Those of you reading this, who follow the forums closely, also tend to be those who have most assiduously followed the daily events and weekly missions, and are perhaps the most strongly affected by these changes. While I cannot hope to replace perfectly the types of content you've seen in the past, I'll at least try to describe briefly the two main reasons why I believe this change is both necessary, and the right thing to do for the overall health of the game.

If you read the forums, you've probably read this passage from Rarebit.

I'm one of those people, described by Rarebit. Contrary to popular belief, I really only played the game to interact with the story. I've done a lot of things in the past, but I've always been a fan of the Matrix storyline. Of course, since the continuation of the story was using the medium of an MMO, I was drawn to it.

The fact that this game had Live Events every week-day seperated this game from the others. If I wanted to sit at my computer and grind quests all day by myself there's 15 other MMOs to do that. I just wanted the story, and while not every Live Event was perfect, just interacting with the Storyline characters was enough to keep me paying $15 a month; to see the storyline unfold.

It seems now since this "New Approach" everything is a shadow of its former-self. We still have LESIG supposedly, but why bother communicating with them, because they're no longer outlets of information anymore. Apparently, there are rare "ghost" LEs that occur every once and a while during a blue moon. Now we have "Org Meetings" which are just Q&A sessions that all end in, "That information is classified.." and "Server Parties" which honestly are boring as all get-out. Of course the cinematics have returned, but no offense to Rarebit, I would rather have the old system back than these cinematics. They're great, don't get me wrong, but they only reinforce the fact that the only 'story progression' we're getting is every 6 weeks along with more clothes or something.

It just seems that Rarebit is striving to make this game more like a "quest grinding MMO with content" where'd you have something to go do if there was no live event, but let's not kid ourselves. The Matrix Online has never been a game where everyone would PvE at level 50. It was either RP, PvP, or when the occasional patch came out everyone would PvE for the small amount of new items. In the mean time (which was the majority of the time) we would have story-continuing Live Events/Missions that would tide us over.

When I mean "us" I guess I mean the "minority" of players who played this game for the story, and not the items or new constructs. I didn't mind the various drawbacks there was to keep up the old-system that produced a thriving storyline (albeit the twists and turns its had), but if the Live Events are gone, then I suppose I'm gone.

Mount & Blade

Let me just start you off if you're reading this, by saying that this is a medieval game. The combat is medieval, real time, and not from an RTS view. Basically, if you've ever played a Total War game and have always thought about taking control of one of your guys in a heated fight, well this is probably the game for you.

If you're looking for high-end graphics, online multiplayer, an extensive storyline, all in a game designed by a well-renowned developer studio, then this isn't the game for you.

I was a little sceptical at first buying this game, but I actually found it more enjoyable and taking up more of my time than Call of Duty World at War did when I was waiting for Left 4 Dead.

---

You begin the game by creating your own character, which has extensive settings for you to create your unique character in this world. You can then choose a backstory for your character which will play into your beginning stats. For the sake of this review, I'll be using my original character.

Here's about 1/4 of the game world from the highest perspective's point. If you've ever play a Total War game, this would be your "tactical map". Here you can choose where your character goes, be it through the country-side, to a city, to a battle already in progress and the like. As you can see, you have the options to..

Camp - Basically settling in one spot and while you wait time is sped up. You have a few options like giving the option to recruit prisoners to your party, choosing a book to read while you wait which will in turn increase your skills, retire from the game (to see how well you did overall) but the main idea behind it is to just wait. Over time soldiers/heroes in your party will receive experience just from regular training (albeit it not being as potent as actual combat).

Reports - This is basically your go-to for when you want to see your standing in the world. There are five different factions in the game, all kingdoms that really only vary via units/strategy implemented through combat. It will show your renown (basically a stat that is only rewarded to you through battles where the odds are against you, the higher your renown the higher your party's morale will be) as well as your standings (-100 through positive 100) with these factions are. Generally if you're at war with them, they hate you, if you're an ally towards them, they will be loyal towards you.

