Syntax World Discussion - Syntax Hey, where are all the roleplayers at? Re: Hey, where are all the roleplayers at? king 0 08/30/2005 12:23

Heh, you probably passed them heading in the other direction on your way from SWG SMILEY

I would suggest checking out places like Tabor West, Dannah Heights etc and just chatting to people, you should be able to pick up pretty quickly whether someone is roleplaying or not.

Also, try to familiarise yourself with the storylines from both the RP threads in this forum and in the Next Renaissance forum. Check out http://www.geocities.com/cm_let./etow.html for one of the recent chapters; Evolution Of The Wicked, and then read 'Of Tourniquets and Demons' in the Next Renaissance forum on these boards.

I'm pretty new to the whole RP scene too and only started trying to get involved following the server merge, and its worked for me.

Good luck and have fun

No worries DM - I didn't take it personally in any way, and never for one second thought you were directing it at me, seeing as how my character is still, for all intents and purposes, dead.

However it is a subject that i'd love to see further discussion of - both regarding death in RP as well as the logistical arguement of whether death in the Matrix is something which should exist.

Community Redpill Rescue Mission Difficulty Re: Mission Difficulty king 0 09/11/2005 06:48

As well as this, you need to bear in mind that Easy = mobs one level below you, Medium = mobs at your level, Hard = Mobs one level above you.

Avoiding Westview missions and ones in Richland with mobs higher than you is tricky business - main tips would be, to avoid the mobs, try to stick to the main roads, stay in the centre of them to give you a better chance of not catching the eye of nearby NPCs - if that does happen, it gives you that extra distance to run like hell - Hypersprint/speed is your friend in these circumstances!

Also, try to avoid escort missions whenever possible and stick with ones which confine your activities and objectives to the mission building.

Scouting the server forums for factions who are recruiting can help you hook up with a strong crew who will more often than not be happy to help you, either by giving you advice or by grouping with you to complete missions.

Syntax World Discussion - Syntax Message OOC to all Re: Message OOC to all king 0 08/31/2005 07:56

Thats the one major gripe that I do agree with, and can understand why hardcore fans of SWG or people who play for RP/storied reasons would get a little ticked off...

However i've never been the biggest of Star Wars fans; yes I do enjoy the films, quite a lot actually, but up until now thats where it stopped (Except from the limited edition golden Star Wars NES game I owned about 15 year ago...)

Whats compelling me to play SWG more than MxO is the unbeleivably immense level of content and the insane vastity of everything.  It just seems to have those shiny bells and whistles that MxO is lacking...

I am more than aware that no matter what game you play, there will always be a point when you grow bored of it.  With a MMO there is the tendancy to try and battle that boredom for the sake of remaining a part of the community you have grown to know during your gaming time.  Through stretching out your inane frustration with the game, you then grow to despise so much more about it... I've seen threads by people leaving MxO that are exactly the same as some of those leaving SWG.

However as of yet, i'm balancing the two.  I'm fortunate to have quite a bit of spare time on my hands as I managed to save and take a sizeable career break - So I can spread my time between the two games... right now, the complete lack of content and the simmering down of RP caused largely by time zone issues means I have spent a lot of this week in SWG.  The tide may very well swing and I could spend most of next week in MxO, especially if Pandora's Box makes its appearance on Friday.

One thing I can say about SWG is that it makes you realise how inept MxO is in terms of features... if SOE can implement even a small portion of SWG's features into the Matrix, then I would officially dedicate my life to the game and change my religion to Syntaxian... ok maybe not that far but you get the drift.

Heres hoping

Community Redpill Rescue Editing your bio/background Re: Editing your bio/background king 0 09/12/2005 04:34

Yeah i'm hoping for some sort of Bio Reconfig Hack, similair to what we had to reset our attributes... I don't think we should go so far as having it constantly editable in the way that it is with SWG, simply because we'd have people constantly messing about with it and spamming Mara C with

"d00d Luk @ Ma Profil - iT SeZ tat I pwnT j00 aWL"

Perhaps allowing us one edit space per month or something like that would be better.

Syntax World Discussion - Syntax Message OOC to all Re: Message OOC to all king 0 08/31/2005 11:13

This is more directed towards Dare regarding my experience as a complete 'noob' to SWG.  I too play MxO because I'm a Matrix fan, not an MMO fan, and as its my first ever MMO I never really had anything to compare it to other than console games...

Its difficult to compare MxO to SWG... everything in SWG seems so much... richer...

You have 11 (could be wrong on that one) planets to explore, each with vast terrains and environment that completely blow the linear constraints of the Megacity out of the water.  Yes you do have transportation, which is a step up on MxO - obviously speeders etc would look out of place, but comparitavely player controlled cars, motorcycles etc wouldn't.

