Me too.  If a good portion of the Brood wasn't already committed to playing TOR, I'd totally consider an MxO guild.

Phrack, do you think the game will let you have Rupublic (Jedi, Troopers, Smugglers) and Sith (Bounty Hunters) players in your guild?  I think that would be weird considering the complete separation of the PvE experience and storyline.

Yeah, it's supposed to let Light Side and Dark Side members join the same guild.  It would be wierd, but there's plenty of roleplay methods to support such a thing.

The guys in PN and I have had a few months worth of discussion on whether we should go Jedi or Sith over there... and don't get me wrong, Sith looks very appealing.  Not to mention that it would be a nice change of pace from trying to play the good guys all the time.

Unfortunately, from the research I've been gathering, it looks like there's going to be a sh*t ton of Sith.  So, based on that, I've made the decision that we're going to end up going Jedi (granted, there'll most likely be Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, etc. in our guild).  That being said, for TOR we'll be taking on the guild name of "The Golden Order."

And yes...   the "Golden" bit is a reference to our time as EPN.  SMILEY

Iterator had the Kings of Never, the Nephilix (humble beginnings of the MCDOE), and the Red Code Army.

It also had Scarlet Omega/Prime.

It did not have Gothique.

'Nuff said.

Also, what's a "/sit macro"?

Make sure you have an empty slot on your toolbar in-game and type '/macro Sit /sit'

It'll create a macro that you can click (or type the corresponding hotbar slot number) to activate.

Once we were under the Downtown map, we could just run to the areas we wanted to go.  The Hallways were located just into the water, on the Northeast-most corner of the Downtown map.  The White Rooms were straight East from where you'd spawn, in Center Park...  give or take.

Those stories scared the crap out of a lot of us, so we would go late at night, or early in the morning... times we knew that were outside of typical SOE office hours.  Once we reached the hallways, 5-10 of us would gather in the middle, /sit, and just talk.

You know how people typically gather around a campfire and tell ghost stories to one another?

This was like that... except the stories we told were of the strange and often unexplainable things we'd encountered in the game.  From Assassin sightings, to whatever.

It occurred to me last night that this is one of the things I'm going to miss the most.  That sense of awe and mystery... the perception that anything really was possible, and could happen at any time, when you least expect it.

Now that it doesn't matter anymore - could you tell me how exactly such exploits were done?

In my entire time here, I NEVER got any grasp on any kind of exploit, or how you find out such things at all. It's been a mystery to me all along.

We used to exploit our way to the White Hallways by making ourselves spawn under the Downtown map.

You could do it by going into the Subway at Lamar North, making a /sit macro, using the Subway interface to go to Center Park, and right after you clicked "accept" and your character started running into the train, hitting your /sit macro.

You would sit inside the train, then you would spawn under the Center Park subway.

Eventually they put a lock on our ability to move around, once you're off-map, though.  Now you just rubber-band back to the same spot and can't move.  I imagine that there's a way around that if you talk to the right person, though.  SMILEY

Fen wrote:

The only way I see this happening is illegally.

An emulator for The Matrix Online will never exist.  And yes, Fen, I know you weren't really talking about one, per se, so don't think I'm arguing with you, just pointing out a fact to everyone.

1. Out of all of the emulator projects that I've witnessed/been part of, for The Matrix Online, nobody has been able to get past the whacked out encryption going on in the packets sent between the client and the server.  An inability to crack the encryption means that the process can't be reverse-engineered or duplicated.

2. SOE will also never release the files to the public, in any degree.  Mainly because even if they wanted to (it's not something they're known for doing, for one), it isn't their property to be releasing to the public.  It belongs to Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment.  SOE has just been the baby-sitter for the better part of the last four years.

Now, if you want to look for ways to keep MxO going, there is an incredibly faint, so-tiny-its-almost-insignificant glimmer of hope...  and that is to contact WBIE and talk to whoever's in charge over there about continuing production of The Matrix Online, under a new company's name.

If, by some snowball's chance in hell, they agree to negotiate it with you, you'll only have two real concerns...

  • Covering operation costs; and...
  • Paying Licensing/Royalty fees to Warner Bros.
If it were me, and WB said yes, I'd make the game free-to-play, like Freerealms is now.  I would create new in-game items that could be micropurchased, and I would sell advertising space (in-game billboards, anyone?) to cover costs.

