Development Discussion Development Roundtable Dream ideas for new mission quests Re:Dream ideas for new mission quests GreyMountain 0 10/19/2008 10:38

With Rare's description of the new mission quest system, I think we are on the verge of some really cool stuff in terms of story missions. Think "Rescue Morpheus from Agents" scene from the movies meets Pandora's Box quests.

Anyway, I had some ideas for some things I'd like to see incorporated into the new mission system, and I'm sure you guys have ideas as well. Dreams, to be sure. But hey, you never know what might make it. So, here they are:

 1. Make mission quests more epic in scale. Get beyond the "go here, hack there, put there, leave area" basics and get really creative with what we have to do (i.e. if you don't bow to Seraph before he speaks, he instead kicks your @$$ and tells you to come back when you've learned some manners).
 2. Make at least one part of the mission quest require a team of people to complete. Maybe a particularly hard boss that requires at least one member of your team to be a patcher, or a mission that requires computers being hacked in different rooms simultaneously. Give it that "You and your hovercraft crew must complete this mission" kind of feel.
 3. Make one part of the quest so that two teams fight over the objective. If you don't win, you can't complete your mission.

That's all I have for now. I'm looking forward to some of the other ideas we can come up with here.

I like the first two ideas.  The third is good, but less appealing to me.

I would like to see more utilisation of a team build to do missions.  We already have missions that are done more easily if you have Hacker or Pick Locks loaded.  I can't see it being too far a step to go further and require other abilities to be loaded.  Perhaps (throwing out an idea) a mission phase that requires you craft a consumable for them (antibiotic or health pill).  Its something that LOTRO does (though they have profession at it is easier to ensure people have the right things to craft, if that makes sense).  The idea of hacking several computers at once would have an awesome feel.  Thinking about it brings back memories of Reloaded.  I highly doubt having the same level of hacking, but thats what I think about when I think of this.

As for the bowing to Seraph, that would be cool.  (Again referencing) LOTRO had a similar quest given by Aragorn some way through the game.  It basically involved exactly what you described.  You had to bow to forward the quest.  You didn't know you had to bow, just that you had to show good manners (or such like).  Would certainly make me feel more immersed in the world.

The third idea.  Its not my cup of tea, but I could see it appealing to some.

A thought that had crossed my mind was that Gray was just saying that they were being reinserted.  When in reality they were being "knocked-off".

EDIT- That actually makes no sense.  Surely he would just tell you to kill them?  Or tell you he was going to kill them?

Development Discussion Development Roundtable A New Approach Re:A New Approach GreyMountain 0 10/10/2008 05:24
If this change brings new players into the game then great.  But I currently see the changes are threatening to reduce numbers again.

Ideally this game needs to be torn down and rebuilt.  But hey, thats an ideal world.

I'll give this a couple of months.  Hopefully it'll see memories of old come flooding back (that being a good thing).

As for liasions. Having only 1 character I've only been exposed to those on Recursion.  Most never seem to be on, and when they are they haven't a clue what RP is going on, or are on just to check mail.  And whether we like it or not, there is favourtism.  Just because they are alts doesn't mean favourtism won't factor into their actions (either IC or OOC).  I wish we had a proper LET again.
Development Discussion Development Roundtable A New Approach Re:A New Approach GreyMountain 0 10/09/2008 14:03
I'm in two minds about all this.

I'm hoping the changes will make the game alot better.  Hopefully the less frequent events will allow better events that I really enjoy.  The fact the meetings will take place on different servers means I'm going to have to make more characters than the sole EPN I have on Recursion.

Liasions?  The only one I liked left a while back anyway.  And given what has happened in the last few days, perhaps its only a good thing.

In terms of EPN and CYPH tags?  I'm not too bothered.  Current EPN seems very much following Zion anyway.  Not that I like it, but the storyline is such.  I'll keep my tag if I can for RP purposes.

My only issue is the hope part of it all.  I think all parts of this need to succeed for the whole change to be for the better.  One issue and the whole thing could fall apart beneath us.

At least while things transition (so to speak) Mines of Moria will be unlocked (18th Nov).  So at least I won't be without a viable MMO.

