  Zampano left their little camp about half an hour ago, leaving Marcus, ArgentCervus, Leelia and Thibes behind. Marcus was finally fast asleep, half a litre of his self-made spirit had utterly silenced his worries and fears. Zampano had tranquillized Thibes, the bear they had rescued over a year ago. Argent was wounded and could barely move. She needed warmth and so Leelia had tucked her under a blanket right next to Thibes. Leelia put aside her bowl of warmed proteins - she wasn't hungry, she was terribly cold. Three layers of woollen garments were not enough to oppose the Real's harsh grip.

Leelia climbed the Onesimus again, its cold metal skin making her fingers burn, even through her improvised glove-like hand-wrappings. "The world is still angry with us", she whispered as she saw the heavens unload in a blinding flash of lightning followed by roaring thunder. It was hard to make out an incoming hovercraft by either sound or sight: the winds on the surface and the occasional thunder were so load that they almost had to shout to understand each other, let alone the inability to distinguish the blue electric static from the lightning bolts all around.

Leelia let her gaze flow over the vast desert around them and tried to focus. Was that a moving object just over the dune some 2 to 3 kilometres away? It didn't show the standard signs of a hovercraft and even if it would have... how would they know if it wasn't one of their enemies, finishing what the Sapientia had begun? A chill ran over Leelia - they had never thought about this aspect of being ... "rescued". In an instant, she was off the Onesimus: "Marcus, Argent! Wake up! Now!", she yelled and kicked Marcus' heavy boot as she passed him by in hurry.

"Wha.... what's with the panic?", yawned Marcus.
"Unknown object approaching, could be anything - some kind of hovercraft, sentinels - we better get moving until we can be sure."

Marcus jumped and looked for a certain aluminium can. "Damnit". It was empty. He hurried to find the EMP rifle instead - at least that gave him some degree of comfort. His captain had woken Argent and patted the bear: "Thibes... sorry, but we can't take you with us. Marcus", she turned to her operator, "you take her. Follow my lead ... and give me the gun, will you?". Marcus lifted Argent over his shoulder and followed his captain into the desert.

Oh yeah, the "canon" question. Personally, I like the idea of several small supply outposts out there, either neutral or affiliated to one of the orgs. I do not like the idea of several "full-fledged" cities on the surface or below it as I assume the machines would have seen to that.
Syntax Next Renaissance - Syntax Incidents ((Open)) Re:Incidents ((Open)) Cpt_Leelia 0 10/31/2007 09:30
  Time...

from the very day she had embraced the cause of the Oriens Veritas, from the day she had become captain and started recruiting redpills to join them on their way towards an Unscorched Sky under which both man and machine could live together peacefully, she thought about time being one of the few things they had in abundance.

Time...

What little matters a day, a week, a month, even the three years she had spent in the Real after her Awakening when compared to the time it might take to undone what centuries of warfare had inflicted to their planet?

Time...

Yet what was more subject to relativity, to an individual's perception of the moment? Each passing second gnawed at Leelia's conviction, very much like the Sapientia's unforgiving strike had pierced her former home's hull. The wrecked Onesimus lay as a memorial for what she thought would give her strength to survive: a cause. It laid shattered, its remains spread over a fast area, soon to be covered with ash and thus cast into oblivion. The isolated desert was but a mirror, grimacing at her, and she had to realise painfully how vulnerable she was when that which fulfilled her, drove her and gave her a sense of life, was suddenly taken from her.

A single tear smeared the dust on her left cheek. She did not care. There was a time when she did, but she felt too weak to pretend to be strong. 'All defences down', she had to think and patted the cold metal skin of the 'Simus that sheltered her from the ashy winds blowing over the barren lands.

Behind her, someone stumbled noisily over something metallic, followed by a curse that further cut the silence. Zampano who was sitting a few metres across from Leelia moved and looked past her to see what happened to their operator. She also turned and saw Marcus holding aloft an empty metal can."If only it was filled...", Marcus added after he finished his rant and kicked it away. Leelia couldn't help a smile. 'Maybe not all defences', she thought and glanced at her friends.