But yeah...

Bottom line?

That's the closest anyone is ever going to come to keeping MxO alive.

I mean I know alot of people who would stil play and surely 2 servers wiped would give ample room for another games data? We are only a small game surely in comparison to the Larger MMO of late?

SINGLE SERVER DEMANDS HERE!

1.  SOE* sees no sense in operating any servers for MxO, because the generated income does not outweigh the cost.

2.  A SINGLE SERVER would require one or more Developers (or manpower) to merge the databases.  If they're not going to pay to keep us operating in any fundamental way, then paying one or more people to come in and merge the databases is out of the question.

(* constitutes Smedley, Walrus, SOE's Legal Department, whoever.)

We can make sure of that.

Whether you like me or not, whether you and I have had issues in the past or not, if you've known me at all, then you know the things I've done to try and entertain this community.  From the events I've held on Recursion as a member of Pluribus Neo, to the little bit of time I spent as Liaison Officer Zeissman, to Algorithm: Black, to the Turf Wars event series.

I love this place, as much as any of you do.

While I have no love lost for SOE, it honestly does hurt me to know that this place is going to disappear.

And since the announcement was dropped... I've been approached at least a hundred times over, being asked things like "Do you know of an emulator in development?" and "You have to have something up your sleeve... what is it?"

Truth be told, I've had nothing up my sleeve.  But I do have an idea...

If you remember the Algorithm: Black event, then you remember that there were a number of ARG-style elements incorporated into it that brought the feeling of The Matrix to your every day life.  From anonymous text messages on your cellular phone, to receiving clues in the mail.  So here is what I propose:

Project Slumber: An ongoing MxO-based Alternate Reality Game, set to begin after the conclusion of The Matrix Online.  It will pick up where the story of MxO leaves off, and it will build upon it, all in a real-life setting.  You will play the part of the character you've built here, and you're more than welcome to invite others who are unfamiliar with MxO to participate.

What is it exactly?

You'll have to experience it for yourself to find out.

Can you help out?

Sure, if you're interested.  I'll be accepting applications for various positions that I'll be detailing in another post, in this thread, very soon.

How do you participate?

Well, it's an opt-in process, for now.  In the future, I hope to build a website, with forums, and so on that will eventually act as a base of operations for the project.  I will, in the meantime, be running an IRC channel on the irc.mibbit.net IRC network, where you can hang out and converse with other members, until a full website is available.

Until then, to opt-in as a participant in this project, send an e-mail to projectslumber@gmail.com with the following information:

  • Your Full Name (First and Last)
  • Your Redpill Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Cellular Telephone Number
None of the information will be shared with anyone else, and will only be used for the purpose of contacting you, in your participation with ongoing events.

You know... what I would really like to do (but I severely lack the skills/talent), is put together a website-based RPG based on The Matrix.  Something along the lines of the "Tactical Simulator" on this website.  As long as it was purely fan-based, I don't think any legal issues would arise.

It'd be a place where we could register accounts, continue our RP, and still implement some form of progress... but maybe that's just another pipe dream.

I miss fighting for goals that everyone said were unacheivable.

Whether that was in-character, as Phrack, or here on these forums, with efforts to save the game.  I can't count how many times I've been approached by various people in the community, and told how much they admired me for my dedication... however stupid my dedication may be.

I learned early on that when you set your goals beyond your reach, it will get disheartening after awhile... but any steps you make which progress toward them will be so much more exhilerating.

There's been a hole inside of me since I got word that we were entering the final-two-month countdown... and I don't see if healing anytime in the near or distant future.

Community General Discussion Is this the end of the Matrix Franchise? Re:Is this the end of the Matrix Franchise? Phrack 0 06/01/2009 06:33

My personal opinion on the subject, however dreary it may be?

Kiss it goodbye, boys and girls.  This was the last bastion of a franchise we've all come to know and love... and it died a slow, painful, degrading death.  The Wachowski Brothers don't care about this intellectual property anymore, or they'd have had a larger influence on it than they did...  no, Speed Racer and the Superman reboot is where their heads are now.

The closest we'll ever get to keeping this franchise alive, is by producing whatever fan material we can.  Fan websites, fan fiction, maybe even a fan-based RPG.

We're those abandoned kids that passed from one crappy foster home to another... and SOE was the last one we were going to get.

Whatever we do from here on out is on us.
