Community General Discussion The need for a fixed/overhauled Rep System. The need for a fixed/overhauled Rep System. cloudwolf 0 08/16/2006 06:37

Well since it seems to be a particularly popular complaint lately, what with the upcoming org abilities and all, i thought i'd make a thread on it.

Now, thanks to our lack of SOE support the current dev team can't really afford to create or even modify any of the existing systems since, well, they either don't know how to use em, change em or improve on em. This lack of knowledge/support means they're generally too scared to change anything that needs changing ( e.g Clearing the database ) so don't expect any ideas you present to be taken notice of anytime soon...

Unless we make ourselves heard loud enough.

And if there really is nothing they can do then maybe, just maybe, this thread can be looked upon in the future when we do have the resources we so desperately need.

So... what do you think is wrong with the current rep system and how would you propose it be fixed?

My basic critisisms: Rep is farrrrrrr too stupidly hard to gain at higher level and it shouldnt be just limited to mission grinding either ( Note HCfrog, before he was taken from us, was looking into ways of having rep gained through pvp. He was also looking into player chevrons based on rep. If only he were still here... )

Community General Discussion When oh when will it end? When oh when will it end? cloudwolf 0 08/17/2006 03:05

Well to fit in nicely with my latest 'MxO is going nowhere, the devs can do nothing because SOE refuses to give us the resources we so desperately need' depression i thought i'd make a thread on the topic.

When i ask, when do you think, if ever, this will end?

When will we actually get at least some of what we deserve?

When will this 6 week 'we cant this, we cant do that' schedule BS stop?!

Just everytime Rarebit says 'impossible' to an idea my faith dies a little inside...

P.S Due to our shoddy forums this thread took half an hour to post.

Community General Discussion Mission NPC Level Scaling. Your Thoughts. Mission NPC Level Scaling. Your Thoughts. cloudwolf 0 08/29/2006 18:42

After having a lil discussion with some faction mates the other night i thought i'd make a thread on the matter.

The system where Mission NPC level is based on an average (i think) of team member levels.

Good or Bad?

I personally think its bad and should be removed. Example: it completely ruins missioning when a higher level helps a newbie/lower level because A) The NPCs are made too strong for the newbie, making them techicually pointless as well as actually feeling pointless. Which is never good. B) The NPCs are made too weak for the higher level to have any sort of challenge and/or gain decent combat EXP and/or loot.

Lose/Lose

I think just having the entire mission scale to mission leader level would be at least somewhat better as the team could choose which scenario they wanted. Either the npcs at the lowbies level, making the lowbie useful in combat and the high level there as they're intended, as backup. Or the npcs at the highers level so the lowbie can tag along doign nothing of his own will to get better EXP while the higher level actually gets something out of it.

Win/Win.

Thoughts?

Community General Discussion The reloaded hallway and the MxO hallways. The same? The reloaded hallway and the MxO hallways. The same? cloudwolf 0 09/02/2006 05:29

Well, since it certainly seems open to debate, i thought a thread for the discussion of the white halls from a story perspective would be nice.

Personally i believe the white halls we now have access too are not, and were intended to be, the same white hallway system the movie characters had access to.

That hall provided direct access to innumerable different places/locations, as far as we know, inside the simulation.

While these halls contain rooms which download/upload the person's data to different locations, as far as we know, outside the simulation.

I think it's perfectly feasible that two different white hall systems would've been needed for the difference in inter-system movement and outer-system movement.

You thoughts?

Community General Discussion The CloudWolf Development News Mega Catch Up! The CloudWolf Development News Mega Catch Up! cloudwolf 0 09/13/2006 11:55

Repost from TheX.fm News -here-

THE CLOUDWOLF DEVELOPMENT NEWS MEGA CATCH UP!

Hello there again everyone! Well, it's been a little while since I've made a news report over here and I think it's about time I get everyone up to date! (and try my hardest not to get left behind again too ¬.¬SMILEY

OK, here goes, my list of all upcoming game developments we are currently aware of... I think.

