I found this on the Recursion Forums, and it was written by Gothique.  I thought it might help on Syntax as well and I hope it gets stickied like it did on Recursion's Forums:

 

Here is a quick guide. Posting here as well for the Recursion friends

Step 1: Create your character
Your redpill has origins and a history. It is important because sooner or later people will
inquire about your past. Having a good solid backstory is very helpful for you and the peole
you interact with. Try to be imaginative, not all bluepills were office worker contacted on
their computer!
You can also ignore the game prelude with a Zion contact and say you were contacted
by Merovingians or machinists. Don't forget to mention details about your previous life
and how you took the redpill.
You can also roleplay other characters such as bluepills, programs, exiles, agents ...
Emphasize on your goals, motivation, fears, hopes unless you want to keep it a secret.
having your story written somewhere is nice, don't hesitate posting your story on the forums!


Step 2: Joining the RP community
But..I don't know many RPers! That's the main problem newcomers experience.
It's not hard to find them, the forums are the best place.
Search in the factions recruitment threads for RP factions
Scout the Next Renaissance forums related to your server.
Roleplayers love player events and parties
Remember most events are organized by RP minded people.
Post your story, your adventures in the Megacity so your name is out there to be contacted.

Step 3: First contact
You are in an event and/or have a list of players you would like to meet.
Don't wait in  corner for someone to speak to you.
Unfortunately there is no way of knowing who is a RPer in the Matrix
So don't be shy and don't wait in  corner for someone to speak to you.
Engage a conversation hinting your will to RP.
Example: Greetings Gothique, let me introduce myself. My name is xxxxx and I was curious about
you latest quest.
Roleplayers are very friendly people and will rarely turn someone down.
 It happens that we are busy, especially me hehe.

Step 4: Joining a story or plot
Once you are familiar with a few roleplayers, join the scene.
Ask and learn about what is going on.
Think how your character can contribute, pick a side and work with them to make the
story enjoyable.
The more people in a story the better! Before you know it, you will be a leading
figure in an event

Step 5: Giving feedback to the community
I like to keep the community informed of what is going on.You may post in the forums, but make sure someone else hasn't sarted a post on that particular story.
Explain simply and clearly what is going on, the people involved.
Include pictures as well, it makes it look better!
Not only it helps those who couldn't make it but also promotes RP and livens up the community!

And finally some tips:
-Have the people you RP the most with on your buddy list.
Invite them when something interesting is happening.

-Remember to use OOC or brackets when you are speaking Out of character. It means that
you stop acting briefly to make a comment or ask a question.
IC: In character (back to acting mode).

-Use * or :: to express emotes and acts by text
Example:  Gothique: ::eyes Liliane in disbelief::

-Don't force other RPers to do what you want.
Good: Gothique: ::moves towards Liliane's neck baring her fangs::
Bad: Gothique:: jumps on Liliane, sucking her blood dry then turning her into a vampire ghoul::
Let them decide if it what they would like, remember it is a team work. Not your story but ours.
If you aren't sure how to make someone do something, simply send a OOC tell and if they
agree proceed normally.
Example you are with a group of players and you want one of them to kneel.
You can make it unpredictable by simply asking him/her to kneel and wait for the response.
Or ask in a tell if he/she is ok to kneel before you ask. Keep all possibilities open in
your mind so you aren't caught short in your roleplaying.

-If you want to create your own story, speak to the people who might join in.
You can explain to them what your plans are.
Don't give too much information for the sake of fun and element of surprise.
Personally I only plan for major events, I prefer to improvise and see where it takes me.

-We need more villains!

I just wanted to say "Thank You" to all who attended the party at Club Parallaxis last night (Saturday June 3rd).  If you were one in attendance you probably know that was both my IC and OOC 30th birthday.  I had actually been invited out to go bar hopping with my friends but I didnt...anyway, you all made the party really awesome and better than any night of bar hopping that could have been accomplished.  There was only one minor disturbance ::cringes at the Rang-Rang dance that haunts him::...Overall it was the best party I have ever experienced in an MMO and that wouldnt be the case if it wasnt for all of you who made it happen.  Special thanks goes to the DJs of SI Radio, DJMcBain (who's idea it was in the first place) and Euphraxia, for just being who she is...*pokes her*  I have to thanks Nelks as well for pimping my RSI!!!

New to Roleplay?...not?...I have been RPing for more than a decade and would be glad to answer any questions you all might have about Roleplaying in the MMO.  I am also holding RP classes on the Syntax Server beginning in the next couple of weeks so if you wish to attend create a character and attend.

Ok, There are currently five threads about this new faction The System on the Syntax boards.  I could understand one or even two threads like this....but this is getting out of hand.  You want PvP? Go to Vector, but stop trying to pull everyone and their brother to Vector with you.

 

Syntax is the unofficial RP server, just as Linenoise was before the server merge.  Please stop creating these threads for The System here...do it where it belongs, in the Vector faction and recruiting boards.

I created a thread like this on the Syntax Forum, but since we have alot of new redpills I thought I would create one here too.  Feel free to ask any question regarding RP and I will do my best to answer it.