Also what wasn't needed at all was making the point that org barriers could be bypassed. Well done, good job. Those that did strive to make the point, we already know it can be done, it's really not necessary to reiterate this widely known fact, so what was the point? Considering the low level needed for the meetings, it's not hard to make an appropriate character if you seriously want to take part assuming you have space. Creating a random name is not hard either and even if you intend on deleting the character afterwards having a non button bashed name will allow you to recreate the character if needed the next time easily if you want. Really, I would have expected a little more maturity from some members of the community, especially from those people who have shown decent levels in the past.

You're the people that call us terrorists.  We were simply conforming to your beliefs.  Our little "stunt" caused no issues.  Rarebit kicked us soon enough (as he says, its hard to miss a Gold Tag where it shouldn't be).  I then logged onto my alt to go to the meeting.  Not to cause trouble, but the participate.  The two characters can't be put in the same boat just because my main is EPN.  As I've said before, and will say again, my alt is Machine.  The player behind them should not be a prerequisite for attending.  At no point did Rarebit say "Players main has to be Machine."  He said the character had to have the required rep.

Would probably be a good idea to go back to school and learn how to read, because if you read the previous posts in the thread it's got absolutely *nothing* to do with favouritsm. Infact, it's about names as you addressed in the first part of your post, so maybe you actually did read it correctly and are now just trying to cause trouble/grab attention? Really, don't get where favouritsm comes into a simple organisational meeting but I'm not brushed up on the latest conspiracy theories.

The idea of favourtism could come from the fact that Rarebit has said people with names using a 'I' instead of 'l' is awkward and he'll not teleport someone he can't type out.  Do along comes Dulux with the "trick I" and Rarebit happily tries the name twice.  Yet the character with a random name (no "trick I" I might add) didn't even get the one attempt needed to type his name out.  Its one rule for some and one rule for the others.

I'll say that again.

Dulux - two attempts at porting

Random name - No attempt.  Just one attempt would have sufficed.

Now I'm going to leave this thread now before I say something that gets me the ban stick.

Generally if Gray says he doesn't have information on something, that's because the Machines don't know everything. There are also things he isn't willing to disclose. If this is an attempt to guilt me into giving you story spoilers, it isn't going to work. =p It's also a surprising combination of accusations, given that the cinematics are the front line in the delivery of the story.

Guilt trip you?  Please.  I'll follow the story when you get round to writing it.  I'm just telling you how I saw it.  Granted Gray said their was lack of intel at points when it was obvious he had more to say.  Such as the Oligarchs control over the Machines.  Being told not to discuss?  More like can't discuss because their control prohibits it.  It was just parts when like the Morpheus Sim, EPN hovercrafts.  All convienently lacked intel.  It just seemed that you skipped over those side-stories.  To me it felt like you skipped them because you didn't have any real answer.

Cinematics are the front-line?  Lets see.  In your cinematic we had Veil kill Shimada.  One small segment in the story.  Something that could have been written into a story (one easier to follow too).  The content in game is where the front-line should be.  Where we get to participate and interact.  We don't want to be bystanders watching the story go by in cinematics.  They should be there to support the story, not tell it.

I have to type out each name manually when teleporting people. Between that, checking every person's level, and checking their org, it takes a long time to get everyone through. So no, I won't be wasting everyone's time trying to hunt and peck out long keyboard-mash names just to bring some along some lowbie alt whose "name" nobody can pronounce, and which would spam chat on its own every time they said anything--and that goes for anyone who might try something like that.

So lets see.

1. You're being lazy not typing out a characters name.  Just the one time was sufficient to port him.

2. You thought he would spam chat which is an assumption.  One which, had you ported him, you would have realised is a false accusation.

3. A few PN were there to point out the pointlessness of Org-locks when you port them away anyway.  A Merv was there amongst the crowd until the last second.  And seeing as you have the "manually type when teleporting people" you just simply don't type their name and move onto the next person.

4. My alt was there to actually be part of the story.  A small piece of the story yes (seeing as you've removed most of the content and jammed 6 weeks of story into 30minutes of missions).  The alt is not to be affiliated with my main.  Those are two seperate entities.  They are controlled by one person, correct, but they all have different reasons for being there.  You can't just assume that all my characters are going to be the same EPN loving, cocky, sexy a**hole that my main is.

5.  The meeting format sucked.  Not because it wasn't like an old LE.  Its just you went over the same nonsense again and again.  Stuff most people had worked out for themselves anyway.  You just listened to your select groups and characters and let the rest get increasingly bored.  And I have to assume your lack of "intel" on anything we asked was down to the fact you're too busy drawing those cinematics than actually worrying about where the story, which is hanging by a thread, is actually going.