Quests - These are basically what they sound like. There are various Lords in the game. They act like medieval day's Barons. They are the only people in the game that are able to raise armies under a single banner. The Lords will serve under a King, which basically makes up that kingdom. A kingdom is nothing without its kings/lords. Anyways, you can ask Lords if they have a task for you, and then these quests will appear in your Quest log. Basically like any MMO you've ever played. SMILEY

Inventory - This is important, because not only does it show what you're wearing, but it also shows what you're carrying (basic stuff, amirite). This is important, because in order for you to survive you're going to need food. If you want people to follow you and fight with you, you're going to need to get more food. Food is easily attainable pretty much at any village or any city.

Party - This is the party screen. Here you can see who's in your party, including heroes (named soldiers that have skills), regular soldiers, prisoners, and of course yourself.

My character's name is Arthael. I have a few named characters which are more effective as they level up than any other unit in the game (willing you equip them with decent gear, yes, you can equip them much like yourself). I didn't just pick "anyone" though. I have two combat-oriented members, Firentis & Lezalit, a medic, Jeremus, a trader and finally a tracker, Marnid and Borcha respectively. They all have their own personal skills that can be levelled, much like your own. This is useful, because there are plenty of skills that are considered "party" which benefit the party as a whole. Since your character can't be the best at everything, simply because as you level it becomes increasingly longer to level up again, having these other character specialize in certain fields like being a surgeon or a tracker, makes your party more efficient by tenfold.

But, this is all just numbers and boring stuff, right? I mean, the title's called "Mount & Blade" so let's get into the combat, shall we?

Right now I'm a Lord with a fiefdom to the Swadia kingdom (Orange Text Territory) who is allied/neutral with all of the other kingdoms except the Vaegir kingdom (Green Text Territory). So, here's myself about to assault the castle of Radoghir. I've been at war with the Vaegirs for some time, so I've shrunk their territory down exponentially, so of course they're running out of vacancy at their castles. ;P The odds are little against me, considering I've only got 30 or so soldiers, but given the fact it's on the easiest settings and I have the best soldiers my kingdom has to offer, let's put our mettle to the test, shall we?

Well it wasn't long before I had forgotten that I had already made peace with the Vaegirs, thus making Swadia a lot like Sweden. Well, for the sake of this little review we'll go around slaughtering Vaegir Farmers. Maybe that will make them a little angry.

Wow, they died ridiculously fast I could only get two combat screenshots. lol

So anyways, it would seem that the village from once those farmers came, did not like that I slaughtered innocent peasants from their village. They were now hostile too me, so I decided to go and plunder/raze their village. Since I had quite a following with me, they gave in. This is me looting their village free of charge. (Note: Selling this at a local city gives you quite a bit of money. Granted it's the way of the bandit, but it's very profitable.)

Now that I've successfully angered the Vaegir Kingdom, it's now time to beside Radoghir Castle.

One built siege tower later, and it's time to scale the walls.

Or, not. It would seem that Lord Doru has decided to ride out and meet our calvalry that's besieging his castle. The only way to settle this arguement is by the blade, since for me surrender is not an option.

Alright, so the only casualty that occured on my side was Jeremus, our medic ironic enough. Their entire force was wiped out (given easy settings) and finally the assault on their castle has begun. Instead of hiding on their walls, they sally out to come fight us face to face.

The battle is won in our favor. Now begins the siege.

The siege tower to our left will help us assail the walls. Of course we're pelted by arrow fire and the like, our soldiers stand strong. For the defenders, this is no longer about honor but a matter of life and death. If we breach their defenses, the survivors will be slapped in irons while the lucky ones will pass on to a better place.

I'm the first person going into the fray, ready to cut swathes of my lightly armored foes.

With the walls cleared of the Vaegir archers, the remaining soldiers nestled in the castle have come to retake what was once ours.

Finally, the keep is ours.

The enemy Lords sing our praise.

Since he is a viable enemy in the future, I will keep him under lock and key. One less general I have to worry about. Finally, the castle is taken for the glory of Swadia.