I will be giving a lecture series on the art of Roleplaying.  If you are interested in attending these "classes", respond to this thread or send me a PM and I will add you to my buddies list in-game and contact you with the time, date and location when the class will be held.

 

These classes will be similiar to a college course, though not near as technical since you dont have to pay nor I am being paid to instruct them.

 

The first topic we will approach is one that must be overcome if you engage in any form of Roleplaying, separating the difference between your Out of Character feelings and your In Character feelings.  This is the first obstacle any Roleplayer must face, and usually the hardest.

 

I also welcome any experienced Roleplayers to come and give their input.  All of these classes will be OOC as a way to facilitate learning...so leave you character at the door.

 

Hope to see alot of you sign up for this...it will be enlightening for everyone involved, and enhance your experience while playing MxO.

 

Ok, I have Hyper Dodge maxed to level 50 and have a couple of Ballistic Defense buffs on my clothing...yet I still get hit by bullets around 70% of the time...anyone know what I can do to lower this?  Or is this something that needs to be addressed by the Devs.  Ballistic Defense seems to be messed up.  Oh! and my Perception is at 17.  Luckily I have high ballistic resistance so when I get shot by level 50 NPCs, they only do around 40 damage to me...but still I think I should be dodging more bullets!  Any input on this?

Title says it all.  Now that the CR has been implemented, when will MxO hit the stores again?  The sooner we start getting more players the more effort and resources the Devs will have to bring back LET, add more content...etc, etc, etc that soooo many on these forums gripe about.  Does anyone know when this will happen? I think it is only fair that we should be able to change our background information as well as our "character type" (True Believer, New Age Hippy etc...), with all the changing attributes hacks we will be recieving.  As you guys have already pointed out, every level will count with this new system and we could gain 3 extra points by being able to change our character type.  For example, right now I am a Detached Spectator and I would like to be a True Believer for the CR 2.0.  I am also a RPer and since I have now developed my background, I would for it to be seen in my details.

Anubias was born on June 3, 1976. Nothing is known of his parents, except they named him and left him on the doorstep of the Mara Congregational Church. He was found by Sister Margaret there and taken to a nearby orphanage where he was spent the first nine years of his life. Not much is known of Anubias's life during these early years except from his teachers who reported Anubias as having a "high intelligence" and certain "psychic powers", namely telekinesis and telepathy. It was these "psychic powers" which brought the Oracle to the orphanage to adopt Anubias.

Upon adoption, Anubias stayed under the supervision of the Oracle for the next few years. There are even fewer reports during this time. All that is known is from a few neighbors of the Oracle who reported,"He is one of her kids". Anubias also met his best friend when in the Oracle's custody, Tyndall. Though Tyndall was a couple of years his junior, the two children displayed an immediate bond. Anubias stayed with the Oracle until he was extracted from the Matrix at age 12, the same day Tyndall was removed. This was 11 years before Neo was freed by Morpheus.

Upon removal from the Matrix, Anubias lived with a black-op corpsman named Hollis and his wife in Zion. Anubias spent the next few years in Zion mainly studying at the Temple where he took interest in religion and philosophy. It is reported Anubias was admired by his peers and was often able to diffuse arguements that are common among pre-teens. The priests of the Temple were very impressed with Anubias and have stated that Anubias was able to "talk like an adult about very complex ideas". During this time, there was also sightings of Anubias talking with Morpheus about philosophy and other things that interested them both. Tyndall was said to be a frequent visitor to the Hollis household, especially when Hollis had returned from missions in the Matrix. Tyndall and Anubias liked hearing about his adventures inside the Matrix.

When Anubias was 17, Hollis was killed in the Matrix and this affected Anubias greatly. Councilor Hamann took a interest in Anubias during this hard time in his life and became Anubias's surrogate father. Some speculate that Hamann was "grooming" Anubias to become a future Council member because of his quick wit and level head. Anubias had little interest in this though and joined the Zion Military when he became of age to follow in Hollis's footsteps.

Anubias's military file is "Top Secret" by orders of the Council and no more information can be attained at this time. What is known is that Anubias is now 29 and was Captain of the Hovercraft Delphi, and eventually became Commander of Archimedes Lever (as Commander Cascade had to step down) and currently returning from Zion after several months of "down time" following Morpheus's death. He currently resides as First Mate on HvCFT Guardian of the Omega Syndicate.

((I have been gone for quite a while and I thought it might be a good idea to get to know some of the new characters here on Syntax.  The best way I know to go about this is with a character biography.  This could also be a good thread for roleplayers to give some background about their characters. For all of you that might have been wondering where I am, I have gone to SWG on the Starsider server to indulge my Star Wars RPing.  I opted for the StationPass and will still be playing MxO but not as much as in the past.  I will more than likely come back when Pandora's Box is released since I have exhausted all the other content in this game.  So I will return...and you might still see me lurking in the shadows or defending Zionists that are outnumbered between now and then.

 

I hope some of you all will come to SWG too since it is a good deal to get the StationPass...in my opinion.  If you do, look me up and we can talk and keep in touch.  I have far too many friends to thank you all by name but you all know who you are.  I will see you around the MegaCity in the future
