    The hovercraft Gosub touched down on a incline within an abandoned sewer some fifty miles from the Washington crater. The familiar shudder of the deck beneath Captain Fortran’s feet had only just subsided when Flick, the ship’s operator, radioed to the bridge where Fortran and his crew stood watching the proximity sensors.
    “Captain, its gonna take a little more time to hack into this one,” Flick said. “The protocols are a little different.”
    “We’ve got plenty of time, Flick,” Fortran responded. “Try using the older hacks first and work your way forward.”
    “I still don’t understand, Captain. What’s different about this one?” Naso, the ship’s pilot, had been an operator for two years before he was promoted to pilot after Bat, who was now serving with Zion Control, took his place in the operator’s chair. “It’s like this isn’t even the Matrix or something.”
    “It isn’t, really,” replied Fortran. “If your operator hadn’t skipped the history and application programs and gone straight to combat training, you would have heard about Smallburg.” Fortran slipped on a headset and pressed the transmit key. “All hands will meet on the broadcast deck in two minutes for instructions.”

    Michael sat in the chair staring at the plastic contraption in the bubble-wrap lined box in his lap. It had come in the mail earlier that day before his parents came home from work, and he had hidden it in his closet until they went to bed. Now, by the light of his desk lamp, he felt a surge of excitement.
    “The AppleCat modem… three-hundred baud rate,” he whispered to himself with reverence. Michael didn’t have a job or means to purchase this type of expensive equipment, but he did have the credit card number of one Irving J. Poppenstein.
    He connected the modem to his Apple ][ and dialed an elite bulletin board service. Five minutes later, he was drinking deep from the wealth of information he had found.

   “OK, this will be a routine extraction. A few things are different about Smallburg that you wont find in Mega City, though. It’s a much smaller simulation, with a much smaller population. Now, that’s good and bad. Good thing is that there are less blues to host agents. Bad thing is, it’ll be way easier to track us if we start making noise. So be careful in there. Also, Smallburg is used to beta-test programs like weather or automobiles, time moves much slower in there than out here. Five minutes in Smallburg is like an hour in the real. Flick will have the temporal displacement program running so comms will still work. Last thing is, well, you think that in the Matrix it is the year 1999, but in Smallburg, its closer to 1983. So no phones in public." Fortran glared at Flick. " And if my RSI jacks in wearing a pair of parachute pants and a zipper jacket, you'll be cleaning the protein machine for a month." Fortran's face morphed to a slight smile at his own rare joke, then back to serious. "OK, that’s it. Any questions?”

    Wardialers were amazing. Michael had already dialed half of the numbers in the 459 exchange, and found three computer terminals connected to the Telco system. His eyes hurt a little from lack of sleep and staring at the black screen with the green letters, but he was wide awake. So he knew he wasn’t dreaming when his screen cleared and he saw a message at the top materialize:

       The Matrix has you…

    He’d been discovered. Someone out there at three in the morning in this tiny town has found me and knows what I am doing, he thought. Michael’s bowels turned to water and his heart began to race as he ripped the phone cord out of the wall, disconnected the modem, and stashed it under a pile of dirty clothes. He rubbed his eyes as a new message appeared:

       Its too late. They already know.

    Michael unplugged the computer from the wall and got in his bed, shaking in fear.

Eyepopper used pirated machine programs to unload his emotions and load
anger, but he lost control and is now rampaging through the Recursion
instance! The machines have placed a 50 million $info bounty on his
head that anyone can collect!

Eyepopper hacked his jack-in protocols, and he's gone crazy! If the system will let him kill you, he's going to!

From
now until Saturday, May 11, Eyepopper will be PvP hot on the Recursion
server! Fight him, learn his tactics, because on Saturday May 11th,
various groups will offer a large reward for his capture!