Whoops, my characters name had a capital i in it, sorry.

Yeah, took me two tries. >_<

Anyway, this is really not that complicated. Liiiy, whatever, that's all fine. You really have to go out of your way (or mash the keyboard) to make a name that's going to be problematic, and the people who do that obviously know what they're doing.

And so, you're quite willing to try a name twice, one that contained a "trick" letter.  Yet, the character who had no "trick" letters and could quite easily typed by just looking at the screen didn't even get one attempt.

Laughable.  The whole thing is quite laughable.  Oh, and seemingly two-faced.

He shouldn't pre-empt on gut feeling.  He has admin powers.  He could have kicked the character at any given time had he been a trouble-maker.  But no, he excluded Odj before a word even sprang from his mouth.  Just because someone has a feeling about something doesn't make them right.  The person first needs to do something to confirm the belief before action is taken.

The name could be code?  The name could be anything.  The guy was there for the meeting and was ignored because of his name?  Even for Rarebit thats petty.  Then again, seemingly any argument would be petty when all odj wanted to do was be part of the meeting.  Heck AngelicDream got in with
An EPN Spy
in her background details.  There is obvious cause for restriction to the meeting.

Everyone has alts for different orgs, be it soley for the missions or the full-blown RP that comes with it.  Since when did a name have anything to do with what the character can do?  Rarebit overstepped the mark here, no question.  The player wanted to go to the meeting as a Machine because that is what his Syntax alt is.  These meetings meant Odj had to create an alt on a server where his main is EPN.  That bias cost his Syntax alt (technically speaking) the org meeting he should have been part of.

Well I respect those that think they like these meetings.  I'm amazed you can put up with such lacklustre content.  But lets not go moaning at those who don't like it.  Rare needs to get feedback from both sides, and so I'm adding feedback to the "I don't like it" side.

If this is the content we can expect then I applaud those who persevere but I certainly won't be hanging around to stand there.  The level of content is dire now.  5 weeks of missions condensed into 1hrs work.  And all this amazing content?  Clothing items that are mostly obtained doing the same 2 quests again and again (and again and again).  A few pieces are elsewhere sure, but they're for quest givers that most people probably did ages ago.

A "corrupt file" error is probably a separate problem. I was able to get into the game okay on my Vista install. We're aware of the "missing file" error reported by the launcher in Live, and hopefully they'll figure out what the server config issue is that's causing it (9mmfu says it didn't come up on our various test servers).

I kind of understand what you're saying.  And I certainly agree it was rather short-lived.  Even with the character crash I think it truly lasted all of 20minutes from their original appearance.  I was expecting to see them be made a level 100 or just incredibly high buffs and resistances.

I intially thought that the original crash was Rarebit pulling them off and actually weakening their buffs (Pace seemed to be regenning faster than we could hit her).  But I think, in retrospect, there was only a few of us attacking at the time.  Then the Zion zerg did truly take over.

I enjoyed the short-lived fighting, and seeing a few people hyper-jump to their deaths.  That was hilarious.

I don't complain on these, but the crash allowed Zion to take over the lobby. Anyway, it was too fast to be entertaining for a LE, but at least I was able to take some shoots intended for Ookami.

How would a Character crash have truly affected the lobby events?  I'm not saying you're poor losers or some such, but I feel the location was a good choice as it led to the use of tactics.  Rather than everyone wailing in from all directions, dieing and rezzing.  With several choke points you had to make decisions.  Decisions that would determine whether you would live or die, and whether Zion, Merv or Machine won.

Though I will say there were so few Machines, I *slightly* felt sorry for them.  Nevertheless, Pluribus Neo ftw (with help from a few others.)

And has anyone else had Hitmen after them yet?

My guy has Talon Merc's after him, they had a note on them saying I had a 1000 cap reward on my head

If you're evil, Regulators come after you. If you're good, Talon Mercs come after you.

Yeah.  I've had Talon Mercs after me too.  But I have had ones just called Hitmen.  There orders came from Burke who I killed.  I went to visit Tenpenny Towers and none seemed any the wiser, though I did wipe out some Ghouls for them in the hope of getting access to the Penthouse Suite thats empty.  Any idea how to get that?

Oh, and I haven't stumbled as far along the quest as Darm but I did get to Rivet City before visiting GNR.  Still had all the dialogue options available.  I had no idea who Doctor Li was, but apparently I did. :S
