Community General Discussion What are your top 3 regrets in MxO? Re:What are your top 3 regrets in MxO? Ntrails 0 01/11/2007 08:58

  1. That they gave HJ Beta to free trial players, but that I cannot get it despite playing since english release.

  2. Not deciding on 1 tree as soon as CR2 came out, hence sticking with all my stats equal for ages. Bad decision

  3. See bullet point 1, and re-iterate.  It was (and is) obscene.

If that makes sense =P

It would, except neither contact nor storyline missions are truly much different from standard ones.  They nearly always take longer, are often harder, and don't seem to give significantly increased xp.  My alt won't bother doing them.  As for getting xp from hideouts - that is laughable.  To take on the number of mobs you have to - they MUST be blue, which means minimal xp.  Or take friends to help you - but you'd be better off grinding with said friends and none of the hideout drops are very good anymore.  Maybe the lancet as a sidearm.  Everything else - meh.

The only valuable break is archives - and they will cost a fortune in health pills, tacs and consumables before you get the drop. SO you need someone who can code em.

There simply is not enough incentive to data mine and the ability to locate luggables only works if the person doesnt go into a place you simply cant follow.

Well what if you're sick of running missions or farming mobs for cash? Then you can use Data Miner.

My God you would have to be bored.

Community General Discussion Will MXO ever get popular again? Re:Will MXO ever get popular again? Ntrails 0 01/16/2007 09:22

 Nope,

 Why?

Every new player of MMO's will pretty much be brought in through WoW (or one of the new games) since they have publicity.  Good publicity.  Since the only way anyone will hear of the matrix will be word of mouth (which is far from certain to be positive) or reviews (rarely glowing) no one is gonna spend money trying it.  With buddy keys or station passes we might get new players - but frankly few will stay around in this bug infested, stifled and empty world.   Sorry.

MxO is dead.  I just hope to play in the final event, they can use the end of beta trix again

R0u is mainly karate. I have no problems.

First off, consider the abilites that are available with early karate. Sky high, sidekick and a state special.  When compared to aikido which has two pointless abils and a state special until level 30.  Also remember that overhand smash uses karate so you get an acc bonus for using that compared to using aikido or fu with it.

As a second point, the only style that anyone uses in yuki to solo tengu - karate...... that is at level 25

Of the three styles, only karate and fu are usable at low levels much imho (yes aikido gets iron guard on style) so I shouldn't advise complaining about it.  And the debuffs shown are hardly game ending.

BLAP

Imagine, just for a moment, that PvP was purposeful in the constructs.

Imagine that in the constructs when you killed an opponent you could loot/would recieve a token. No's of these tokens could be exchanged for goods.  Imagine if 50 kills in various sakura instances could be exchanged for bandanna equivolents - which of course would need to be untradeable.

I am not saying the same loot as the bosses drop, but new loot, only achievable through PvP in the constructs.  Not only would this bring more people to the constructs, it would result in escalation - as more people died reinforcements would be called and there might even be large scale pointful PvP.

 Just a thought.

Edit: Consideration see's that people between orgs could come up with deals to farm tokens by respectively allowing themselves to be killed. Perhaps only allow tokens from people without DE. *shrugs*  It was merely a starting point of an idea.

  OK. Garu, GROW UP.

These forums don't have anything like the traffic for serious spam.  A ton of people??  Due to the low movement and inbuilt report mongers the mods would have no trouble finding and spooning anyone overdoing it.  5000 posts? Hell, that is a pretty hefty amount only achieveable by consistant posting over time in multiple forums. I'd be surprised if people even care enough to struggle for such ranks. However, equally, why not put them there anyway? I will hit 5k in time if the boards don't die completely.  But at current rates it will easily be another month.

I maintain there was nothing wrong with the old 'split' between lurker and poster ranks... but I guess that is too complex.  Equally, there was something enjoyable about NOT knowing the requirements, and finding them out as you go. But meh.  I also don't think ALL hard to achieve ranks should work on registration time.  Certain ranks could be triggered purely through threads visited, or replied to, or started, or many other factors.

Put simply, If you think that people will SPAM to boost to 5000 posts... lol.  100 posts a day is hard work, and you have to have the long registration too.

Eqaully I dislike the title Data spammer.  It seems derogatory, Spamtastic would be fine, purely due to the tongue in cheek nature.  Basically try not to tar all the people with high post counts as trolls.  Some (not all) have done a hell of a lot more to keep a community than those with 150 posts, heck, some are the reason  the low posters visit ===> to read good amusing stuffs.  Not to look at empty unchanging boards.

What?  You think I would stop posting because of a crappy rank colour? Lol.   I post, as I said, for entertainment. Only way to get rid of my posts is by stopping these boards being entertaining.... you really want that?

