I am one of those new players. Played WoW, GW, LoTR, etc and I really like the Matrix so I thought I would give it a try. I have to say that some of the game is very impressive, but this game is not very new user friendly.
The tutorial I took was broken. It involved some ai shooting at me, and even though he was standing infront of me in plain sight I continued to get an error that my target was not in sight or something along those lines. Then I ended up in a subway where I was supposed to use a phonebooth. Well problem there is when I clicked on the phonebooth nothing. After restarting the character again I managed to get through the tutorial.
There just seem to be a great many things about this that are not really designed to draw players in. Take just a little while ago. I was in Mara, I thought from the story this area is safe from agents. I was hanging out at the hard line, an agent level 250 kills me. I come back and wouldn't you know I die again. At this point I logged off. Maybe I don't understand why exactly an area that is supposed to be "safe" has a level 250 agent running around killing things. I thought at first it was part of the story. The problem with that is that if the Agent were there as part of the story he would be hunting all of the Smith virus programs that were around him and not a level 15.
Earlier in the day there were problems with people being flagged for pvp even though they had not entered pvp.
There have been numerous problems in just a few days, and that has really turned me off of the game. I can only imagine how bad the problems must be for players that have been around for awhile. If there are that problems in such a small area, I don't know if I want to see the rest of the game. That isn't everything, I could go on about problems with the jumping system, clipping issues, graphical anamolies etc.
I really like parts of the game though. The first time I "hyper jumped" it was awesome. I probably jumped over and over again for a good hour just looking at it. I like watching the higher level players fight because it looks so much like the movies when they start dodging and shooting. Even with all of those good things I don't know if it is worth it. I went ahead and paid for the game so I have a month to check it out. So far I have met some really nice people, and thank goodness for that. What the game completely lacked in information those people made up for. It really is a good thing because the game is painfully lacking in information. It doesn't tell you a good many things, and from what I have found out some of what it tells you is just completely wrong.
Anyway you were mentioning newer players, and I wanted to tell you my experience so far. Maybe someone will read it and try to fix a few things. I get the sense from most players that this game is about dead, but if you want to bring in newer players I think fixing things like tutorials and providing ample information would be a very good start. Remember that the majority of your audience is going to be either first time players, or people from games like wow and they need that information because things are very different here than other mmos.
