Procurator wrote: Not sure about The Last Free City. Sounds nice and it doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, but it's a different community. Would the migration of the MxO community to the LFC community really work out? The MxO community is distinctive; we know each other, we have our own RP and the like. Cohabiting with another community wouldn't work out too well if you ask me. It wouldn't be a natural place to, say, continue our RP (for those who care). Great for general Matrix stuff, but not for MxO.
Luckily, it's a fairly accepting community for true Matrix fans. We just don't like people joining specifically to talk crap on the movies. You'll find a wide variety of opinions, from people who like MXO and see it is a valid contribution (though I don't see why it would matter, I loved MXO in the beginning but I dislike what it became), to people who dismiss it or never bothered to look into it. Plus, if enough people came over, we'd open up a section just for The Matrix Online (with the DN1 forums, there was never a need to do so in the past). I see no reason why there should be seperate websites for Matrix fans versus people who played the Matrix Online. The people who play MXO that want to continue talking about the Matrix should be general Matrix fans in the first place... having a rift doesn't help our cause. Plus, we had John Gaeta post http://forums.thelastfreecity.com/v...?p=48765#p48765 http://forums.thelastfreecity.com/v...?p=49106#p49106 (excuse the broken HTML code from the old forum system)

Semi-apology, I posted that before I read your entire post, haha. Interesting ideas, but no it's not always 1999. It's always the peak of our civilization as it was at the turn of the century, but the years change.

Hey guys I got a leaked copy of the end event for MXO!!!!! There's going to be stages set up around the city and these lights in a park that we can switch on and off, but they don't really do anything, and then the game will just end with a picture of Paul Chadwick making out with Rarebit.

Ok I really should wait to post this until I get the site redesign finished buuuut... TLFC - The Last Free City thelastfreecity.com
This forum has been around since the movies were released. It was originally, and fittingly thematrixonline.com, but Warner Bros. purchased the domain from the original owner. We've got 10 years of in-depth Matrix analysis, good discussion, original stories, and a good community. A few years ago I took over as an admin and as lead web developer. I'm a professional user experience designer and web developer, and I'm working on an all-encompassing redesign of the forum, adding new features such as a blog/news front page. The site has been there for 10 years and isn't going anywhere. All these faction websites and forums set up for the Matrix Online specifically may not last very long, who knows what the owner will do or when they will run out of funding. With TLFC, we've been here way before The Matrix Online and we'll be there way after The Matrix Online, guaranteed. It's run by Matrix fans, for Matrix fans. I'd honestly love it if you guys would come over and make TLFC your home, like it's been my one true internet home since seriously 2003. I want to keep seeing your great Matrix stories, pictures, comics, and just general discussions. P.S. We have a very loose TOS and only ban people for deliberately trying to disrupt the forum badly. Other than that, and disgusting stuff, most things are all good. P.P.S. I also own www.zionarchive.com and I would like help setting this up as an archive of the complete Matrix story, including the Matrix Online.

You guys, the story was loosely defined to begin with. Chadwick made up a bunch of stuff that never went anywhere because it was either never intended to or they didn't get around to it. Then Rarebit made things worse by making up his own stuff. It all got way too convoluted with little answers and little making sense. I honestly would say to completely disregard anything after the first 2 years, especially anything that came after the cinematics stopped being rendered with the in-game engine. The months the game was with Monolith is the only time things were going completely as planned with the story. But to be truthful, in the future for any new movies, games, or comics, the entirety of The Matrix Online's story will likely be completely disregarded and ignored. Make your own peace with what happened, but there's no way to figure much of any "canonical" events with this story, besides the very beginning with Morpheus and the search for Neo and the truce and all of us as new redpills.

They should have paid a sub when the going got tough like the rest of us. The only mmo based on the Matrix universe, and the legends of the game bailed on it. Money talks in this day.
Really, are you flippin' daft? I did sub when the going got tough. I subbed for several years of this game declining. Eventually enough is enough. I've got better things to spend my money on than a broken, mistreated game. I love The Matrix universe and always will, and I loved the first 6 months of this game when we had most of what we were promised when we bought it. Why pretend to love a shadow of something I used to like? If that's not some Matrix-style philosophy - that people would "defend the system" in the face of imminent demise - I don't know what is.

