They actually did that on mythbusters so I can vouch for this!

With the fairly simple geometric shapes that make up the mario world in those games it's easy to put that onto anything the way they've done it...
Seems like they've just randomly placed pieces from the game wherever they saw fit and I don't really recall the sky having that kind of japanese sun/clear cut color change in the game... Might be wrong though.

Still.. I got more of a bioshock feeling from it than mario. =P