The "grind" is so different... In MxO, you kill a NPC, you get XP, that adds to your XP meter, once that fills, you go up and level and rinse, wash and repeat.

Basic example of the SWG "grind" as I've experienced it these last few days...

You're wandering outside of Mos Eisley and spot a Womprat scuttling around, so you pull out your rifle and shoot it to hell, it puts up a struggle and you have to quickly try and heal yourself mid-combat... eventually you beat it down.  You then harvest the bones from the corpse.

As you walk away, you notice a suspicious pile of garbage... So you shoot at it just in case.. Suddenly a swarm of Womprats attack you... you manage to fend them off, and harvest their hides and also the bones of a few of them.

You're battle weary, so you walk further into the distance and decide you need a rest.  So you use the bones and animal hides to build yourself a camp.  You notice you have a few injuries, so call on one of your medic buddies to come and treat you.  While you are there you decide to play him a little music on your Slitherhorn as a 'thank you'... by playing, you gradually build up an 'Inspiration boost' which adds 10% success rate to various statistics.. by listening to you, your medic buddy also earns this boost...

During the course of this, your character has earnt Rifle Weapons Experience, Combat Experiance, Medic Experience, Scouting Experience and Entertainer experience.  These all contribute to different potential professions that you could choose to follow... whether you want to be a Master Scout, and Entertainer, a Bounty Hunter, Rifleman or a Combat Medic, everything you have done during that little episode has given you a little nudge forward towards your future career.

You may decide to veer off those tracks and become an Architect, maybe build your own house, your own weapons, your own starships... start your own city, become Mayor, become a politician...

This may or may not be a good example of how wide the game spreads, but to me, it sure as hell beats having one generic XP guage, and makes things seem less repetative.

MxO is at a standstill right now and has been for a while.  I'm not leaving it, simply because I still have high hopes for the game and especially seeing what SOE are capable of with SWG I am even more enthused for the potential that MxO holds... however

I am not a star wars fan... I like the movies, but nowhere near the degree of how much I love the Matrix. I have always spent a lot of time in MxO - extremely lengthy periods of time where I am pretty much doing nothing other than socialising and taking part in the odd spot of RP.  Perhaps if I could only play for an hour or two a day then the inane boredom that comes with having zero actual gaming content wouldn't be so apparent.

Yes, the players are meant to make the most of the situation, however all the work should not be down to us.  The things that players do within the Matrix to maximise their gaming experience should be an addition, not a necessity.  At the minute it is tantamount of paying to enter an empty swimming pool and being made to fill it with water ourselves.

There will be more added to MxO, without question, and at that time, I will be spending most of my hours playing it... however I now know that as soon as I get bored, I can return to something that so far is satisfying my gaming needs.  Will I get bored of SWG? More than likely... thats the nature of gaming... however right now, my MxO shelflife has probably been extended by SWG rather than inhibited by it.

Syntax World Discussion - Syntax Stuck with new Crit Mission Package Re: Stuck with new Crit Mission Package king 0 09/03/2005 10:56

Yup, I second that Gami, HL jumping and dropped mission team generally tends to get around having to do standard missions between your crits.

Also, each area of the Megacity has a limited amount of mission 'spaces'.  SInce some of the crits require specific location types, these spaces are reduced...so it will be more difficult to have them appear frequently somewhere like Mara C than it would be for a desolted part of Downtown.

After doing the first critical, I ran the rest of mine in Lamar

The Lounge Next Renaissance Split Infinity Radio Presents: The BBQ Challenge Split Infinity Radio Presents: The BBQ Challenge king 0 12/02/2005 08:56

The Concept

Split Infinity Radio are looking to produce a series of radio-based 'skits' - featuring some of the most common and blatant stereotypes of the gaming world.

The Challenge

Where better to go for input into this project than the most proven creative people of this community - the roleplayers!  We are challenging YOU to come up with a short, humorous and witty script to kick-start this series of skits.

The Rewards

Not only will you have the honour of your script being turned into a fully fleshed voice-acted skit, but there is also $i30million up for grabs to whoever is judged by the SI team as providing the most creative and unique scripts.

The Rules

The skits should be no more than 3-5 minutes in length, so bear that in mind when writing your script.

The characters should be recognisable stereotypes from the gaming world, for example, the all-too common "Uber-L337 pWNzR"-type player.  It will be down to you to provide names and a description of each of your characters - and we would ask that you limit the 'cast' to 5 main characters.

No over-the-top profanity.  While we are fairly liberal and don't mind the use of "bad" language - theres a point when it becomes unfunny.  Also, there should be absolutely nothing majorly offensive, as in racist comments.