- The Loadout Scanner - An item, the now no longer working on MxO dev, HCfrog was working on, this item would scan a targeted player for any loaded buffs. Its use was intended for player tournaments to ensure fairness. It was also PvP fail safed by the use timer and need for the target to be seated. The current status of the item is unknown, although we were told it had entered testing and the item's description text did enter the live game via a bug with the temporary 3.3 archive completion token.

- Organisation Specific Abilities - According to rarebit currently undergoing re-evaluation and design. Don't go expecting these anytime soon.

- Ongoing ‘Quest-Like' Gameplay Paths - The latest Zero One content introduced in update 46 being the first Rarebit is looking to add to the game's static content via a series of quest-like gameplay activities with the use of collectors, contacts and golden ticket missions. The rumoured/hinted at possibilities include the use of boos style characters and clothing ‘sets' that give extra buffs when worn together.

- Collector System Changes - Rarebit is going to be undergoing work on the collector system, converting all normal city collectors to the Binary Boy system. That is, being able to trade in gang tokens for either their individual collector's item or a level appropriate XP and/or Info reward.

- Org Specific Area Changes - With the shear level of player feedback since their recent addition to the game Rarebit plans to work on improving on the Org Specfic Areas accessible via the White Hallway system. His improvements will include adding org specific music tracks to each area (Zion's being the rarely used Niobe mission music I might add), adding org representative NPCs to the areas' lobby rooms and, most interestingly, a spawn-able boss system. This means the areas will have org specific ‘trainer' simulacrums which will be able to spawn a, from a choice of 3, level 70, yes 70, org specific boss character.

The current plans are shaping up to be:

Zion Trainer - Link

Merv Trainer - The Merovingian

Machine Trainer - Agent Pace

Zion Bosses - The Assassin, Sleepwalker NPC, Veil.

Merv Bosses - Morpheus, Niobe, Ghost.

Machine Bosses - Single Merv Twin, TheKid, N30 Agent NPC.

Exciting stuff since it allows players to see characters which have since left, or never actually be able to be, in the game's storyline. Plus they'll apparently some nice loot.

- Assassin Hint - Rarebit was once quoted to saying players would be able to ‘Fight The Assassin without bugspray', while this is going to be possible in the covered above Org Area additions this was not their original design and this quote was taken quite a time ago. Thus there may well be something else involving old toilet face in the works.

- Agent Gun Change - Agents of the system will soon be equipped with, based on player feedback, a single custom textured black desert eagle. Just like in the movies and all other canon! This new weapon is called the ‘System FM-1500 Magnum' and will have a base DPS value of 15 and not 150 or 1500 as some previously believed. It is indeed a possibility this item may be acquirable by players in some form but no plans have been announced/planned so far so don't go getting ya hopes up.

Oh and since theres a lot of writing in this article heres a puppy:

- Gun Polish Pass - While creating the aforementioned FM-1500 Rarebit apparently discovered that the game's weapons are actually capable of supporting both Specular Mapping and Bump Mapping (much like many of the game's clothing items). As such he plans to go through the items in a ‘polish' pass adding said effects to the game's weapon textures. This will give the weapons a new level of realism and overall just add to the game's already impressive graphical scene.

Unlimit Spawn Changes - With update 47 the Downtown Unlimit NPC spawns should start dropping some more worth while loot.

- Unique Items - Rarebit has also expressed a desire to add to, especially since his creation of the FM-1500, the game's uniquely textured/modelled items.

And err... That's about it off the top of me head. Hope you're all looking forward to the upcoming additions/improvements to The Matrix Online!

Note: All the above featured changes/improvements are still in development and fully open to change.

As a side note, some of you may know me through my work on documenting the Matrix Online storyline via a little thing I like to call the CloudWolf Storyline Document.

Well I thought here would be as good a place as any to say regular work on said document has recently drastically declined and, as of the last week or so, actually completely stopped. I just want to make it clear - this doesn't mean it's getting discontinued; it just means no one should expect any Release 2 versions anytime soon.

Sorry guys but the education system can be one heck of a time consumer.

Besides, it's nice to actually play the game for entertainment as opposed to ‘work' again, lol.

-CloudWolf

Thought i'd post here in case anyone wants to discuss the article, the upcoming changes or indeed add to the list in case i missed anything.