The rules:

Eyepopper will jack in every night and fight.
On Saturday, he will jack into an undisclosed hardline in the Downtown district at 9:30 p.m PST.
Hostile teams or individuals will receive 50 million information for his forced jackout.
Machine teams or individuals will receive 50 million for trading him an Antibiotic 5.0.
Eyepopper cannot use hardlines to move around Downtown, nor can he leave the district.
Eyepopper can only conceal or sneak if he is engaging a target. He must flee (if he does) unsneaked.
Low
level hostile operatives (zion or merf) are encouraged to create a
machine alternate so they may participate (although hyperjump and
serious movement speed boost is recommended).
Failure to capture Eyepopper in two hours will result in his head exploding! No reward for anyone!

This
is my first event. If it sounds suspiciously like "the hunt for"
events, its probably because its just like one. However, theres a whole
lotta RP in this one, so check this out till Saturday.

The last of the coolant dripped out of the pan into a tarnished metal
cup Eyepopper held under the spigot. "Almost there," he whispered as he
dumped the cup into the drain at his feet. A week ago, he would have
stayed utterly silent while tinkering with the neuro spike equipment:
Trifraft had given strict orders ("We just got this new interface and
you wanna screw with it? The answer is no") that no one was to modify
the hardware or software that jacked the crew into the matrix.

But Trikraft was asleep with the rest of the crew. Eyepopper had
volunteered to take a double shift, since he was quite sore from his
previous shift. He had been jumped by four Zion operatives, whom he had
been informed were not to be considered hostile, and jacked out with a
bloody nose, a fat lip and a loose tooth. Eyepopper had the operator
deck to himself for the next six hours.

Eyepopper had a plan for action. He had been warned by Trilateral's
voice coming through the speaker with authority. Although the sound
quality was poor due to distance, Eyepopper understood perfectly. "Hey,
protect the truce, defend the power plant. Its not like you died. Don't
crack up on me, we need you in the right frame of mind."

The right frame of mind, Eyepopper thought to himself. He wanted
revenge in the worst way. Perhaps this desire for revenge consumed him
to the point that he chose the path he chose. Now, he couldn't bear to
disobey orders from his commanders, because he respected them and felt
bound to them as comrades in arms always do. He could never even
accidentally go against one of his own.

Eyepopper had a way around that, though. He had obtained, through luck
and craft, a copy of the reports made by the machines when they were
mapping the human brain. The machine protocols for raising particular
emotions in hardwired humans to stimulate their body heat index for use
in emergencies translated easily to the operators powerful computer.
Refilling the radiator, Eyepopper inserted a disk into the computer and
ran to a chair.

He had a window, he'd programmed in time to make it from the operator's
chair to the operative's chair. He put his feet in the restraints,
inserted the neuro jack, and waited for the program to start.

He didnt expect it to hurt this bad, though. He felt like he did the
day he was awakened, raw esaring pain shooting up his spine and into
his head, until it disappeared like blood covered by swiftly falling
snow. He felt love for his bluepill family, as real now as it was then,
and then he realized he didnt care about them anymore. Then he swelled
with hope for the truce and the synthesis of machine and human
intelligence, and then that was gone too. Then he was very angry.

As the program deleted each of his emotions, Eyepopper was left with
only anger. At the end of the deletion programs, the loading programs
began. Tiny electrical charges rearranged the chemicals in his head
until the only emotion Eyepopper could feel was hate. He felt his jaw
clench, his hands ball into fists, and then the neighborhood around
Mara Central began to stack into the loading area as he chambered a
round in his shotgun. "They're gonna pay."

well, ive put off complaining till just now. but my subject is not the merg, unflagged stuns, or zion hackers., although i hate all that too.

im talking about machines.

there are some folks that would have you beleive that their machine faction is the best, the ultimate pwn, etc. we have contests, do the rp, whatever. but when it comes right down to it, when the rubber meets the road, there are only a handful of machines willing to put up a struggle for their props.

if i were dancing at polyvinyl at goth's "hey look im an exile werewolf cuz underworld 2 was soo cool" party, and a flagged machine came into the room pursued by five zions, i would never stand by and let him or her be steamrolled. but this happened to me while "respected members of the machine community" looked on. they didnt even act like they noticed.

the machine players on recursion are an even match for zion and merv, if not superior. why dont they act like it in pvp?
