Your background info cannot be changed at this point in time. Maybe someday the devs will add that.

From the first dev journal ...
"We know that certain areas of the Hacker tree do not play nicely with the rest of the Disciplines. After much deliberation, we decided that Hackers will remain unchanged in the short term. Since we’re overhauling the current combat system, it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of resources balancing the Hacker tree at the moment—we would only have to rebalance them after the combat changes are implemented. However, we also know that something needs to be done in the meantime. So we’re adding a temporary measure to help players deal with Hackers: A new consumable which can be used while in a pacified, stunned, or rooted state. This pill will clear the negative effect and return movement control to the player and will have a medium to long reuse timer. It won’t level the playing field completely, but should make the current situation more tolerable while we work on implementing the proper solutions."

"As we saw in the movies, operators in the hovercraft can download programs directly into the Matrix. After the Smith incident (in The Matrix Revolutions), Zion developed more direct transmitters that allow operatives to access the hovercraft remotely. This led to experiments in more directed attacks on the simulation itself--viruses that target the stability and coherence of the Residual Self-Image (RSI), the manifestation of self and other within the system.
In other words, hackers do have the ability to attack their opponents at a distance by targeting them with a virus."
That's from Gamespot's Q&A with William Westwater. You can read that and more here ...

First off ... I'm the kind of person who, after playing a regular console RPG for an extended period of time, tends to forget some of the things that were said and done earlier in the game. When this happens I usually find a transcript of the game's dialogue online to refresh my memory.
Also, a friend of mine wasn't very happy with the fact that, in MxO, the older critical missions are removed and replaced with newer ones. He understood why it had to be done, but he also wished he could play the older ones that he'll miss out on.
So I thought about it and came up with an idea. A mission archive simulation. I guess the closest thing to this idea would be the Zion Archive as it was depicted in "The Second Renaissance", but interactive. Basically, you can choose to redo any previous critical mission.
From my point of view, this would be helpful in a number of ways. For starters, anyone who wanted to refresh their memory about what happened in previous missions can do so with the mission archive (these days when I want to refresh my memory I go to the journal section of http://www.mxoarchive.com, which has several lines from a number of previous critical Zion missions, but it's not a complete recording of them).
Also, any new person who wanted to do older critical missions for whatever reason (maybe as a kind of "history lesson", or if they just wanted to see the content they've missed) can do so using the mission archive. Most threads and websites that list what's happened so far only list what has happened in the live events, and rarely what's happened in missions (this includes the parts of the story that have been posted on Data Node One).
Now, I'm not sure how people will react to this next idea, but here it is ... I would also like the mission archive to have more than just one organization's critical missions in it.
There rarely seems to be any inter-organizational discussions about what happened in their respective critical missions. I know very little about what happened in most of the critical missions for the Machines and the Merovingian. But the fact is that there are times when each organization gets information that the others don't get.
For example, Morpheus' past was split up amongst the three organizations' critical missions. Zionists learned about his early days. The Machine missions had information about one person that Morpheus thought was the One. And the Merovingian missions had information about Morpheus' time in a relaxation construct recovering from post traumatic stress disorder brought on mostly by the torture he received at the hands of the Agents towards the end of the first movie.
I only knew this information because I focused on Machine and Merovingian missions on the QA server. I know some of you don't mind having multiple characters, but I prefer to have one on the live servers because it's easier to manage, in my opinion. Sorry.
There are even some documents found in critical missions that are exclusive to an organization's missions. There are documents that were found in Machine and Merovingian critical missions that were available ages ago that I've only recently found out about.
If the mission archive gave players access to the older missions of all organizations, then it would help bring people up to speed and on the right page. And information wouldn't be limited to an organization's missions, so people wouldn't feel like they're only getting part of the story.

In fact, some of the new gun animations (particularly the finishers) seem designed with a longer range interlock still in place. The new power single and dual SMG power finisher where you flip towards your opponent and then shoot, for example, almost always looks terrible because you end up inside your opponent when you are doing the move. With the old "long range" interlock, however, these moves would have worked perfectly.
If I remember correctly, the "new" finishers aren't truly new. They're from the first combat system. They'd occur when you finished off an opponent with a roll of over 100.

