Surprisingly, I haven’t seen anyone asking about Abilities
and Ability Codes. The decisions regarding Abilities were more difficult than
those about items. Simply put, we are refunding the Information values of all
the Abilities on your characters and the cost of leveling them (if they are
levelable).

I understand this is not an ideal choice for everyone, but
it is the most logical and feasible. All Abilities with any combat value have
been touched, so the odds are that a few players may no longer want a
particular Ability for one reason or another. Refunding Information gives
everyone a clean slate to make new choices.

Obviously, the big question on everyone's mind is does this mean they are exchanging our abilities for info?  The "this is not an ideal choice for everyone" statement makes me think that is the case.  If so, this needs to be optional.  While information is hard to come by, farming red frags is definitely the hardest part of obtaining abilities.  It took me a very long time to create all of my abilities, and asking all of us to do that again is  not reasonable.  We need a clarification on this, please.

No comment on the org issue, although I'm glad to know the truth now.

Regarding the cinematics, whether they are Flash or AVI doesn't matter to me.  My question is why are you converting the existing cinematics?  They work fine with the current system don't they?  You guys have enough to do.

Wow, Rarebit, I didn't see that coming.  Thanks for everything you have done for the game and the community.  I've been meaning to jack back in and check out all the new stuff you added, especially in the past year.  Maybe I'll go ahead and do that.

By the way, I ran across this job opening on the same day you wrote the Thank You letter.  You were the first person that came to my mind, but I figured Rarebit is the last person I want to walk away from MxO.  Little did I know you were already leaving.  Anyway, if you're up for Norway, it could be an adventure.

Whatever you are doing, I hope it brings more joy, peace, happiness, and cheesy toast into your life.   Later dude.

I was one of the pre-order beta people that never received my copy of MxO Magazine sent to all pre-order players.  I sent in a petition, but never got my copy, so I figured they ran out.  Well, about a month ago, I was cleaning out my closet and found a white envelope mixed in with some other old mail.  Lo and behold!  It contained my copy of the magazine! :smileyvery-happy:  I know there are some that actually did not receive it, so I've posted a copy on my web site: www.mxostory.com.  Enjoy.

Reading the Paul Chadwick interview months later is very interesting.  Many of the little "hints" given have since turned into real events.  I think I found one exception:

There's even one player who will get to appear in a cinematic we have one mapped out so that there's only one path he can follow.  Once somebody does that in gameplay, we'll use the character he's built and plug him into the cinematic we've otherwise already prepared.

Think this was supposed to happen when The Assassin was killed on the barge?

Recursion World Discussion - Recursion Your WoW character? Re:Your WoW character? Super_Jenius 0 11/02/2006 11:34
A good portion of original members from The Company are playing WoW.  We're Dynasty on Drak'thul server.  I'm currently a level 41 Pally, but I'm moving up.  Our guild likes to do raids, but I have yet to participate.  I wasn't sure I would like the fantasy setting, but I'm having a lot of fun.  I like the way the story progresses as you level up.

WoW vs. MxO = Apples vs. Oranges, I think, at least as far as the intended audience.  I like both games.  I do hope the devs are playing some WoW, because there are some things I'd like to see in MxO.

As I recall, Neo and Trinity moved through the lobby quite easily, albeit with style.  It wouldn't be the same if they were all level 50.  I imagine we'll get hit with a lot more bullets in CR2.0, so it may feel more challenging then.
Community General Discussion Worth Playing Again? Re: Worth Playing Again? Super_Jenius 0 02/20/2006 10:36

The short answer is yes, now is a good time to get back in.  If you are looking to try it out for a single month, you might want to wait a few days until around March 1, so you can be sure to experience the Anniversary Event, which runs Friday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26.

The concerns you mentioned have been the priority for the MxO team.  Bugs are always an issue, but the game is more stable than it has ever been and it keeps getting better.  Combat Revision 2.0 is currently in development and addresses balance issues (i.e. hackers) and problems with combat.  Pandora's Box provides some good high-level content, and better items are coming for high-level players.  Other tweaks and adjustments have been made to make the game better.

I should note that the primary vehicle for new content continues to be advancement of the storyline with cinematics, critical missions, and live events.  The SOE transition and development of CR2.0 have slowed things down quite a bit, but a lot has happened, and I'm hoping things come along more frequently in the next year.  To catch up on the story, you can check out my web site.  Soon, we will be able to run old critical missions for all orgs, so you'll be able to catch up on those as well.  So, new content will be related primarily to the story, and perhaps small additions of content here and there.  As far as I know, there are not plans to release an expansion anytime soon that will open up new parts of the city and raise the level cap.

Bottom line: If you're like me and really want to find out what happens next in the Matrix, then new story content is great.  If you could care less about the story, then I would wonder how much lasting appeal this game would have to you.  In any case, the game is better than ever, so it won't hurt to give it another try.  You *might* even be able to get your old account back.  I don't think the MxO team has deleted accounts, but I'm not sure what happens if you never transitioned your old account to SOE.
Community General Discussion SOE Re: SOE Super_Jenius 0 02/20/2006 11:37

In terms of investment, I actually agree with the way SOE is handling things.  The quickest way to kill this game would be to make a major investment and get no return.  Sure, I would like to see content and changes happen sooner rather than later, but I don't think pouring more cash in is the right thing for this game.  WBIE took its shot at making this the biggest MMO ever, and for various reasons, it just didn't pan out.  When something like that happens, it's good to refocus and get down to bare-bones.  That gives the game the best chance of continuing while trying to build a following.