All submissions should be posted in this thread - this contest is open to all MxO servers, and there is no limit to the number of submissions made.

If anyone has any questions or needs clarification on any points made here, then please ask in this thread.

Have fun!

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES: FRIDAY 16TH DECEMBER

"Don't beleive everything you read in the papers son..."

I remember my father telling me that every time we passed the newstand, headlines screaming tales of war and devastation, of scandal and outrage...

I've done my best to maintain that ideal throughout both my life lived in dreams and the one I awoke to, however I cannot escape the nagging feeling... there is no smoke without fire, and the media sure provide a lot of smoke...

My curiosity is awoken once more as my eyes scan across the cover of a magazine... the same glossy trash I was forever warned against perusing... I reach out and take the second copy from the top, so as not to be plagued by waterlogged pages...

After tossing the newsagent a crumbled note, I slump into the adjacent bench, and allow my thoughts to focus once more at the latest headlines leaping off the magazine...

This is the prelude to an upcoming player event on the Syntax server, which will commence from Monday 31st October. A seperate thread has been created in the Next Renassance forum for all who wish to be involved to Roleplay an introduction to their own individual or group interests, motivations etc towards the subject matter provided by this prelude.  That thread can be found HERE

The Lounge Next Renaissance Things that inspired your character's role in the MxO. Re: Things that inspired your character's role in the MxO. king 0 12/27/2005 08:29

Almost all of my character development and roleplaying was and as impromptu, on-the-fly stuff - and while it might show smatterings of various influences - none of them are deliberate!

If anything, it began as an extension of myself and what I beleived I would do given the situation my character was in, in terms of my faction (which was, at the time, supposedly an information-trafficking business), and with the server merge just having took place, I followed a route that allowed me to sit back, listen to convos and learn the characters - because IC, thats exactly what I was doing - researching the new additions to my world.

I was lucky enough to actually have laid some RP backstory prior to the server merge, and long before I was a roleplayer - simply for use in a player event I organised.  After digging that up, I settled on a concept that would shape the rest of my character development - which was simply "what happens when an ordinary mind is exposed to an extraordinary world?" - in that my character should never have been given the redpill as his mind did not have the capacity to handle the true reality.  Following that, I just focused on really dissecting the inner workings of his psyche and exploring as many facets of his gradually decreasing sanity as I could.

The only real influence that I know to have crossed paths with my character is, embarrassingly, Buffy The Vampire Slayer ... :smileyindifferent: However, I had developed that specific side of my character before I realised something similar had taken place in Buffy, and only learned of that when I let my fiancee read my RP stories.

Syntax World Discussion - Syntax A few questions: Re: A few questions: king 0 09/11/2005 06:38

What time do the RPers meet up at The Sphinx? I went there last night around 11 gmt and the place was empty...

From what I gather, most people that meet up there are on US time, so for me here in the UK, its the early hours of the morning - i've been there at 4am GMT before when its been quite busy.  Ask around a few of the roleplays, keep your eyes on where the 'Club Critic' is next going to be based - i'm sure you'll find a strong RP party.

Why are people meeting up at The Shpinx when The Sanguine looks exactly the same with easier access for more people?

Sanguine is pretty much in the same vain as Polyvinyl, in that its a common place for people to go with parties etc and tend to attract mostly non-RP crowds.

When you take the Red Pill, you don't join the team that rescued you, so aren't on a ship at broadcast depth, so how do you jack into the Matrix?

As far as that goes, its left pretty much unexplained, however I would assume from the vast increase in awakened redpills since the truce that they are immediately placed on Hoverbarges rather than Hovercrafts, and therefore have no crew to speak of.  However for roleplaying purposes its pretty much up to you how you want to cover that aspect.

If I turn up the Pedestrian Traffic on my options, and a friend has it turned down, does he see me jumping over cars that aren't there or is that auto-dodge client side too? What about when I'm dancing with Blue Pills in clubs? Am I the only one that can see her dancing there?

Your friend will not see you jumping or dodging cars, however in clubs, even on the lowest settings, there are always a handful of bluepills dancing, so the likeliness is that you'll both see them.

How does Reputation work? What is the point? Why is it good to have a high reputation, what's the downside of low reputation?

Reputation affects the level of participation you are likely to have with the official storyline, although not to a monumental degree.  Generally a player or faction with higher org reputation will be viewed in a more positive light by the LET when it comes to Live Events.

The main thing is critical missions.  Some critical missions are only accessed once you have a decent reputation level, which is why Mervs can't do Zions missions etc etc - it makes sense in that your organisation wouldn't trust you with such important missions if you hadn't built up your reputation.

It also affects your ability to become a captain and run your own crew, as well as have meetings with important figures in your organisation (although once again, these are available as 'critical missions'.