Maybe neighborhood contact missions should be added as well, but they'll only appear in the mission archive construct after you've completed them? There are a few neighborhood contact missions that reference previous missions that you've done for them. And I wouldn't be surprised if brand new neighborhood contact missions show up that are continuations of older missions (assuming the devs decide to add new missions to the neighborhood contacts, though I'd be surprised if they didn't add some eventually).
I mean, let's say they add some new missions for the neighborhood contacts in the Slums, and you start a mission that is basically a continuation of an older mission. There's a chance you wouldn't remember exactly what happened in the older mission.

I'd rather wait and play the game myself before I form any opinions about it.
The fact is, I'm interested, but I'm not a huge fan of rehash games. I'd be more excited about PoN if it was completely new, and not the trilogy with some new stuff.

They never stated that the Machines didn't know where Zion was. In fact, in one scene in Reloaded, Lock mentioned previous attacks to Zion that they've had to defend themselves from.
If you're referring to the whole "Zion Mainframe" thing, that was so they could enter it and cause havoc.

I wouldn't mind if disarming was an occasional effect. It seems weird that people are fighting in close combat with opponents carrying firearms and they can't disarm them. Plus, MxO is now the only Matrix game where you can't disarm opponents.
And yeah, I guess I miss the animations as well.

I don't think there were ones for each event, but here are several from the Hunt for Morpheus event.
Oh god, man is not meant to live this way: underground, dirty, and smelly. Like some rat in a sewer. I won't miss this place when I am reconnected.
Being plugged into the Matrix is the evolution of mankind. Zionites falsely believe they are moving forward when they are, in fact, regressing. Living in a cave and eating gruel is their idea of progress? The Matrix is the way forward.
Morpheus is cutting his own throat with these bombings and threats. I know for a fact that people within his own organization have been throwing around the idea of taking him out themselves. That dumb **bleep** is handing us victory on a platter.
We haven't been idle during this recent influx of redpills. You will be surprised and pleased to discover the pervasiveness of our influence in each of the Organizations. If we removed our masks, some powerful faces in the Matrix would turn red, and some heads would roll. We must be particularly careful to guard our identities until it is time to go forward with phase 2. We are extremely close.
Old Morpheus has condemned us all to a life of misery with his archaic and blinkered belief that all mankind would like to live in a cave. I think that the same tainted perspective that has brought him so much power also leaves him exposed. A redpill that could mask his hatred with feigned belief could get close to him.
You must take extreme care to keep your identity veiled when carrying out missions for us. If one of your Zionite "compatriots" recognizes you, it could compromise our entire plan. Remain vigilantly masked. Destroy this transmission immediately after reading it.
"Ignorance is bliss." It is such a cliché, and yet it so perfectly expresses the reality of our existence. I was happy in the Matrix, but that happiness was taken away from me by Morpheus and his deceitful promotion of consciousness. Before we can return to our oblivion, we must make sure that no one is in a position to awaken us again.
Our research on memory washing and permanent reconnection to the Matrix is showing some positive results; however, it will all be a meaningless exercise if we cannot stop Morpheus and the Zionites from indiscriminately imposing their "awakened" will on bluepills everywhere. Is there any progress on that front?
Welcome my brothers and sisters. I know that the very mention of Morpheus fills you with hatred. I can tell you that in my heart I feel the same way. The burden of his deceit weighs heavily on us all. But your suffering will be assuaged by the fact that each day a reversion to the time before the horror of existence was known draws nearer.
With Morpheus out of the way and the potential ally we will make in the process of eliminating him, we should have little trouble completing the rest of our plan. People will have a more informed choice: return to the oblivion of the Matrix, or die.
It seems that Morpheus is a very unpopular man these days. Whoever takes him out will definitely make some friends in high places. If we play our cards right, we might even be able to get some technological assistance out of this -- grease the wheels of our efforts to reinstitute ourselves into the Matrix.
It is too risky to re-enter bluepill life with someone like Morpheus running around out here. After all, we all made the choice to take the red pill once, so it stands to reason that we would do it again after the brainwashing and reinsertion is complete. We need some insurance before we return.
My insertion into the Zionite military has gone smoothly. I have assumed the name Pfc. James Dwight, working as a recon specialist. There is considerable philosophical fragmentation on the ground here. The official Zion line dictated by Lock doesn't seem representative of the general feeling here. I will report more as I see fit.
Dwight: Sounds to me like Lock wants Morpheus out of the picture. Do you think that he would go so far as to have him killed? Sgt. Clark: No way! Lock is spineless. He'll hang him out to dry, but he'd never order him killed. Don't know which is worse really. Pfc. Dwight: How do people feel about it around here? Sgt. Clark: Morpheus has more support within the military than Lock knows. This inactivity isn't sitting well with a lot of the boys. If something happens to Morpheus, well, I wouldn't like to be in Lock's shoes. Lots of boys are going to hold him responsible. Enough talk, get back to work soldier.
Neo's Army. Meeting tonight at 8pm in Barrack 24. Come discuss the future of Zion, and Lock's controversial abandonment of Morpheus.
I attended a meeting last night in Barrack 24. It appears that the support for Morpheus is more pervasive and intense than any of us expected. One person stood out in particular, a persuasive and energetic young soldier that everyone affectionately called "the Kid." I choked down my hate and played a convincing Neo-phile. The violent hints towards Lock resonated well with the boys. After the meeting, Sgt. Clark approached me and asked me to come to another meeting tomorrow night. I will write more when I can.
You seem like a bright young man. It's clear that you think Lock is steering Zion in the wrong direction. Well, how would you feel about playing a proactive role in getting Zion back on the course Neo set for us? We are working closely with Morpheus in an attempt to recover Neo's body.
It would be an honor to serve under the Great Morpheus. If there is anything that I can do to assist you, do not hesitate to ask. I have always dreamed of meeting him, he's been such a source of inspiration to me throughout my life.
Still no contact with Morpheus yet. In the meantime, I've been attempting to incite anti-Lock sentiments within these fringe groups. There is a good chance that with a little gentle direction, the two groups within Zion will be at each other's throats. Zion would collapse in on itself. Mopping up the survivors would be easy.
Sgt Clark: I'm tired of sitting on my *CENSORED* down here. I want to hit the streets with Morpheus. I want to plant some bombs. I want to kill some agents. I want Neo's body back as much as Morpheus. The Kid: Calm down. The time for action is soon, but you've got to be patient. Sgt. Clark: **bleep** it! I'm tired of all this talk. All we do is talk. The Kid: Well, I spoke to Morpheus earlier today. Sgt. Clark: What?! The Kid: He said to sit tight. He said that he would give us an unmistakable call to action very soon.
I don’t know if "the Kid" is really in contact with Morpheus but I am following him day and night. If he talks to Morpheus, I'll know about it. Morpheus should have his guard down around his followers; it could be an easy kill.
Morpheus has gotten a message through! These underground groups are mobilizing terrorist attacks against machines as we speak. I'm not certain how many independent cells there are, but I fear that this could bring the entire Matrix down. Spread the word. Consider every Zionite you see an enemy, and engage them.
I just sent a message to our operative in the Machine Organization with lists of all known underground members. Hopefully there is still time for agents to disrupt the attacks. My cover has been compromised. I probably won't make it out of here. Good luck.
I have successfully insinuated myself into the Machine Redpill Society. We should have little trouble recruiting and garnering support for our cause here. There appears to be something big in the works. I will investigate and report back when I know more.
That's about it, but here's one that you might be interested in.
First Agent: They want to awaken others. Second Agent: It is the agreement. First Agent: With time, the Matrix will be stressed. It could fail. Second Agent: A system of control is needed. One moment... A decision has been made: Do not interfere with the masked humans. First Agent: Acknowledged.