Community General Discussion Secondry Mission Music Tracks. Used? Secondry Mission Music Tracks. Used? cloudwolf 0 09/30/2006 08:46

Just been listening through my MxO soundtrack folder and realised something. Something horrible. Something wrong. Something evvvviiillll.

The awesome-ness of the secondry mission music tracks (as in the more dramatic, tense, heart pumping and overall much better than the primary ones) can't be heard, to my knowledge, anywhere in game.

I was just wondering, is this indeed the case? Anyone heard em used ingame?

If not, dear lord they should be.

Although i'd say only for something special, the dramatic style would have to be accomanied by something equally awesome. Like some sort of important questline with a big ol boss or something.

And for anyone who doesnt know what the hell im on about...

Zion Secondry
Merv Secondry
Mach Secondry
Neutral Secondry
Niobe Primary
Niobe  Secondry

EDIT: Oh brainstorm. These could be used for critical missions while the primaries can be used for standard and archived missions. The neutral secondry track could be used for pandoras box while the primary is still used for neighbourhood contacts. And niobe... err... that can go somewhere else SMILEY

EDIT2: Oh and before anyone comes up with rarebit's lil tidbit of times past about music being hard coded in with controllers keep in mind rare must've added new controllers for the mission archive ([archived] and neutral music tracks) so in theory he could just make another set of new ones for seperating criticals from standards.

Community General Discussion 'World Events' Button Suggestion. 'World Events' Button Suggestion. cloudwolf 0 10/06/2006 16:38

Right, this is inspired from a realisation/thought i had earlier today after running the newest zion critical mission...

The 'world events' button in the options menu. Currently useless. Full of potential. Now, we know Rarebit has wanted it to point to the live events forum themselves for a long time. We know this would be a 'cheap hack'. What we dont know is if he'd have use for the live events pop up icon and the possibilities it provides.

What i thought of is a system whereby the live events write ups are sent to, as well as our own discussion forums, a dedicated webspace or a hidden and locked forum area. Whenever a new one is posted, preferablely somehow storing information from the user's last log in, the live events icon would flash on screen informing the player something has happened since the last time they logged in.

Think about it. You watch the latest cinematic and you do the latest critical mission. You get nothing 'handed to you' until the next week. Now, we know other story events happen outside these. We know the story is presented in other ways. What we also know is that without checking these forums regulary or having contacts in-game you wouldn't know they even happened. You wouldnt experience or know about what happened in those other facets of story. You wouldn't know the constant stream of live event story content rarebit pumps out for us.

With my system a user can log in the day after running that critical, see something has happened, read up on it, know they're being given constant live story (which they are), feel a greater part of the story and go about their merry way.

I mean, the 'we are getting bored' thread was obviously built upon not knowing about what is actual going on. It is in fact very hard for the average joe player to know whats going on around them and how they all relate. They begin to think theres nothing happening. They get bored. They leave.

Sorry, i just had to post, because the more i think about the more i really believe this would do the game no end of good. It doesn't even seem like it would be that much work.

So, what ya'll think?

Community General Discussion DN1 - Whats new in update 2.0?! DN1 - Whats new in update 2.0?! cloudwolf 0 10/13/2006 03:32

Well i'm sure all of you have seen the linked image for 'whats new in update 2.0' on DN1 by now. After all, it's been there from the start of DN1 2.0.

What this thread is here to do is try and get some attention around the fact said image is misleading, misinformed, useless and should be changed/removed.

First off it did actually link to a page describing CR2.0, it no longer does. And even if it did the title of 'update 2.0' is completely incorrect and misleads as to the number of updates the game has recieved (we're actually on update 47, not 2 weirdly enough)

What i propose is the image, or at very least the text, be changed to reflect whatever current patch notes are released and the link updated to said patch notes.

Whos with me?

Anyone else get a lagged out flickery 1fps game when using the ingame web brower (and thus ingame support now)?

Anyone know how to fix/improve it?

If not i think it could be a serious problem, expecially with support using it now. It could need a serious looking at for performance issues.

Oh and also, in case no ones noticed, when you use /bug it opens up the old support system with dead end buttons and tabs everywhere. Even if bug is still using the old method (which to my understanding it is) the rest of the old support system should be removed from it.

