When it comes to this, I honestly don't know what to think. I'm a firm supporter for whatever seems like human evolution (things like growing new limbs and body parts from stem cells, robots, et cetera), but who's to say that putting this kind of power in the hands of any parent is something worse than contemporary trendiness... I mean, eyes and hair color are purely aesthetics, but the way we evolve--survival of the fittest, dominate genes, et cetera. My problem comes from the fact that I believe fighting our most antagonistic diseases and viruses with genetics is something good, while this... I am not sure.

I'll be listening to it, but I thought I'd post a nice two-part, 11-minute video explanation on Youtube: The Crisis of Credit Visualized [Part 1] [Part 2]

Thank you. It is a digital painting in Photoshop, yes... I'm now in love with digital art after all that experience with photomanipulation and signature making.

Indeed, 'twas a great reference photo. Originally I had planned to flank Mr. Chamberlain with Morpheus and Seraph (like on the game's boxart), but I don't have enough time realized that Rarebit is/was the lone puppeteer behind those simulacrum. Perhaps soon I will make such an alternate version.

I tried the demo on the PS3 and was thoroughly disappointed. It just didn't feel tuned at all, and nothing was subtle.

It's sort of lame how the topic of this thread is composed in the past tense. How about what does it mean to you? Because the years some of us have put into this game aren't going to transform or anything even after the very end. If anything, MxO is highlighted in my mind for its community of undying angst. But it is more than that. Even now, it plays upon my psych and imagination. All the magic tricks have been laid down, and we can all speak less seriously, but I've got to say... there hasn't been a game that has enjoyed my attention for as long as this one. And there probably never will be. The Matrix Online represents a time in my life where I was an empty slate. I was fiery, I had all of these dreams, and I was real nerdy for The Matrix. I think that this place was a type of playground. I loved being ironic (ex. my character being a hardcore Machinist while my actual ideals are saturated with free will), and here was the first "place" where I realized true paradox... and all of that played into the fiction. The Matrix Online enabled us to sort of mutate the original story with our own visions. Now I sort of understand why they killed off Morpheus so quickly. Well, besides all the excellent experience I had typing madly to other fanatics, MxO lead me through a crash course in Photoshop. Seriously. I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for all the signatures and "enhanced images" I made for the RSI forum. Of course, I regret that none of those images can be included in a portfolio, but anyways... Good stuff.

As for the resolution... believe it or not, that image is at the resolution the original contest called for. Perhaps when Walrus and Rarebit wake up tomorrow they could figure out the specifics (or they can sit back and laugh).

I was thinking that, while he's been the developer with the most facetime in the History of MxO™, and aside from penning all the story material and more after Mr. Chadwick abandoned us, Mr. Chamberlain doesn't have a "signature" in the game. The other developers will always have their avatars and such to mess around in the virtual world, but how will Rarebit be remembered? Through an update which holds a bunch of NPC masks? Please. I propose a randomly placed billboard. I got the idea when I googled my name and rediscovered this on a French MxO fansite:
It's my entry from the long-dead billboard contest held back in I have no idea. All I remember is that I got a free shirt and a copy of the game out of it, and I think a free 30-day subscription card too. I still have that shirt. My idea is probably foolishly vain. I'm sure that Rarebit has some elaborate server-crashing plan for his last day for us to remember him by, but I just thought... how about one from the fans?

Three years later. I got the message from El that Rarebit is leaving, then I sat and read every post in the other thread. Originally, I wanted to post this in there, but seeing as this will be the most expensive forum post I'll ever write, I decided to perform the greatest thread nerco ever, too (reason being that I can't post in any Broadcast Depth thread for some reason). There's only a few minutes left until I must depart for my philosophy class (where I have a professor who obsesses over The Matrix, too, how fitting!), hardly enough time to display my gratitude. But I shall. Rarebit! What more can we say? You inspired me. You inspired us all. Go ahead and close this thread. It has served its purpose.

Are they the Sony headphones that are $15? Because they mass-produced (lawl, massively) those mothers, I think. I have bought two total and my second pair has lasted quite a long time. The first pair got me down not because they stopped playing in one ear but because the right earphone made a weird static noise whenever there was bass in a song.

The monitors presented much more than the waterfall of information that is the Matrix. He saw diagrams, graphs, and what appeared to be a screen scrolling through normal, uncoded text. Staring long enough, sitting there in the tilted Operator's throne, he could make out bits of conversation in the text. Various times it looked to be the same type of message over and over again as if in response to the seemingly random jitters of text every other refresh. An automated customer service system in real-time.
Another monitor showed him partially completed spreadsheets of data, another had a lengthy essay of sorts left unfinished. The Operator's station seemed to be more like the technological nexus of a mad scientist's laboratory than anything else.
For an hour he gazed on all of it; a secret horde of complete insanity and utter genius sprawled before him on the chimera screens. The keyboards in front of him barely registered as tools. He typed and tapped upon the array as if it were the compilation of deft nerve endings and he the electrifier, or the administrator of a brave lumbar puncture. All the knowledge lay before him of what could have been... but how could he be sure?
The trinity of screens he had first ignored now floated back, caught by his eyes. It was amazing that the topsy-turvy world of contorted steel and wire abandoned his consciousness in the wake of this burning desire to understand, to return, and to revive himself. If, that is, he could find out what exactly that meant.
Fingers at first pressed some keys, some letters, here and there like weary chess pieces. No longer pumping out commands in a two-dimensional feedback loop, they had to cautiously warm up to the occasion. After all, who knew how long it had been since he transmitted real communication to anyone or anything?
He typed a message to those inside the Matrix...