At least give the guy some sunglasses. It's pretty sad that he's not even wearing shades. Anthony Wong may not have agreed to having his likeness in the game but shaving him down was good enough. You didn't have to take away the man's sunglasses, too. In the Matrix taking away a man's sunglasses is like taking away his beer in the real. It's a line you just don't cross.
No wonder Captain Roland is such a jerk. Nobody gave him sunglasses.

Actually, he uses the past tense.
I can confirm this. He now says that the truce only "served" to show Zion's weakness. In the past, it was "serves". I'll add it to my NPC Dialogue section when I get the chance.

EDIT: Although the thing about Agents on Zionites may be in one of the Zion "seduction" missions (the ones you have to do before you get crits) rather than in the very first Introduction missions, specifically.
Yeah, "Welcome to the Matrix" is the mission you're referring to, and it has been altered to fit the current post-truce conditions.
I've only gone through the introduction missions so far, and I haven't had time to study all of my screenshots of them. But if anyone is interested, here are some changes I've found out so far ...
"The Potential" refers to Commander Roland instead of Lock.
Starschwar tells me that the Merovingian seduction mission, "Fatal Frame-Up", which was originally about trying to weaken the relations between Zion and the Machines, is now about trying to weaken Zion/EPN relations.
I've also done the first "Meet Niobe" mission. It still uses Commander Lock's dialogue, but they're referred to as archived messages in the Zion Mainframe. One NPC says that they'll have to have Commander Roland record some new messages someday.
Someday I'll get around to adding these changes to my site. Probably under "Post-truce changes" in the transcripts I already have of the original versions of these missions. The Niobe missions will probably be the hardest to document. I wish the QA server was still around, then I'd probably just /copychar my main character to it and redo the Niobe missions. That's how I was able to document them before.
Also, it's going to be difficult for me to get a transcript of the original version of the final Niobe mission, because my rep is only 124, and the change has already occurred, unless Rarebit missed it.
*sighs* So much to do ... -_- Help would be nice.