Since my concern and suggestions have already been made in the ask a dev (listen to me about putting the tracking abilities on DM draco and rare you mad men!) i'll simply comment on the athestics.

1. That big ol line going down like that just looks silly, have it going to the side or move the awakened tree around a bit so it doesnt look so craaaazy.

2. Where DM used to split off the arrow positioning still looks like it should be there.

3. The 'overview' image will needa updatin.

Community General Discussion 'mind numbingly repetitive' ? 'mind numbingly repetitive' ? cloudwolf 0 01/08/2007 12:37

A piece of a post i recently made elsewhere and i thought what the hell, i'll post it over at DN1 SMILEY

Thought it deserved its own thread since its a commonly brought up issue.

On the subject of 'mind numbingly repetitive' a popular phrase comes to mind, "what you put in is what you get out". That is to say if one grinds on the same thing ( in this case standard randomly generated missions ) then they obviously will gain an experience which is 'mind numbingly boring'.

The thing to remember is there are other things to do, other choices available to break up the monotony.

Ran a few standard missions and are starting to feel bored? Then go check out that exile hideout over there, fight the boss and see if the loots good for your class, it is? Then stay around killing mobs for some xp/info and wait for the boss to respawn, try to get the highest level item from there.

That's the monotony broken.

Don't feel like doing more of the same again? Then go do some contact missions in the neighborhood at your current level (for fairly level appropriate xp and individual 'side questy' storylines) or go progress with those archive missions (which tell the story of the game so far giving pretty decent xp and, imo, are far more interesting and involving than standards).

That's the monotony broken.

There's tons of stuff to break up the grind, join a faction and have some good times with them (missioning with mates helps battle the grind so much in my experience), progress into other districts by hunting access codes, have a look at local collectors and see if the loots any good for you, if it is then go farm the mobs for a bit, check out the special loot available in your level range's construct and if its good for ya work at that.

My single greatest piece of advice to anyone thinking of, or is, playing MxO is take things slow and enjoy the content around you. Don't rush to level and grind on standard missions - you'll 'burn out' before ya know it and never appreciate what else was there.

Right, so just to throw this out there to soe/devs. And yes i know it says 'not all may have ...' but still.

1. MxO has no /feedback

2. MxO's /report merely links to the support site rather than using the actual game reporting system which, as the article says, should then be followed up by a support.

3. MxO has no /petition - instead we have /ccr - doesn't make much sense in this nice 'universal' they got going.

4. MxO's /BUG SUCKS. I mean seriously, take a look at it. Full of outdated and incompatible crud. Knowledge Base thats full of html coding cos it it's only supposed to be in /petition afterall. Not that we have /petition. Instructions on how to submit a proper bug report that are firstly completed skipped and secondly, when are found/viewed link to the manual - i mean w.t.f. Then theres the bugging itself, still filled with CS topics and drop downs.

/bug should open a single non tabby window that instructs how to sumbit a proper bug report and link to actually submitting, this also non tabby submission window should only have the relevant bug categories and not CS stuff. Simple as.

--Live Event Recaps

1st, i personally prefer the old live event recap structure - that is a big image first to show off some of the game's awesome visuals (maybe in that cool border?) and the old 'event title with an underneath link' style too. Would love to see that back. And even if it isn't at least underline the links so it's clear they are in fact links and not just white text SMILEY

2nd,We also don't really need the chapter tags any more since the article is only meant to be covering a single sub-subchpter anyway SMILEY

3rd, i like how the live events are going to be done on thursday, makes sense considering thats the day we move forward in the subchapter. Means we can recap the events that happened leading up to the new crit. Now to catch up so it's nice and timely again.

4th, Make the events go in decending chronological order, only makes logical sense. for example, in the current article, Veils event is listed before Cryptos' when it directly relates to the repurcussions of Cryptos'.

5th, i'm undecided on the whole transmission style, i mean, its nice and mxo-y but at the same time it makes the title of the article hidden and less noticable and kinda feels a little cheap to me. But like i said, undecided. Maybe just make the title a little bigger and bold.

