press "N," call my contact number, and you'll notice that you have a "Flit Gun Requisition" critical mission. Download this mission ASAP. Make sure that you have free inventory space for the flit gun. I will give you specific instructions on flit gun use once you've managed to collect your weapon. Now don't dawdle. This is already wasting enough of my precious time.
Tyndall: Warriors of Zion, it is my privilege to announce that our flit guns for combating the Assassin are now online. It is critical that every Zion operative requisition their flit gun immediately. Press "N," call my contact number, and download the "Flit Gun Requisition" critical mission. At that point I will direct you to one of our distribution centers in the City. I will have further instructions for you once you have obtained your flit gun. Make haste, Warriors! Equipped with these flit guns, we cannot fail to obliterate the Assassin from the Matrix.
~~~~~
Agent Gray: Scanners indicate that the Assassin has split his main self - image into five subroutines. The five subroutines have scattered across the Richland and Westview districts. It is probable that each subroutine is weaker than the whole. The flit guns should prove effective against them. Code fragments dropped by his Corrupted programs appear to contain stored data impressions of the Assassin's hideouts. Seek out the five subroutines and use the flit guns to delete them.
Flood: Our spies report that the Assassin has split into five separate aspects, each identical in appearance, but perhaps weaker than they were when combined. This would be an ideal time for you to terminate him with your flit guns, except that the five aspects have scattered across Richland and Westview. I've heard rumors that those Corrupteds of his drop memory fragments - thoughts hinting at his hiding - holes in the Matrix. Those hints may be of use in locating his five aspects.
Tyndall: Operatives, reports indicate that the Assassin has split himself into five copies, which have escaped across Richland and Westview. It is possible that, due to this split, each copy is less powerful than the normal Assassin. This could be our best chance to destroy him once and for all. Code dropped by his Corrupted creatures appears to contain fragments of his memories of hiding - places in the City. If you can decode the fragments, they may lead you to the Assassin's copies.
LESIG ran a fairly unique event recently, and would like to get feedback from players to help us plan future events:
"Some of you on Syntax have been working with the Brick and Slasher district gangs. This event was a little different in that, rather than having the reward go to the first person to complete an objective, the "winner" was determined by a point-based system. Players' factions received points for completing tasks like killing rival gang members, delivering gun shipments, and helping a friendly gang by "counterfeiting" clothing, as well as for various personal interactions like giving a /dap or laughing at the gang member's joke. Players also lost points for threatening the gang member or for killing his gang.
The points set up a fair, unbiased system for representing the biases of the Brick gang distributor so the event could be comprised of many small events and interactions that influenced the final outcome. Plus, nobody could know what might be getting them ahead in the rankings. All in all, it simulated a real life interaction.
What does the community think of a system like this and would they like to see it used in future events? Is there anything that could be added or changed to improve this system?"
All right, since Walrus already leaked the name of the new Zero One loot item, I may as well spur some discussion. So... There is a specific Matrix reference involved here. First person to post a framegrab in this thread showing the reference gets a shiny new Area K Trenchcoat mailed to the character of their choice by none other than the collector Binary Boy himself, once the update goes live.
When posting your framegrab, please give:
- exact in-game name of character who gets the coat
- name of server they're on
- desired gender of coat
Only the first person posting a framegrab from the correct scene wins, so get crackin'!
Just thought I'd ask, since this is a question that underlies a lot of discussion that goes on concerning features added to the game. I don't want you to think about what *isn't* the Matrix here--laser pew-pew discussions have already been done to death. And this isn't a question about MXO the game directly. In fact, just imagine that MXO doesn't exist. Clear your mind, and ask yourself: What is the Matrix to you?
Now, I know a lot of you like to complain that we never listen to players, so this may come as a bit of a nasty surprise, but in fact we do pay quite a bit of attention. Case in point: the feedback posted here about specific missions is very useful to me--it's pretty much the only way I have of being able to tell what is and isn't working about the missions I design. Sugaree's "Sugar Shack" threads on the collector missions have probably been the most helpful feedback I've ever got on missions, so a big thumbs up to her!
The rest of you have been slackin', but no more! I'm puttin' you chumps to work! Starting in chapter 5.3 I'm going to kick off separate discussion threads for each of the three new weekly critical missions, maybe even leaking out their titles a day in advance just to start the cycle of mass speculation, unrealistic expectations, and subsequent bitter disappointment that as developers we have grown to know and love among our players!
Once the missions actually come out and you play them, I expect you to flame away on the thread with comments about what you liked, didn't like, and so forth in that particular mission. It will be a veritable inferno of design feedback!
So yeah, I just thought I'd give you a little warning about that.
Walrus is living it up in San Diego for some big Community Relations conference, so here I am with a crude attempt at this week's Image Retrieval! What we have for you today is a little sequence showing an RSI Pill (work in progress) in action. You'll notice that something is different about the character after they take the teal pill. We've had a few forum maintenance periods over the past few days. After these periods, I found on one or more of my computers at work, even on multiple browsers, that I couldn't get certain posts or forum pages to load up, or that I was shown logged in as "Anonymous," and got stuck at a black screen if I tried to re-log. I've heard from a player that others are experiencing similar problems at the moment. I can't speak for everyone, but what fixed me up was closing all but one browser window, going to a non-station.com site, going into my browser's options (both Firefox and Internet Explorer), and clearing out my browser's cache, cookies, browing history, etc, then returning to the forums. You probably don't need to do all of that, but if you're having similar problems since the last forum maintenance we had mid-Friday, at least clearing your browser's cached data may help. I'm sure some of you will have more knowledge/information about this than I do, so please feel free to post whatever information you feel may be useful for helping your fellow players get back to being able to frolic on these crazy forums of ours.