I just did a check of what I've documented from the Zion introduction and seduction missions, along with the first two Meet Niobe missions.
Erm, Rarebit ... sorry to give you a little more work, but you seemed to have missed a spot in the second Meet Niobe mission (the one that occurs after you've completed all of the seduction missions) ...
"Hey, don't worry about Gnat. Even with the peace, things can still be stressful. It can get under your skin, you know?"
This bit of dialogue occurs when you speak to an NPC after you've witnessed the automatic exchange of dialogue between the stressed out NPC and the one character trying to make a joke about some guy accidentally downloading something "last week".

Probably because 1.1 takes so long to load when streaming off the web site. New players seeing nothing but a black screen after the tutorial is finished might view it as a problem.

Are those still in the game? I haven't seen them in ages.

The reason Niobe's character model looks like it does is because Niobe is now played by Gina Torres. The character model is based on her physical apperance. According to an earlier article, the actor who played the Kid in the sequels didn't sign on for MxO either, so the Kid's character model will also look different, most likely resembling the person who is now in the role.
Also, Atari has one more Matrix game on their contract, unless they decide to extend it. And I have yet to see any proof of this rumored likeness copyright problem.

I pretty much agree with the given information. It sucks that Ghost is mute during the cinematics. *GRRR.*
Well, he'd have to shout through the glass, and I'm not entirely sure what he'd have to say. ^^;

I hope Niobe and Ghost get back their likeness. If not, ah well. No big deal.
Well, from what I can tell, for Niobe and Ghost to get their likenesses back, Jada Pinkett Smith and Anthony Wong need to lend their likenesses to MxO, which they didn't do in the first place. Message Edited by Othinn1 on 10-06-2005 11:19 PM

I've been curious about this since the LET characters started showing up back in late beta. I know you guys can assume the identity of movie characters and MxO storyline characters using LET tools. But I've always wondered, can you assume the identities of other characters, like the neighborhood contacts?

Personally, I don't think people should take the levels and displayed disciplines of story characters very seriously, especially in missions.
Only NPC's can go above the level cap. But playable Characters that the LET members use can only go to lvl 50.
*nods* I was giving an example of the changing loadouts and levels that the storyline characters display throughout the story, and why it shouldn't be taken too seriously. I know that LETs can only go up the level 50.

It's a region-specific mission, and you'll see why when you access it. You need to be in or near Richland to receive it. When I got it, I was on a bridge stretching between the Slums and the Barrens. Message Edited by Othinn1 on 10-07-2005 11:42 PM

The truth is, Operetta isn't new. Towards the end of beta, Operetta accidentally became Grisaille, who is the neighborhood contact of Stamos. If you tried to get missions from Operetta-in-Grisaille's-body the game would tell you that the contact didn't have any missions for you. They fixed it a while ago.

It's both, according to the first movie. It's spelled "Metacortex" outside the building (just as it is in MxO), but a sign that we briefly see while Neo is trying to escape from the Agents says "Meta Cortechs". It's not MxO's fault. PoN is just pulling a nice bit of continuity there. ^_~

Wouldn't people start rushing through neighborhood contact missions until they were all done, causing most of the player base to drain the content rather quickly (like what happened with Pandora's Box)? Personally, I do one neighborhood contact mission a day. I've got most of Westview's contacts, and all of International's and Downtown's to get through, so I've still got plenty of stuff to do in-game.
Also, in Pandora's Box you could receive the reward items again and again by redoing the missions. Neighborhood contact missions can't be redone at this point in time, so there would most likely be complaints similar to the ones from people who can't get items from certain Archives once they reached a certain level.
Personally I don't care. I don't do things for special items. But if it means that the game will be reprogrammed so I can redo neighborhood contact missions whenever I want, then I'm all for it. ^_^
