Recent Project - Clash of the Eras: Old-school meets Modern Tech.

Story behind it:  Most of you know my desktop has died out.  Be it the processor or Motherboard, I don't know.  So I am taking this chance to have a little fun, and customize the crap out of something.  The following is my monitor, taken apart and slightly modified (The Acer Debossing on the front was removed for a cleaner/crisper look.).

Painted using House Of Color automotive grade paints.  Orion silver metal flake basecoat mixed with the following Kandies: Pagan Gold, Kandy Apple Red, and Lemon yellow.  The clear coat is actually a matte finish, I did a test panel, and felt that the gloss clear would cause too much "pop" from the metal flake and cause eye strain when looking at MxO for hours on end -_- That last part is sad...

Anywho... Pictures

As for Cads, I'll get started this evening.  I'm a little disheartened thanks to a crappy interview today that I had high hopes for.  It appears that the place is one of those "Oh, you get all this training, then you do door to door work!" kinda things, if even that...

True flame paint job, with a custom front bezel.  It's gonna be brushed aluminum but I'm having an issue designing that part, so that I maintain airflow through the tower.  I have the sides sanded down, ready for the basecoat of black.  That part will probally call for some step-by-step pics.

You can throw up countless examples of better art. I'm not looking for a better example of mapping, a better texture, a better model, a better script, a better anything. I want to see someone do all the numerous different things Rarebit's done - in a 40 hour working week, with his qualifications and experience - irrespective of quality (but within reason).

Can anyone do more than that? You seem to think it's possible. Heck, you seem to think he should have been able to rewrite the game from scratch for this update.

What Mapping, Texture, and Models has Rarebit done?  (Oligarch's are just naked skinned wireframes with 60% white overlay it would seem.  So no, they are not a new model, or even a texture, nor a mapping.)

And I have provided a NEW Texture in 5 min, and better Artwork with my sig.  I guess that doesn't qualify now... Does it?

GEH! I'm done.  I've proven it, and made it avalible to show.

I didn't say that you could make 3D stuff and I wasn't saying it specifically to just yourself. I'd like to see anyone's potential texture/items. But if you or anyone else can make a texture then apply it to a screenshot of an item, thats the kind of stuff I'd like to see. Of course any textures would ideally have to be of the right criteria for MxO textures but I have no idea what they would be.

To clarify the criteria for you (And I know what you're saying SMILEY Just clarifying my end) it needs to fit the Cyber-Punk style, and be a file compatible with the rendering engine for the game.  That being said, It would be my understanding that any 3D skin with the right filename (For association) and .Abrevation would be able to do it just right.

Or someone who has MAYA or 3DMAX would be able to use any .PSD file I believe.

Then there is the choice of taking the 3D wrap right into photoshop and editing it there (Avalible since CS3 Extended)

Yeah, thats kind of what I meant, but can you apply that to an image of an in game item? As I said, I'm interested to see the results, I'm not testing anyones claims

If you can find me a mapped 3D file compatible with PS or some equivilant program... (I never once said I can produce a wireframe, and animate.  I worked WITH people that could do that.  I always supplied concept, then skins)...and the output source to image capture it, I gladly would Heck, even if someone wants the source file I made for the texture, I can supply that to them so as we can see final results.

All I would have to do is, seperate the sections I want this texture to be applied to, mask it, modify the edges so you don't get a weird effect around texture shifts and voila.

odj - I am currently learning flash to put up a new website.  but my photobucket is viewable, as is the multiple times I posted my space.

I Often thought the Area K should of been more a Carbon Fiber thing to be honest.  At least Kevlar or something instead of rubber-ish rubbish.

And for the one who said I'm not in the field and wasn't critiquing... I'm sorry, but you are highly mistaken.  An Associates of Science and Best of Show says otherwise .  Your attitude of taking such offense tells me that you have no idea how to handle a critique, or handle seeing one given out.

And thank you for correcting my grammar error.  Often enough I do not review what I should whilst posting on an internet forum.

Rarebit never was a graphic designer.

Photoshop is not a game developement tool.