Because its more likely that events in the future will be driven forward mainly by criticals, then your reputation is probably going to become even more important.

If I work for Merv, may I still go and raid Exile Hideouts?

Yes; not all exiles follow the Merovingian, and some who do, do not necessarily agree with his use of humans to do his bidding - this kind of explains why exile NPCs and mobs still attack Mero operatives.

How do you drop yourself out of the three sides and become neutral?

Its not possible to do this unfortunately.  Even if you balanced out your rep across all three orgs, for PVP you automatically default to Zion unless you have an alternate affiliation.

What is the level range for groups like? Would I (lvl6) still be able to group with a friend who may have raced ahead of me in levels (lvl13) for power leveling? How does the system work here?

Groups can consist of any range of levels you wish, however if you are a level 8 teaming with 4 level 50's, the NPCs on that mission will be roughly lvl 48/49 - and therefore you will have to hide in the elevator for practically ever part.  You must ensure that you at least step into the mission zone, which is indicated by a red area on your map - otherwise you will not achieve xp for that particular section of the mission.

How does the Aggro AI work here? Is the AI litterally just trying to kill the first person it sees?

Pretty much the same as other games, if you are within a certain level range of an NPC, it will attempt to attack you.  They no longer initiate Interlock, however will still use ranged attacks, and in some cases viral attacks.

It is pretty linear in that there is only one type of aggro AI - for example there are no pacifist NPCs who only attack once attacked, and there are no stalker NPCs etc.

How much memory do we get per level?

This varies, but usually only increases by 1-2 memory slots per level

Does the 50pts stat cap include bonuses from buffs and items or should I be aiming for 50 focus?

It doesn't include buffs, however there is a limit to how many bonus attribute points you can have on top of your regular attributes - which is 17.  I would recommend checking out somewhere like mxovault.ign.com for a breakdown of which area's will benefit from certain attributes.

How do you change your bio/description?

Unfortunately this cannot currently be done once you have passed the character creation screen - although fingers crossed it is something they will bring in at a later stage.

I won't say too much about the Effectuator and the Dire Lupines, but they do play a large part in almost all of the Mero crits.  This is the first time they have been introduced to the story.

As for Gargoyle, he is the archive boss for Ashencourte and also Widows Moor.

Syntax World Discussion - Syntax A few questions: Re: A few questions: king 0 09/12/2005 04:25

What happens if we all have different levels of reputation?  Let's say I have a huge reputation with Marvin, and my team has a fella who has negative rep all over the place.  What happens?  Less reward?  No difference becuase it's only the reputation of the leader that matters?

For normal day-to-day playing, this may just mean that you have access to extra criticals, while your friend may not.  He can still run these crits with you while in a mission team as long as you are the leader and have selected that mission.

However, if you're talking about someone in your faction or crew, then there is as overall faction rep.  As far as i'm aware, there's nowhere in game for you to find this out, however its something that the dev and other 'admin' players such as the LET have access to.  Therefore if you have, for example 10 players in your faction; 5 of them have +100 Merv Rep each, the other 5 have -100 Merv rep each, then your total Merv rep is going to be 0 - which would lead to you not attracting much positive attention from the LET should they ever return.

This, of course, is not the only factor the LET would take into account.  For example, if you Roleplay well with LET members, then they could very well take note of you, and converse with you regularly or call upon you to aid them in certain tasks - however if you boast of being their most powerful and loyal servants, then having the reputation to back it up is always a boost.

Well anyone who pulls themselves away from quite a tightly-knit RP community with all of their masses of interwoven storylines to notice a new name trying to get involved, and then takes the time and effort to work with them to bring them into the scene definately scores high in my books.

Even small things, like a PM to praise a well written RP post, a heads-up on current events, invites to RP set-ups and even a little help on character development go a very long way, and are part of the reason why I now feel comfortable within this scene, rather than still feeling like an outsider looking in.

The rest of the reason is, as Espi states, how fantastic the rest of the RP community is.

*wipes a tear from his cheek* heh

As someone who has only recently (since the merger) gotten involved with RP, then I can only agree with the comments made advising you to 'suck it and see' - just test the waters, you'll know soon enough whether the person you are speaking to is a RPers or not.

Or as Gami said, check out the Next Renaissance forum - particularly the 'Tourniquets and Demons' thread - that should give you an idea of who is currently involved in that scene.  Don't be too shy - start small, if theres someone in those threads who has a penchant for partying, then perhaps send them a short, in-character message asking if they know where you can find the bext nightlife - those sort of things.

As long as none is splashed on my jacket i'm not bothered - the dry cleaning bills are mountainous... I'm guessing its not going to be a good idea to wear an all-white outfit...