That's the magic of Mount & Blade.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Death Effect: Is it really needed? (PvP) Death Effect: Is it really needed? (PvP) Ballak 0 10/03/2008 05:57

The Death Effect as we know it, is basically a debuff that is forced upon you when you die and you're suddenly 15% weaker which will gradually lower over the time of five minutes.

Games today generally try to convey the message, "Dying a lot is bad." by having something negative happen to your character every time you die. Although, MxO is actually one of the first ones I've known besides Runescape, where dying in PvP results in a negative debuff. Why is this even needed? Even in Runescape you don't get a debuff for PvPing, you just get robbed of all your stuff. What I'm trying to say is, the death effect as it is now is basically an annoyance. Why do we even need this? In PvP this is just more of an excuse than a penalty, and no one wants to just take a break every five minutes after they die, so what do they do?

They PvP with the DE, die, blame the DE or one of ten other lame excuses and then recon with a refresh DE timer. Which brings me to my next point, which is the most annoying thing about the debuff is that it does gradually reduce over time, which means when you apply your buffs/title buff immediately out the hardline, they are all reduced by 15%. Then of course you have the choice to rebuff immediately to get higher stats then, or wait with the 15% reduced stats until the DE timer is up then reapply your buffs. Hell, half of the time I forget to reapply my buffs when the timer is up.

Perhaps if you were PvP Flagged and took damage (as if you died a CQ would be rewarded to whomever) you wouldn't receive DE?

I'm not out to just ruin the entire game, I just wanted to make PvP a little less consequential (even though to normal PvPers this really doesn't phase them) and in the long run more viable and fun.

I hate to say it but this looks like it's going to be even worse than Katrina. It's just been strengthened to a Category 4 and is going to hit Cuba's western coast probably tonight or early tomorrow. Then it's on a direct path to the warm waters of the gulf, even predicted to slow down in the gulf which gives it even more time to strengthen, and due to the pressure systems to the east, the hurricane is predicted to plunge straight into my home state, Louisiana, and is on a direct collision path to New Orleans. Although a lot of changes have been put into place to get people out as soon as possible, I feel like there's only so much you can do.

I've fallen in love with this album produced by Immediate Music. If you're a fan of the music you hear in trailers, only to grimace at the fact that you'll probably never be able to hear it outside of the cinema world, for once, in a blue moon, there was a public release by Immediate Music not too long ago which includes some very "epic" Orchestral and Choir music. All of which you can hear for about $12, and iTunes.

For those that haven't noticed already, this is a bug with level 30 ranged players who's shield will take a very long time in which to break using grab. For some reason, it's only with players in that range, and it's strange that you have to switch to power to break it in one hit, as opposed to grab. A minor bug, but just throwing it out there.

10 Re-Use Timer : Interlock Accuracy Boost 20 : 40 IS Cost : D.P.S. 21 : 100% chance of powerless.

The only other move that has a 100% chance to powerless (without states) that I know of is Zone of Powerless/Vector which is in hacker.

Also, the only other move in operative tree that has a 100% powerless chance is Freedom to Joints which is a sneak attack.

This move can be used technically every 3 rounds, and from what I've experienced has a high chance of going through. One move that can be compared slightly to this is Pistol Barrage from the Duelist tree, which has very similar stats except for one thing.

10 Re-Use Timer : Interlock Accuracy Boost 15 : 30 IS Cost : D.P.S. 18 : 40% chance of powerless.

60% chance is a big difference, so why exactly was PRCS made to be so much more powerful than the other move? There's no other ability that I can think of that can be used in interlock so often that has a 100% chance of powerless without a state, probably because there isn't one, not to mention spammed to hell which is annoying because when it does go through, often in interlock you have a move queued, and thus you become powerless'd and even though your move didn't even get a chance to roll you just lose IS regardless.