Okey, I was LESIG original. Director's commentary: Interestingly, LESIG was not originally intended to be the event helpers they turned out to be. Our first task was to go around the city and take neat screenshots of the world to be used in some sort of special part of the website. I think some of these pictures were used eventually. My liaison was one of the first E Pluribus Neo liaisons and we helped to shape how the organization was perceived, with surprisingly little direction from Rarebit. I was Novalux on Syntax. I honestly worked hard to try and improve the gaming experiences for the players there since the game was crap and I remember fondly playing with the old LET team and especially the Novalis II. Unforunately, work + school + losing interest in a dying game made it so I had less and less time to jack in at all, let alone with my liaison. But I made sure to help craft and plan events behind the scenes. Director's commentary: One I remember very fondly is an event I completely created myself. It was the event with The Scanner:
This was an exile who used to be a program which attempted to scan bluepills for anomalies in an effort to discover when rebels were in the process of extracting a redpill. Since the truce, he became obsolete. The Cypherites thought this would be a useful program to have on their side and so their goal was to escort him to a secure location after meeting with him. EPN's goal was to assassinate the program before reaching the location. I tried to plan it to have good balance so that the players would have a good chance of influencing the outcome. Unfortunately as was often the case, Rarebit screwed things up and forgot to give The Scanner epic admin amounts of life and he was killed off fairly easily. The Cypherites still put up a great fight though. I also designed the event were on Syntax EPN players were around different parts of the city and Shimada would detect a signal and report the "ping" time for it (i.e. the amount of time it takes for the signal to reach a location). We went to 3 points and told the players to triangulate the position. After some prompting, a few of them found the right location near the statue at Mara central and we all went there to get a glimpse of "Morpheus" speaking. I had a few minor characters and helpers which I don't completely remember. I was super mad that Rarebit wouldn't let LESIG liaisons level up fast somehow so that we could put on a wider range of events. There ARE instant one-level items in game, it wouldn't be hard to pass out 50 of those to the liaisons. Imagine what we could have done with that. Instead of the lame spawns of NPCs, you guys could have been fighting level 50 story characters that actually talked to you and acted like real people, and were actually a challenge. Before I resigned I actually offered to use my main character with a name change to be a liaison for the Machines on Recursion, since they didn't have an active one at the time. He said we can't be on the server with our main character. Which I thought was a dumb argument since if I renamed my main character and used it as a liaison, it wouldn't be my main character... Oh well. The lack of assistance and only using liaisons as overglorified messengers ("Hey guys there's a meeting with The Kid tomorrow!") combined with increased lack of time and increased disgust for the situation the game was in lead me to resign from LESIG a little over a year and a half after we had started the liaisons, Early 2006 to Mid 2007. Director's commentary: In the beginnings of LESIG after we had liaisons for awhile, forum moderators (other players) were still allowed inside the LESIG forum. This resulted in several leaks. One horrible moderator, Sneaker, started a mini-flamewar in the LESIG forum because he thought some liaisons were RPing "too hard" against his faction, The Collective. After I put him in his place, he tried to "moderate" me and after the discovery of more leaks, moderators were no longer allowed to view the LESIG forum. After I returned to the game from a year hiatus, I started to use my old liaison character as a "freelance" agent, making it clear that I wasn't an official part of EPN anymore, but I wanted to put on some small but entertaining events. Unfortunately, that's about when Rarebit announced his departure. I asked him if before he left I could have my Novalux forum account back to put on some events after he leaves, but he said no and then he changed the name of the Novalux character to something else just to spite me one last time. FFFFFFUUUUUUUUU So then I quit the game again. I'm only back to see it die and say goodbye to an old friend that was poorly mistreated. I hope that even with the resources we had, the LESIG players managed to make the game at least a little more fun and engaging for the other players. -Novalux- E Pluribus Neo

