  Update

Live event characters no longer have a funny tag in front of their names (e.g. {1}Tungsten), so their names are properly highlighted and coloured again.

Considering this was fixed using a single line of code a mere 50 characters long, I feel rather stupid for not doing this earlier. SMILEY

H'mm. Looks good, of course, but I think the page is getting a little long. I'm running at the common 1280 by 1024, and I can only see the nav bar, the news and the Datamine image before having to scroll down. The dynamically loading news box is a nice idea, but it could make space for something else. And the two Events boxes (Live and... I guess the second is supposed to be Player) only need to be half their current width if you ask me.

Whatever the case, I like the style! I'm kinda envious too; my visual creativity's gone down the toilet the past couple of years. I can still do the programming but my design stinks at the moment. SMILEY Yours doesn't.

It's not Vista's fault, it's not Nvidia's fault - it is old (somewhat dubious) code designed for XP, and a failure to upgrade it accordingly.  Vista is not a new thing anymore and it is the dominant OS being installed on all the new laptops and systems these days.  XP will be phased out just as Win98 did before it.  Failure to adapt the game to the changes of the computer world is no excuse.  Nvidia cards also are not new and change quickly from one card to the next - as they continue to push the threshold of the virtual world, gaming industry. Players shouldn't have to be stuck with and old OS and outdated cards just to be able to play 1 game.  From a marketing standpoint, this goes against all logic.  And the sales point - not just the art is the first and foremost important thing.

They may not even be able to fix it. From what I remember, this isn't their graphics engine: it was licensed from another company. In either case the Devs that worked on it are long gone, so whoever is tasked with looking into its faults is going to have to learn the structure of the entire engine.

Shinryu wrote:

I think DarkHawk does make some valid points.   While the new trinkets and whatnot are, in some cases, very nice, there are still issues within the gameplay that need attention, like clothing stacking, enemies leaving mission areas and breaking/out of line interlock animations to name just a few.  These are glaring issues that both bother the vets and turn off new comers in one fell swoop.  There are also things like bringing back the old combat animations and reworking the faction controls, to name a couple, which would be positive changes/enhancements that wouldn't be bug fixes but also would be a lot more impactful than fancy new t-shirts.

Those things do need to be fixed. But it's a question of manpower. Quite simply, they don't have it. And as Rarebit says, halting the production of new clothing items and fixing textures isn't going to free up manpower to fix these other issues: Rarebit doesn't have the technical expertise to deal with these problems. That's where Dracomet and NoRepro/9mmFu come in.

Edit: The game engine is Lithtech Discovery, based on Lithtech 2.2 - obviously made by Monolith. But still, as I said, the people who worked on that are long gone. It's not a simple matter of scanning the code for a quick fix to the Vista problem.

I can vouch for the /who areas (regionservers) being completely messed up. SMILEY The area covered by a regionserver changes based on how many people are actually in a particular place. If there are lots of people, the area shrinks; if there are hardly any, it expands.

I've seen a /who area span the northern regions of Downtown and International at the same time. SMILEY

Support Forums General Technical Help and Questions Downtown Still! Re: Downtown Still! Procurator 0 08/31/2005 03:06
In the northern districts of Downtown it isn't just normal lag, it's some sort of freakish überlag. I was in Park East yesterday and found myself unable to do anything at all. Attacks wouldn't work on NPCs, hardlines wouldn't do anything (I tried the exit command a few times, to no avail), chat didn't work and it took the game a good few seconds to work out I'd pressed my hyper-jump key. /jackout wouldn't work either.

So I legged it southwards to Maribeau. All my commands from Park East must have been queued up somewhere, because as soon as I hit the border between the two neighbourhoods all hell broke loose: in less than a second my attacks on NPCs came in unsuccessful, all the chat messages from the past few minutes finally reached me, a load of 'Do you wish to leave the Matrix' boxes popped up, and I got jacked out of the game (obviously from my /jackout commands).

Normal lag (like the stuff in southern Downtown and Mara) I can deal with, but this is crazy!

Desert of the Real SOE Discussion Soe Launcher going live ? Re:Soe Launcher going live ? Procurator 0 05/06/2008 05:51
Oh, I use it for spying on the game without launching MxO itself. It's good for seeing how many people are in-game and is as close to the old out-of-game AOL chat as we're ever going to get.

But for those functions, the launcher is way too bloated, way too slow and... Why is it made in Flash?! SMILEY
Desert of the Real SOE Discussion Soe Launcher going live ? Re:Soe Launcher going live ? Procurator 0 05/07/2008 00:57
I can sort of see where they're coming from by not correlating multiple instances of the same friend. If you initiate a conversion to an in-game friend through their entry under one of your characters, that character will appear to be speaking to the person in-game. Initiate it through your second character and they will talk to your friend. That's kinda neat. It means I can talk to people in-game as both Procurator and my ship's operator (one of my alts). Plus, it looks like the cross-game SOE chat system needs a 'from' character and a 'to' character to send messages, so if you correlated all the friends it would have to pick one of your characters at random to use as the 'from' character, which would be weird.

Having said that, of course, the execution still sucks. They should correlate the friends in the list, but let you choose a character to speak from when you initiate a conversation. Neater, cleaner, more efficient. More intelligent. >_>

And the appearance of dead characters is really annoying. I know they keep the names attached to players' accounts, but there's obviously a flag on each character that tells the game they belong to whether they're an active character or not. Use that to work out whether or not to add them to the list! It should have been one of the first things they programmed.

I don't know how the lists of actions are constructed, but by the looks of things both NPCs and players share the same system, so making Details the default for one makes it default for the other. SMILEY Hopefully they are constructed differently, in which case they should be able to change the NPCs' menu. I doubt it, though, as I don't think they'd've consciously made the choice to have NPCs show the details panel by default.

For someone like me who logs everything (and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in that SMILEY), that'd be a log file for every time I jack in, which is a scary prospect. People can divide log files up themselves with a bit of pattern matching. Personally I have a log file for every month, weighing in at about 3MiB each. That's not too bad to do oneself.

We won't get rolls, because that would break combat. We'd be able to calculate an opponent's defense points, and use that to our advantage. As it stands, showing the accuracy bonuses only helps people who couldn't be bothered to work it out themselves - as task which was certainly possible.