6th, since it looks to be returning as a seperate article maybe the event recaps can have a seperate name from community uplink - like... err... Briefing File or Comms Chatter.

7th, FIX THE FORMATTING. That is to say the article is only using half the page, see how it cuts off the Malphas event title? And the big empty spaces like under the links? Nasty. SMILEY

--Player Event Annoucements

I was first going to suggest linking the images to their respective threads, since it needs some sort fo linkage, but since not all events are going to have images might i suggest simply having a link based articles with links nicely underneath any images.

It is the presence of a continuing storyline that is one of the most attractive features of the game. And yet, ironically it is also its greatest weak spot. However, it is not the storyline itself that weakens the game but rather a lack of decent coverage of the storyline. Historically, there has not been a consistent manner in which a running tab has been kept on all the events that go on in the game. For the average new player who joins at this stage of the game where there has been two years' worth of storyline, it would be very confusing to try to figure out how everything has progressed since the game first went online.

Now to be fair, it is not as if no efforts whatsoever have been made. In fact, the exact opposite is true. When the game began, there were very lengthy summaries of each event, along with helpful pictures. However, these summaries soon disappeared, and the average player was left only with the cinematics and the postings of fellow gamers on the forums. In the absence of good reporting, some loyal players took it upon themselves to begin writing their own summaries of the game's storyline. But even this was limited, sporadic and dependant upon the players to continue the coverage.

Eventually, the developers resorted to posting screenshots on the Live Events section of the game's official forum of the various in-game visitations by major characters. And while this was a step in the right direction compared with having nothing at all, it is still woefully inadequate. The basic problem is that all the existing methods of reporting the storyline are cumbersome for the new player who wants to catch up on the entire story thus far. The Live Event coverage on the forum is very thorough, but it is mostly helpful for existing players who are already caught up with the story. New players have to wade through a sea of forum postings and screenshots, as well as try to sort out the correct chronological order of each thread in conjunction with the others. Because anyone can respond to these forum postings at any time, they are prone to getting out of order very quickly.

A major overhaul of the method for reporting the storyline is necessary in order to ensure that new players have a sure footing when joining the game. As it stands right now, the current story tracking methods are only truly helpful for recurring players who basically have been around since the game began. These players already know the back-story and only need to check in on the Live Events forum sporadically in order to keep abreast of the current goings-on. If a more ideal method is to be implemented, it must be beneficial not only for recurring players but new ones as well. The storyline should be presented in a chronological manner so that new players do not have to spend any time trying to sort it out themselves. The easier it is for players to keep track of the story, the easier it is to keep existing players on the same page while also making sure that potential new players are not intimidated and are able to join in on the current storyline with little effort.

The best way to manage all of this is to have a specific framework that can be used on an ongoing basis. If the story is reported as the game goes along, the workload is not much heavier than it already is. Once the structure is in place, all that's left to do is fill in the blanks of the continuing storyline as events occur. However, the difficult part about beginning this process is the fact that there is two years' worth of back-story that will also need to be summarized. But the work will be very much worthwhile, especially as time goes on. Over time the story is just going to get longer and more complex, and without a concrete method of reporting it for new players, soon there won't be any new players who will want to join. In other words, the sooner this new method is put into place, the better.

There are several strategies that can be employed to meet this goal. First and foremost, there needs to be a central location on the game's official website where all players can go to see the storyline at a glance-like a "story thus far" type of section. This feature should be available not just to the existing players but also to potential players who are not currently paying customers. The main focus would be on eliminating any daunting roadblocks for anyone who thinks it's too late for them to join in on the action. This will be more and more important as time goes on and the story gets longer and longer. The more inviting the game can be made to the non-player, the better the odds that they'll want to play the game.

The synopsis of the story needs to be organized and practical. There should be an overall "Big Picture" view of the entire story from day one until the current point in time. This will provide a quick review for new players and it will also help to illustrate how all the various chapters and subchapters fit together. Basically, it would be an ever-increasing summary, which would grow in size each time a subchapter is implemented. Screenshots would be ideal, as well as the occasional video. The basic idea is that this would be the place where new players would go to get a rundown of all the important events that have taken place prior to the time that they joined the game. Keep in mind that this would be like a Cliff's Notes summary and would not include a description of every instance of the Oracle showing up in-game to hand out cookies. Only major items that affect the overall storyline should be included. For more detail, links to the Live Event forum postings can be included.