I mean, everything else is fine about it. But I honestly don't see the problem with lowering the powerless chance to 40% or 50%.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Left 4 Dead Left 4 Dead Ballak 0 05/29/2008 05:27

I'm sure any of you who frequent Valve have heard of this, but this is definitely the game for all of you Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Outbreak fans. Produced by Turtle Rock, the same guys who brought you Counter-Strike, have been producing this game for years (sounds like TF2) and I have to say, they are really going in the right direction with this game. Let me just give you a few snippets from Wikipedia if you've never even heard of this game before. (And just a disclaimer, it doesn't exactly go too far into "gore" (hurr mah intestines be hangin' out) but as you'd expect in a Zombie genre, there is buckets of blood, hell even bathtubs filled with it)

Left 4 Dead is an upcoming multiplayer co-operative survival horror FPS game by Turtle Rock Studios which is, as of January 10, 2008, part of Valve Corporation. The game has been built using Valve's Source engine and will be available on PC and Xbox 360. Certain Affinity is responsible for the Xbox 360 version of the game. Left 4 Dead puts four human playable or AI controlled survivors of an apocalyptic pandemic against hordes of the Infected. Regular Infected are controlled by the game AI, while human players can control up to four mutated Boss Infected with special abilities. The goal of Left 4 Dead for the Survivors is to help each other make it through a level to safety. Infected players must cooperate to stop them.

Also, it comes with this nifty AI director, promising you'll never play the same level twice.

The AI also features a dynamic system for game drama, pacing and difficulty called the "Director". Instead of fixed spawn points for enemies, the AI director places enemies in different positions, creating a new experience each time. It will also balance action and moments of tense calm. When the AI Director feels that players have been facing a particularly intense battle, it will slow down the tide of enemies. After a sufficient lull of action, the director will send more enemies to increase the drama again.

Again, the game tries to keep that balance between realism and fun, so basically things like Friendly Fire are always in effect, but the damage is lowered a bit more when you shoot your team-mate, as opposed to killing zombies. When you lower in health, you find health packs in which you literally strap onto yourself for more health (sort of a new trend, like what's going to be in Far Cry 2).

You can play as four different people. Vietnam Veteran, Innocent Rich Girl, Your Average Black Electronics Salesman, and a Hardcore Biker. Not the most likely of heroes, but these characters have over 1,000 lines of dialogued recorded - each.

So far there's two different types of game modes (and it looks like only two will be ready upon release). One where it's just four players in a server going through campaign mode (each part of a mission takes about an hour and 30 minutes on average) and then there's a "Deathmatch Mode." It's basically the same thing, except you have "Infected" players who plays one of the four boss zombies. The boss zombies appear in both campaigns as NPCs unless they are controlled by players.

The Boomer

A hugely obese Infected that can projectile vomit at The Survivors, blinding them and attracting swarms of nearby Infected to them. When Boomers die they blow up, creating a large amount of damage and exorbitant amounts of gore and viscera, this also attracts NPC infected to the area in which the Boomer exploded. Boomers can also drop from tall buildings into/onto a group of survivors, and once they impact on the streets, they "pop" exploding in the aforementioned manner having the same effect as the vomit attack, this skill could serve as an effective method for ambushing the survivors. (lol at Fat Zombie having a vomit attack and being able to explode, probably marking the goriest part in the game)

The Hunter

An agile Infected who can climb walls and jump over rooftops, similar to 28 Days Later Infected and Half-Life 2's Fast Zombie. If the Hunter crouches for a certain period of time, a meter will fill and it can use its most powerful attack (this was chosen instead of it becoming invisible once backed up to a wall or similar piece of cover, turning invisible, and then pouncing). It can then pounce on a survivor, pinning them down on the floor and slashing at them with its claws, rendering the victim powerless unless The Hunter is killed by a team-mate or knocked off its victim. It is extremely weak, and can only sustain minor gunfire before dying. The Hunter can also retreat, and slowly heal itself. (These guys jump on you, and there's no way you can get them off by yourself (hence teamwork) and man do they have the best animation ever just slashing away at you while you guzzle hoses of blood, lulz)

The Smoker

An Infected with a long, whip-like tongue that can drag Survivors away from their team-mates and use its tongue as an organic noose to strangle Survivors when it is perched on a rooftop. Similar to Half-Life's Barnacle, or Resident Evil's Licker. When in danger, it can leave a haze of black smoke, distorting the Survivors' vision. (Classic take from Pitch Black's creatures, waiting to suck you up from the bottom of a cliff.)