  So the recent rumours were true - Dragonram was no longer on their side. She never really trusted this somewhat ... erratic program anyway. But luckily some still working subroutine at least gave a warning ... one that -naturally- only increased Leelia's suspicion. Yet another merv.

Leelia shrugged. For her, it barely mattered. The Merovingian had always been a major nuisance that had grown gradually over the last years. The last decades certainly, or centuries for that matter, but that was beyond her worries. The Merovingian and his followers, by the meaning of their very existence, stood diametrically against her own purpose - which was, meanly put, to shut down their home eventually. That, too, would take a century or more to complete, but then, what the Merovingian could do can be achieved by the Machines anytime.

Leelia awake from her short absentmindedness and tuned to Marcus, her operator.

Jack me in!

Wolfess has a point. Other than Loki, Wolfess, Jevex, Havocide, and Defectless, I tend to just skip out on most Player Events because of either elitism, or feeling alienated if I don't read 20+ pages on the forums sacrificing my time inside the Matrix. Some people just can't dedicate the time to read the Next Renaisance because they have RL things to do or would just rather stay in the game because they don't want to miss out on grinding lowbies or attending Live Events.

Couldn't agree with you more about the 20+ pages forum bit, Dibol. Most "server wide" stories I have seen turned into mass-posting with only loosely related posts. It is my experience, that is also very hard to enter an already running story. When my char asks for a brief summary on what is going on (IC) all I get is an OOC "((it's on the forums))".

Just a world wonderer Mars, hehehe.  I wrote a couple articles on Palestine and the crisis in Lebanon, mostly for a small newsletter back at my University.  As far as the Syrians, I wouldn't have gone there, but while on my trip I kept hearing from Europeans and Canadians how beautiful the country is and amazing cities.  There weren't too many Americans in the region, but the few who were there and went to Syria also raved about it.  Mainly, people were saying how friendly the Syrians are.  I went there with another American, we were a bit nervous, but once in Damascus we felt completely safe and at ease.  I think something needs to be understood about Syria.  The people in Syria, and pretty much the entire Middle East, differentiate between Americans and US foreign policy.  They do not blame Americans for the result of our government's policies.  Sure, there may be a few radicals and extremist who might hate all Americans, but neither I nor any American I've met traveling through the region ever encountered them.  For the most part the people in Syria are some of the warmest and hospitable human beings, it's ingrained into them culturally from the Bedouin way of life, wandering through the desert and depending on a stranger's hospitality.  That's the majority of the population, but there's always the few radical fundamentalist.
As for the Syrian government, my question is do they really hate America for our values and idea of freedom or is it our policy in the Middle East and Israel in particular?  While in Damascus, I saw several KFC chains, and a huge Four Seasons hotel where most of the Western expats or businessmen gather.  Isn't KFC an American chain?  The soldiers crossing over to Iraq from Syria may be private militas or followers of a radical cleric, not necessarily supported by the Syrian Gov't, though that's just an assumption.  Another myth I need to expose is that Syrians hate Americans for our Christian values.  13-15% of the population in Syria are Christians, mostly Coptic or Orthodox.  I've asked Christians there if they felt any discrimination because of their religious background, either in the workplace or for education and the answer was a resounding No, they've been treated without discrimination.  One other thing, I've met either current active US military soldiers and non active/retired who have fought in the current War in Iraq, they've been traveling the region as backpackers, not telling people they were in the military of course, but to really get a view of what the people are like.  Most of these soldiers come away with an entirely different view of the people in the Middle East, and one even went to Syria and found it amazing.  The thing is to deconstruct the myths our media builds and to know the people and culture with personal contact.

Atem, this is most certainly the post of the month on this forum! I envy you for your journeys . Keep traveling, I guess the world is definitely in need of more people like you who debunk prejudices.

The more pressing question is ... can there be a negative weight?

A := 'medium'

I think we can agree that A < B.

And let us assume there is a neutral element called 0 with
0 < A
and
0 < B

Hence:
A - B -> B < 0