The storyline summary can be in the format of an indented outline, as follows:

I. Chapter 1
a. Subchapter 1.1
b. Subchapter 1.2
c. Subchapter 1.3
II. Chapter 2
a. Subchapter 2.1
b. Subchapter 2.2
c. Subchapter 2.3

This format would continuously expand as time goes on and more subchapters are added. Special Anniversary Events, such as Piece of Blue Sky or the Smith Virus, would also be included in their proper chronological placement. Each line, whether it's a chapter or subchapter, would be a link that takes you to another page. If you click on a chapter link, it takes you to a page that provides a summary of the entire chapter, including all three subchapters. If you click on a subchapter link, it takes you to a page that provides a summary of only that subchapter. The subchapter summaries will be more in-depth than the chapter summaries.

The subchapter summary pages will be the meat and potatoes of the storyline summary. This is where you will find the corresponding Sentinel newspaper, cinematic and storyline summary. You will also find links to the Live Event postings on the forum in chronological order and embedded in the text summary of the subchapter at the point in the summary where that particular Live Event took place. That way, the subchapter summary can devote one sentence to a Live Event ("The Oracle shows up to hand out cookies."SMILEY, with that sentence being a clickable link to the Live Event forum posting illustrating the whole thing. Players who read the summary can either continue reading the summary or click on the link to get more info from the Live Event forum posting. This will also eliminate the problem of Live Event forum postings being out of chronological order due to reply postings by players. They will always be in the correct order in the summary.

Whenever a character makes his or her first appearance in the storyline, there should be a picture of that character in the corresponding subchapter summary in which he or she first appeared. This also helps to ensure that the storyline is clear and alerts new players who to look for in-game if they happen to see one of them during a Live Event. Names are extremely helpful, but in a visual medium like an online video game, a picture is definitely worth a thousand words. Including links to the Live Event forum postings can take the place of including pictures in the summaries, but there should be an effort to include pictures in the summaries whenever possible. As an aside, it might be helpful to also include dates for Live Events in the story summaries. While it might be difficult to catalog by date the past Live Events that have already occurred, it should not be a problem to do so on an ongoing basis once this new process has been implemented.

That and my personal pet peeve, the ever repulsive "update 2.0" image. Just blummin well change it to the current number (52) and link it to the patch notes already xD

Community General Discussion How to you feel about the fall of The General? How to you feel about the fall of The General? cloudwolf 0 07/02/2007 05:17

It was just something that popped into my head about how The General's been handled the last couple of subchapters.

What started out as THE bad guy, the 'biggest threat to zion since the war', the one who had been behind pretty much all the troubles inside the Matrix, the arch villain of the pre-written storyline kinda lost all his standing in a long drawn out crippling defeat.

Personally i think it was quite a sad way to handle the character. I mean, yes he was obviously gonna be defeated but for such a build up it was far too easy and one sided. He had absolutely no up points after the peak of 6.3. His access points, his choppers, his stealth, his communications were all getting pwnd by the Machines. He was getting pushed into a deadly corner with the Merv, having to rely upon him more and more. Zion were off kicking *CENSORED* with uber Seraph. Then he was utterly destroyed in the real and made to take a final weak escape straight into the clutches and direct control of the Frenchman.

I dunno, like i said, i just feel it was too one sided and not in tune with the seriousness his character was handled in the past.

I cant speak for everyone but after the big foreboding 'i'm bringing this house of cards down' speech and first appearence of the eilite commandos in 6.2 i was ready for a difficult struggle to save the Matrix. Instead everything about that got devaluated far too quickly. Especially the elites who just got used as 'normal enemies'. I say there shouldnt have been any 1 or 2 chev versions of them and they'd act as the 'leaders' of the normal commandos. That wouldve kept their integrity as deadly fighters instead of more cannon fodder.

But yeah, just some feedback for the future and points for community discussion. SMILEY