Incorrect.  3D skinning within the the Photoshop suite is a staple of the design community from games, to movies and beyond.  What development has he done though?  I see no need for him to use 3D Max, MAYA or any thing along those lines.  Everything he did was within the confines of photoshop, and the Monolith tools made avalible to him.

Also, then why has he claimed to be?  Either or, he is still up for a proffesional critique.  I had classes next to game designers, and worked with many hand in hand.

@ Hydrazine: On and off since Beta, never truely serious about playing since about 2 years ago.  And I also do not assume that the previous designer was anything of a proffesional (It's obvious to the contrary).  But anyone who tries to pass off design, is thus opened to critique and therefore subject to it by the industry.

Chainer, get back to me when you've finished building Datamine Two.

This is the first thing people say when someone critiques work who is not in the field.  Why do you think I would want to work for SOE anyway?  Seriously.  A childish response to a critique.  Plus, this isn't about data-mine.  This is about the previous designers work OVER-ALL.

I can tell that you're insightfull comment is both un-biased and full of proffesionalism.  The fact that you understood a critique to be that of an insult means you must have so much education based in this career feild.  Kudos to you good sir.

Also understand what Phrack said.  The previous designer has never really done anything of his own accord.

Well, if MINEZ is done throwing a fit; I have a few conciouss objections to this patch.

  1. I never thought that: Re-coloring of items was something that deserved praise.  Logo's are a different story within the design world, because that requires training and an eye for it.  But this patch has really shown that 15-minuite fixes are what the previous designer turned the community into.
  2. The "New Textures" some may argue is on the Convert gear isn't a new texture.  Personal firewall used with a 50-75% overlay in screen mode.  Put that on black, and you don't even need to know how to alpha-clip or even use an eraser tool to line it up.
  3. The fact that an attempt to pass re-colored X-mas event gear (Which is JUST re-colored gear from previous years, and this) is a slap in the face for what we were told are "Extras".
  4. The fact that some people will try and pass this off as great, shows how just far up someones something they really were.
  5. All this taken into account there is a serious lack of design professionalism and skill.  The simple fact that it has been repeated time and time again shows that the designer in charge had no desire (Or need, but more importantly DESIGNER) to advance or sharpen skills.  This to me is ludicrous as no REAL designer wants to stay stagnant or keep doing the same thing over.

Now, this is not a "Rip."  This is a professional critique on the work that was done (Design wise) in the latest patch.  We got stuck with a "Designer" who's base abilities lay in taking screen shots of female characters, using old 3D mapping files to "Re-color," and pass off lazy/incompentent design.

For all of you that will say "The previous "Designer" did so much!" look at it from my point of view.  I know how long it takes to do this stuff.  There is no way even this patch (The work on the clothing) took more than... 2 hours tops, 4 if he didn't know how to use photoshop.  I am rather glad to see that all the people that praised the previous designer up one wall and down the other are kind of slapped in the face here.

It just proves I was right all along.  I am not regretting telling him to his face how I felt about his work, which is also something most of you don't understand.  Go to a Graphic Design university like me.  Critiques are harsh, and usually people cry because they cannot take it.  I made it through, obviously the previous Designer wouldn't last in the real design world next to people like Erik Spiekermann or the firm "Experimental Jetset."  Those are firms where it's either Sh**, or it works.  Well, hate to say it, the level of Design people have come to "Love" here, is the first of the two.

Community General Discussion What's Next for MxO? Re:Re:What's Next for MxO? TheChainer 0 02/03/2009 05:37

Croesis wrote:

I can see MxO continuing with a part time dev providing the small fixes for stuff, but with Rarebit intending on leaving us the planned story of how it was supposed to wrap up I don't think I can trust anyone except possibly someone with a burning, in depth understanding of the Matrix, to make even unrelated quests let alone continue the story.

At the moment all I can see, with a heavy heart, is PvP and player RP and while these 'secret' items Rarebit mentioned may allow for RP to flourish again for a while, the lack of official story isn't likely to keep people subscribed in the long run and as the population slowly decreases so will the RP and eventually the PvP too.

Being free to play may extend MxO's life a bit longer, but nothing lasts forever.

As I said, I'll be keeping my eye on MxO, I really do hope it continues and doesn't stagnate.

When have we had that since Watchowski's stepped out?