But thank you for sharing...I do appreciate you trying to help me save money on buying a lot of jelly beans...but I'm still going to do it. =)
Ughhhhh, this kind of faux-righteousness gives me a headache. This isn't your life. This is a boring video game that's lost everything good about it. We can't do anything about it. Only money talks. 90% of all the people who would ever play this game have either played it and quit (never coming back until the servers are shut down), are currently still subscribed (obviously not many people at all), or have heard so much bad about it that they won't bother. This is all I ask: Be conscience of what you are doing. Someone explain exactly what enticing features of this game would persuade people to try it at this point. Name one thing that would make someone turn away from WoW or EvE to play this game. I challenge anyone to name 10 features that would perform this miracle. You can't do it if you are honest in your assessment. No amount of marketing, jellybeans, or petitions will change this fact. Let me read off the features that were marketed to new players on the game box when MxO was released: Continue the saga Participate in the continuing story of the Matrix and become a part of Matrix history as you play through and experience events directed by the Wachowski Brothers. Explore every inch of the Matrix: Mega City Experience the most realistic urban environment of any MMO. The entire city, including every room of every building, is in play. Master the innovative combat system Defeat your enemies using devastating martial arts manuevers and gunplay. Breakthrough MMO technology produces rich animations and hyper-kinetic battle sequences. Retain character flexibility Escape character regret. Reconfigure your character's abilities and performance on demand. Always stay connected Communicate with people in and out of the game in real-time using AOL Instant Messenger technology. Of those five, two have been REMOVED from the game, and the first two have blatant lies in them. The Bros. never had anything to do with the story or events other than an initial approval of Chadwick's ideas. And we all know that every room of every building is not "in play" even though there are only about 20 unique building structures. Even if they were, who cares, there's nothing to be found there. The only features that could actually be interesting to new players are the combat and ability systems. But without anything to do, they are useless besides PVPing the same 5 people at Mara. And even these systems are still broken. The perfect symbol for this game is to look at the Operative > Soldier ability tree slot for "Multi-fighting." After several years it still says "Ability Description: TBD (To be determined)." Before you waste your money and time, really try to address why a person would want to pay $15/month and use their time to play a game with barely any current players, no further feature development, no further story development, utter neglect and incompetance by the owners, and where of the 6 letters of MMORPG the only one that consistently applies is Online. Don't just do something to do something. Phrack, you know I love you man, but you were feeling the same way as me just a week ago. I think you feel like you have to do something because it's expected of you, or because the players have turned towards you. But I think your talents and money can be put to better use.

Speaking of which, I have a referral code that I can give to people who want to register for the beta on the Global Agenda site. I think if we get a bunch of people to use the same referral code, it increases our chances of getting into the beta together. Also, we should start talking about possibly starting an MXO player based faction for Global Agenda, as there's a spot to specify the name and a website on your profile.

I don't want to see that community die through apathy.
Completely seriously, 95% of the players that made "the community" for me have been gone from this game for a long time. There is no community anymore. There's some people that know each other of course, but without some purpose tying us together (in alliance or as enemies) and something to actually do, there is no community. Trust me man, I felt the same as you... two years ago. It's over. This isn't some symbolic statement, I'm not the Agent Smith to your Neo. This is just a poorly built, poorly marketed, poorly maintained, neglected game based on a franchise I really care about. Plenty of us ignored the signs for a long time, or just put them off to the side and enjoyed what we had. But these latest signs can't be ignored. The last (read: only) full-time developer on the game is gone. The "Producer" of the game has let a month slip by without even popping in to say "hey guys, here's the situation." We've barely even got a "hold on, explanation coming soon." I log on at several different times during the day, different days and it's always population low on all servers except Syntax. As early as this past summer most of the servers would average at population medium in the server browser. This game and the way it's been treated is an embarassment to Matrix fans, and an insult to us who have been here since beta. It needs to end.

Absolutely none! That's why "nothing to lose" is such an awesome phrase. Edit: Oh, and boycotting? HA! Like 40 people (scuse, 39, like hell I'm gonna give up the Agency for you guys) not playing a game is gonna stop the other couple hundred thousand that will be interested at first, then dwindle away slowly like every other MMO out there so that Blizzard staff can stroke their e-peens.
Maybe you misunderstand me. I'm not talking about a boycott. That's silly and won't work. I'm just saying that you all should not waste your money. The economy is collapsing, the dollar is being destroyed, the world is in all likelyhood coming to an end. $15 x 12 months = $180 and that's enough for you to get a really nice hotel room and make sweet love to a fine woman. But if you guys want to pay for a Matrix chatroom I can set one up and I'd only charge you $5 a month. That's a deal at twice the price.

A year ago I would have said hell yes. A few months ago I could be convinced. Even 3 weeks ago I would be pumped up to do this. Right now, I think you're all delusional and should spend your money more wisely, especially with the economy crashing down around us. Hell, it would be a better investment if we all pooled some money together and bought lottery tickets in a state with a large reward but small population and then bought MxO from SOE/WB if one of us won. No amount of red jelly beans will turn this mess around now guys. You've gotta face the truth and either save your money and leave, or enjoy the game while you can. My last day, until the servers shut down for good and I say my goodbyes to the Matrix, is March 15th. If there's some miracle that rejuvenates the game, I'll give it a shot, but I'm not holding my breath and I'm not wasting my money. But I wish more of you would unsubscribe and let our baby die with whatever dignity it may have left.

I wouldn't recommend that.
I DO! It's fun stuff.
