At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we take a moment of silence to remember those that have fought and paid the ultimate price for what we have today, and our freedom. Today is the day the first great war ended, 90 years ago, Armistice Day as it is known in other countries. Today we in the Commonwealth all pay tribute to those that have fallen to preserve our way of life. In Canada this includes during the Boer War, the two World Wars, the Korean War, and through peacekeeping missions since, to provide our nation and the world with freedom. Over 100,000 Canadians have given their lives for believing in the freedom we have, they have more than earned, and deserve our respect.
It takes just "A Pittance of Time"
Today in school I'm glad our professors gathered us together, to read the poem of Flanders Field, and observed this moment. I hate to see too many today forget what has been paid, for what they enjoy today.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
- John McCrae
To everyone that gave the ultimate, thank you, our heroes.