Incidentally. You want to deal with spammers you need to do a post/time online calculation.  I could do 50 posts in 1 hour or in 1 week. I am a spammer in one of those cases, not the other.    As for high post counts resulting in inspection by mods/CS.... lol.  You think they have time to trawl through 4000+ posts?  Or gonna judge on the most recent 50?  That would be absurd.  If the forums were full of SPAm I would be far more inclined to care. SO far there is a lack! As for me, if they ban me from the forums I quit the game. Sure, that shouldn't stop them - cause liek WoW this game has millions of subscribers so 1 more is irrelevant. I would suggest that sony like all companies ruled by the bottom line they will be VERY careful before alienating paying customers. Pblade has a truly astonishing post count, maybe .25 of those could be represented as SPAM. You would ban him? Despite being a pillar of the community (at least until he left.).

You want to deal with SPAM. Employ mods. That has been done. There are no further steps to take.  Making a pointless and uninvolving rank system will achieve nothing other than being pointless and uninvolving to ALL forumers.

Cut out the spam in the forums?

  LOL!

I mean jeez, I have seen practically no SPAM at all on vector - and that means about 2 active posts.  Worthless pointlessness ftw.  There used to be wars of people just chilling on the boards, 4-5 of us answering any and all posts just to have 6-7 seperate convo's.  Wow. Now there is no need for stickies on server forum cause nothing ever gets pushed off the front page.

As for ranks - *CENSORED* is the point when just about every vet has the same rank.  Post count ranks should be hitting the 5000+ for high. I can only assume that the last boards posts are added to these cause no way did I hit 4k+ on these PoS boards.  So Pblade must be on millions by now....

Additionally, please define 'uninvolving'.

By uninnvolving I mean a system that will have almost no impact or interest.  I do not, i repeat NOT, want people posting for the sake of forum rank.  But I do recall joy and amusement at suddenly and perhaps unexpectedly gaining a new rank.  When raijinn gave us ranks he did so with no explanation and suddenly the community got together and tried to puzzle out the system. I have little time for 'joel thunderguard raijinn', but I do believe - especially in hindsight - that his was a very good course.

The old boards DID have a function deciding time logged on/in to the forums. i.e. browsing them.  Mere time since registering has no relevance.  I could spend one in every 10 weeks spamming furiously and it would give the same post count since registary and a continually average poster. I was unaware that SoE had not retained this functionality. (to be fair I hate these boards and always have.)

I could be registered for 2 years, making 1 post a week. Or I could be registered for two years, never post, and then throw 100 posts out in a a week.  Same post count. One is SPAM t'other is not.  Therefore the 'post count against time' system is clearly flawed.

I will freely admit that I only read about 80% of the thread before posting - most of it scanning.  I put too little time in now to read religiously. But Pblade is merely the extreme example I use.  Many people will consider my posting Spam -> But there is a thread on vector forums by madbent (who I don't really know apart from by reputation,  and tbh has never been a big contributor to my posting world or in game world) saying 'thanks' for livening up the boards. So your ideal rank system would be one where the community has to 'get together' and work out how it's structured? Doesn't sound like a particularly grand aim to me. SMILEY My proposed system doesn't take that away - the new rank system is clearly defined as it stands, so we've already lost what modicum of 'involvement' the previous system offered.

I know what the old boards could do. There was a considerable number of different statistics they could use when defining ranks. Of course I want the old boards back (these poorly hacked versions of JForum are a disgrace to professional web development). But we don't have the old boards, so we have to make do with the few statistics at our disposal.

Every ranking system will be flawed. But mine is less flawed than a system that only relies on time. The goal is (or should be) to make the ranking system apply superior ranks to as many worthy people as possible, with as few false positives as possible. My system has a higher chance of achieving that.

If 'spam' has some sort of purpose and manages to improve the community in some way, it isn't spam. It is the moderators' job to manage spam as best they can, so a ranking system should be able to just work without having to take spammers into consideration. We know that isn't the case, though; we know that the moderators aren't infallable, so my system does take spammers into account and tries its best to handle them. And so far it's the only system (if memory serves) that has attempted this.

I was merely quoting Raijins system as one that WAS involving.  It would not work again. It was merely a reference.  I have no grand aims - this game ran out of anything grand for me some time ago.  Involving is merely a way of describing the way forum rank affects you. I still advocate your system as the only one with anything like sufficient varience. I am bored of seeing 70% the same colour on the boards.

A system relying only on time is, imho, like a broken pencil...... pointless.

I do not believe any system, including yours, will ever 'handle' SPAM.  Back when no-spoon existed no one gave a *CENSORED*, it made no difference apart from posting rights.  However degrading you attempt to make high post count ranks they will still be a badge of honour to some extent.  In that sense I do disagree with you, but it is still FAR better than the current system that has only token post counts.