As far as getting the game reviewed again, most game mags/sites won't do that, but they will review an expansion pack, which gives them a chance to talk about all the improvements in the game.  SWG got mediocre reviews like MxO, but the Jump to Lightspeed expansion seemed to fair better, and at the very least got reviewers to look at the game again.  Unfortunately, it appears that isn't going to happen anytime soon for MxO.

I've thought about putting together a Should I Buy MxO? FAQ for that very purpose, or borrowing from one if it already exists.  I think it will mean more coming from players than whatever SOE puts together.  What we need is a free trial to go with it, as well as a guide to what players can do for their 10 days to get the most out of the game.

Community General Discussion Dont implement cr 2.0: petition Re: Dont implement cr 2.0: petition Super_Jenius 0 03/04/2006 22:32

My first duel in CR 2.0 was in Update 5 or 6.  It was against a level 38 (I'm 50) and he pwned me.  How embarrassing.  It didn't take long to realize that combat has changed completely.  Take everything you've learned about combat in the past year and throw it out the window.  This is, I believe, the biggest impediment to adoption of the CR, not whether it is good or bad, just that it is so different from what we have now.

However, I also remember fairly early in the game several members of our faction in our 30's and 40's took on a single 50, and we didn't stand a chance.  Now THAT was embarrassing, and it just wasn't right.  Changes were needed.  With Update 7, I'm taking a closer look at the combat changes, and I can see now that things are moving in the right direction.

The first pill to swallow is that the emphasis in combat is no longer on tactics, it is on damage.  You can influence your rolls a little bit, but they will still be all over the map, so they don't matter as much as they used to.  Rest assured that you are going to hit, so the main question is how much damage you will do.  Also, you will be hit a lot, so you better be able to take a beating.  This is why there is so much talk about damage resistance.

That leads us into clothing buffs.  Now that things are done right, I can see how poorly clothing buffs were handled before (sorry devs).  There is only one pair of MCT +9pts pants in the game right now.  Wouldn't you rather be able to choose among 10 different colors and styles?  That's basically what you'll get in 2.0, except the buffs are geared toward resistance instead of tactics.  Of course, there will still be special drops, but it is no longer a no-brainer to use them all the time.  Take the Sakura Bandana for example, which is still an awesome drop IMO.  It provides the same IS regen as the Fedora, plus 30pts of resistance.  That's pretty good, but there are also probably some level 50 hats out there that offer 36pts of resistance.  So you have to choose.  Do you want the IS regen or the additional resistance?  The answer may depend on your loadout and stats.  While I'm sure some good, well-balanced loadouts will emerge, we will have so much more choice than we had before, and that to me is a good thing.

To sum up, I'd ask all to give CR 2.0 a chance.  Maybe spend some more time unlearning what you already know and figure out how the 2.0 system works.  You might just end up liking it.  As a community, we want to grow, and it pains me when I see people leave the game.  While that may send a message, it certainly does more damage to the game and to our community than it does to the suits at SOE.  To those of you that think the time would have been better spent on developing story content, I hear ya.  With CR 2.0 almost done and the Anniversary Event right around the corner, the future looks bright, and I expect heavy emphasis to be on new content in our second year.  Stick around a little while longer and you won't miss out.

Community General Discussion Buy-back exploit? Buy-back exploit? Super_Jenius 0 04/13/2006 15:29

Given the current controversy about bans, I thought I would ask if this will be considered an exploit before trying it.  The impending hotfix will temporarily raise red frag drops and vendors will buy-back abilities at 100% of the price.  I'm sure I'm not the only one that sees a good way to make $info here, and without the risk of the Marketplace.  Will coding abilities for the express purpose of selling them to vendors be considered an exploit?

My opinion is this should be allowed, since we need all the info we can get with the combat upgrade.   Of course, I don't want to end up on the receiving end of the ban stick. :smileysurprised:  Let us know please.
Community General Discussion TIP: Faster Screenshots TIP: Faster Screenshots Super_Jenius 0 04/13/2006 17:50

Don't you hate it when you find the perfect moment for a screenshot, press F12, then your computer freezes for 30 seconds while MxO saves the shot?  This usually only happens on the first shot in game, but it is still annoying.  I finally found the solution to this problem: move your screenshots to another folder.  I just moved over 1000 jpgs out of my MxO folder.  I figured I would clean up a little and make a "Year 1" folder.  Once I did, the first shot now happens instantaneously.

I used to think that MxO was loading a screenshot engine and that's why there was a delay.  Apparently, MxO is simply searching through all of the jpgs for the next available number.  The more jpgs you have, the longer it takes.  The devs really should just implement a counter in an INI file or something like that, but I doubt this is a priority.

Note that filenames will start over at screenshot_0.jpg, so when it is time to move the files again, make sure you don't overwrite your previous shots.