The Tank

A huge, muscular Infected capable of throwing large items such as cars or blocks of concrete. The tank keeps a high profile, able to be heard by the survivors from a great distance due to its loud thrashing while running. The immense strength and toughness of the tank makes it a terrible foe in combat. To prevent the tank from camping away from the survivors for too long, a frustration timer is set when the survivors are not in sight. When the timer runs out, the tank becomes uncontrollable and begins stomping and thrashing giving away its position and becoming vulnerable to the survivors. (This guy looks crazy, honestly you should look it up.)

The Witch

The only mutant infected that will not be available to players. They are passive upon discovery by the players, but react with hostility to flashlight beams, physical contact, and gunfire in the vicinity. It will be able to kill a player in one hit, and has almost as much health as a Tank, making them the most dangerous of the infected. She has the resemblance of average infected, but can be heard crying to give the players a chance to avoid or attack her. The witch will not be included on the easy difficulty. (This guy has been held under wraps so far, and it's exciting to wait for what it will eventually look like.)

Unfortunately though, it seems like this game isn't due out until.. hm, late this year?

A few trailers.

Number One.

Number Two.

Last night I ran a reformat on my hard drive, which resulted in a fresh start with which I was very pleased. Unfortunately, when I started to install my drivers and eventually get my internet connection back on track, I accidentally installed the drivers for my old GFX card instead of my new one. I thought it wasn't a big deal, but when I tried to reboot my computer, it simply would boot and the fans would run, but my monitor received no input, i.e. nothing was happening. I didn't even get my BIOS to run even after a BIOS reset. Alas, I'm at a loss as of what to do to fix it, so plan B is I'm going to clean the computer with an air compressor this weekend, and then ship it off to a local computer tech store. Not sure how long my computer will be in a fix, and if even that, the computer might be dead, so I probably won't be around till I get that fixed. Anyways, later.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable The Problem With Hyper-Jump The Problem With Hyper-Jump Ballak 0 05/07/2008 17:04

A lot of people complain about Hyper-jumping in PvP. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. As everybody knows, there's two things you can do with hyper-jump. Selecting the ability, point-click-jump. In PvP, this is rarely used.

Why? As many of us know, it's precision HJ-ing. You usually go straight forward as well as moving rather slowly, and to watch the camera scroll up a building you want to HJ on leaves you vulnerable for precious seconds you need in PvP. The other technique is simply by pressing Cntrl+Space, which sends you directly up, arching, and landing as far as you hold the two keys down for as well as staying in the max range of your super jump ability.

Why is it that those who Cntrl+Space seemingly always get away? Well in PvP, you generally try to estimate where a person will land. People can jump straight up, or they can do a full jump, or land half-way, etc. The problem ultimately is, is when you go so high up you leave the range of your enemy, so the person waiting on the ground who has you targeted will most of the time, lose his target. Sometimes you'll get lucky, and all you have to do is look up to see where your target is going to land, generally it's easiest to see if your target just went straight up, because obviously he'll come down the same way. Unfortunately, when someone does the entire/half Cntrl+Space jump, you lose the target, i.e. disappearing off your client. The fact that you can do this at pretty much anytime except in IL (hyper-speed/seraphims usually keeps up with a majority of the speed debuffs) it's something that's very hard to counter(nearly every root in the game has a cast timer or is broken by damage *might be all*). Although it's really satisfying when you bust the guy's shield as he HJ's and then lands right where you thought he would, and then destroy him in IL, I just wanted to know if there was any way you could either lower the height at which you can HJ, as well as keeping the same distance you get from doing a Cntrl+Space jump, or any other idea someone could come up with that could be applicable to the game.

----

Okay, because every single person I've seen in this thread basically didn't see what I was getting at, and has degenerated into "LOL LETS TALK ABOUT HEALS, OR MKT, OR ABOUT HOW MUCH ZION JUMPS, AND HE CANT GET CQ, QQ" I drew a picture for all of you. This has nothing to do with anything else other than Hyper Jump/Beta Jump (give or take 20-60 Super Jump pts.)

#1 - The Stickman to the bottom left is where someone is standing before they Hyper-jump.

#2 - The Stickman to the very top is someone who has reached the peak of their Cntrl+Space jump.

#3 - The Stick man at the lower bottom is someone who has performed a Precision Hyper-Jump.

#4 - The Red Line indicates where you will lose your target due to being out of range on your client (only achievable via Cntrl+Space/Precision only when you're trying to go up a tall building)

#5 - The Green dotted line indicates where my proposed cntrl+space would be, where you would achieve greater height than a precision, yet still keep the same distance. You won't get as much air time as the old cntrl+space, but you will stay in range of someone's client who is trying to keep up with you.

#6 - The little messy line hayball at the end of these lines is where obviously you'd land.

There's only two solutions I can think of. You raise the red line up, or you lower the cntrl+space to the green curve.

i.e. Anyone who is actively chasing someone HJing, will most likely be under the HJer, so distance horizontal wide wouldn't really matter.

Now the only *problem* I see with this for those who try to HJ up tall buildings. But usually, excluding the DT buildings, as long as you can scroll up high enough, you have no problem scaling those buildings because the height at which you scroll is your only limit on how high you can jump, i.e. once you scale the building with your camera, you can still jump forward as much as you would if it was level ground.

I honestly don't think it's a nerf, in my opinion.

So I had a bunch of luggables the other day, (and it wouldn't surprise me if it was because of) multiple Smith Virion's on at once. Well I was PvPing a bit and died, and apparently instead of dieing I just decided to stand at attention. o_O I wasn't the only one who saw it either. :o

Hello peoples. Today I've got 3 different auctions. (By the way, the prices for the auctions are for the stack, not the individual bit, i.e. 30mil for 3 Accelerator bits in total. ~Thanks Coro)

    x3 Accelerator Bit - Starting at 30mil. Ending - April 3, 2008 12:00:00 CST

    x3 Deaccelerator Bit - Starting at 30mil. Ending - April 3, 2008 12:00:00 CST

    x3 Runtime Bit - Starting at 35mil. Ending - April 3, 2008 12:00:00 CST

And the special today, well I've got 5 pairs of male (sorry females SMILEY<img src=" width="15" height="15" />) Quicksilver's Gloves. These arn't auctions, but I really need to let these suckers go, and since I've got so many of them, well how about.. 7 mil a pop? Everybody likes'em, everybody needs'em, so why not go ahead and save yourself the trouble of fighting N30 Ag3nts and claiming your pairs now.

And the rules for this thread, since I'm assuming a lot of people will be doing different bids for different items (sorry, didn't want to spam marketplace with teh threadz) I'd like to request that when you post your bids, you post which you are bidding for in your post. If you're claiming Quicksilver gloves, just say so and the first post(s) I see in this thread claiming them I will get those to you ingame as soon as possible for 7mil a pair.

-Quick Note, you can claim more than one pair if you want.

Alright, well after a lot of Data Node farmin'z and robo-destruction, I ended up with an Area K out of it even though I wasn't really going for one.. so it's up for sale.

Bidding starts at 20,000,000$info and the auction will end at exactly 11:59:59 AM CST on Saturday. I have everything needed for it, just waiting to turn it in to the collector. Happy Bidding.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable The Ability To Destroy Portable Signal Boosters The Ability To Destroy Portable Signal Boosters Ballak 0 03/02/2008 22:52
We really, really need the option to break down or just recycle the Portable Signal Boosters because I cannot express how much of an annoyance it is to be looking for the other three luggables, only to happen upon a Portal Signal Booster. Signal Boosters can be in unlimited number and you could go through 30 of those things before you find a luggable you want. So I suggest that we have an option to disable the Signal Booster so that they don't show up on the map when you're searching for luggables, or the option to destroy them. I mean, half the time these Signal Boosters are not even being used. People just do a Box 1 or Box 2 and leave the signal boosters after they create them. I don't even need to load Datamine to happen upon them so often. Granted, they are all reset after a server reset, but jeez, they are annoying as all get out.
