Ocular gritted his teeth as the bottled shattered under his foot. But he kept running. The echo of his dress shoes, slapping against the battered tile floor, reverberated off the walls, guiding his ears down the hallway. His hand brushed against the wall, and when it caught the doorknob, he bolted out into the courtyard. Immediately the soundscape opened up: traffic, voices, wind, his footsteps now muffled in the struggling grass. He was almost to the street when he heard the spattering of a submachine-gun behind him, and dove across the bus-stop bench. Bullets whined pat and around him, some striking the bench, as he rolled up and let off a burst from his silenced Mac-10. Not that he expected to hit them, seeing as he could only fire in the general direction of his attacker. He dashed up the sidewalked, straining for details, barely dodging a few bystanders, who protested, and then screamed as the gunfire picked up again from behind. He bolted across the intersection, vaulting the hood of a sedan whose tires were already screeching on the pavement. Ocular found his heart pounding, the blood-pressure screaming in his ears as he pushed hard down the pavement. Suddenly, his earpiece crackled to life... "Left, now!" He could feel the air tighten around him as he ducked into the narrow alley. Almost forgot about Mica... He found his Operator's skills re-assuring, started to relax just a little, just as he ran smack into a trashcan. An involuntary barrel roll, and he was back on his feet in time to hear Mica say "Right." before he burst out into the street. Ocular cursed out loud as he stumbled against a parking meter. FOCUS! Adrenaline surging, feet pounding, ears and skin searching for data. Data... Suddenly he felt his eyes, felt the data stream. Glimmering green characters resolved themselves vaguely, startling at first, but then augmenting his other senses. This time, when Mica shouted "Right, subway!" he could make out the opening, and managed a nice legslide down the banister into the tunnel. The vision faded, but not before Ocular resolved his objective. He vaulted the ticket stalls, to the dismay of the collectors, and scrambled towards the tracks. The vision gone, he hesitated a moment, till he heard a hydrolic hiss, and slipped through the doors just as they were closing. The inside of the car felt like a tomb, stifling in its lack of echo space. The cars slowly rumbled to life, and Ocular grabbed hold of the ceiling rail. He felt a little trapped. Can't tell ANYTHING over this racket. A static muffled voice announced "Crenshaw Ave" as the next stop. Crenshaw... Blue line, that must have been Hampton station. He strained to pick up details: a newspaper ruffled from the front of the car, someone pressed the buttons on a cell-phone across from him. But the train noise masked the usual heartbeats and breathing that informed him of people. He didn't even know whether his pursuer had missed the train. He tapped his earpiece. "It's clean, Oc, you beat him. Nice railslide by the way *chuckles*. Get off at Crenshaw, the Red line is right across from it. We've got a new drop set-up." Ocular relaxed, and reviewed the mission. It had been a bust from the start, he had smelled the fear, the distrust, from the contact. He had feigned confusion to get out of the apartment, found the elevator blocked by the ambusher. The stairs had been the only choice. Good thing he didn't figure on me going up! Nonetheless, it had been close, and he still had the package in his possesion. He got off at Crenshaw, made his way cautiously to the surface. His pursuer hadn't arrived here, perhaps guessed he would go further. He crossed the street, went up a block, ducked down into the Red line entrance. This time, he took out a faked subway pass, and showed it to the clerk, got casually on board. "Take the Villa stop. Blackballer will be waiting there with a car. Make the delivery with him, and he'll drop you off at a hardline." Easy enough. To bad it hadn't been in the first place...

scattered stinging sensations... individual nerve-endings firing to indicate... discomfort... At least, that's how he used to regard them. Ocular ran a gloved hand across his nose, felt the leather warm his skin as it wiped away the drops of melted snow. I could count every single one. The wind gusted sideways, a stiff push, but he had felt/heard that coming. It bit through to his chest where the leather trench was open. He braced himself, and kept walking. It's a dry snow, powdery. Small crystals. Only affect small number of nerves on impact. He smiled a little. Such a funny thing. To put so much effort into details that almost noone would notice. Ocular was one of the few who would, always had. This was the kind of snow he had always liked. Refreshing, doesn't soak you. Almost evaporates after impact. Almost...He wiped away more water from his cheeks, ran a handkerchief across the drop of mucous just forming at his nostril. Two more blocks, then left one. He had counted each step on his journey. 37 steps per block, 12 per intersection. He knew his own stride, his pace, the details of the ground he had walked. He had to. Especially now. I may be enjoying this, but I am not here for fun. I need to practice. A scent lingered across his path. He wiped his nose again, turned his head a little to catch it. Faint... smoky... oh! Of course, the angles right from the church. He smiled again. More details. Made just for people like me? Have to give them credit for being thorough. You'd think they could have skipped things like that, with how few of us there are. Pausing for a moment, he made a full 360. Had anyone been watching, they might have wondered at the seeming stiffness of his movements, his head held straight, his eyes obscured by dark glasses, spotted with rain. He listened intently as he turned. His mind ticked off phenomena automatically. Phone, husky man, flirting woman, Ford Expedition with bad muffler, 5 pedestrians, a police siren at a considerable distance approaching indirectly...
Satisfied of no immediate concerns, he continued. The next intersection approached. The steady drone, the hiss of the tires on the pavement, a thud... Pothole. Will have to be careful of that. The wind paused then returned, buffeting from a new direction, bringing exhaust fumes with it. As he reached the corner, Ocular paused, listened. Traffic was steady on this non-descript street corner in the Slums. He waited. The siren from earlier was approaching... Quickly? He strained through the inconsistent wind, seeking more details. There... engine at high rev's, make that two. Only one siren though... The sound approached rapidly from the left. My side of the street. Instinct kicked in and he took a quick hop backwards. He felt the spray, the rumble of the aging ‘80's Mustang as it bounded out over the curb, the shouts and confusion of pedestrians as it and the police cruiser careened across the intersection. Ocular found himself panting a little, felt the adrenaline surging. That was close. D**n wind, can't gauge things right. He steadied himself, approached the intersection again. His hands in his pockets, He found himself grasping for the extendable cane that wasn't there. He shook his head. Can't rely on that. Glad I didn't jack in with it. For just a moment, the adrenaline made him dizzy. Flicker's of green descended, resting and melting on the street before him, then melted away. He tried to concentrate, tried to bring them back. I just SAW them, I know it, snowflakes on the pavement. No luck, the adrenaline had passed, and the world returned to its visually empty state. He sighed, and crossed the street. At least now I know that color. Green. How long had it been that he couldn't even describe those flashes? He had figured they were visions, but not having any, how could he explain them? Green...Such a simple concept, Color. The first one that I ever saw. He rubbed the collar of his shirt. Though he couldn't see it, he knew it was a deep satisfying Crimson. The Second Color. His mind wandered to those first confusing, euphoric moments. Ocular had no idea what any of it was, but he had known it was vision. The extraction team had found him ecstatic. My blindness wasn't real! Those first dim red moments had become imprinted. So beautiful. He counted out 37 steps and turned left, felt the sickly grass under his feet. The wind pattern changed, slackened as he passed between the Project units. I swear you can feel the poverty. The wind slithered along the edge of a broken window, and shouting came down from four floors up, a quarrel. He lengthened his pace and reached the next street in just 32 steps. Then he stopped. The fluorescent bulb popped and sputtered behind the sign reading "City Phone". He couldn't read the sign, but he knew the sound. He could also hear the distinctive hum of the equipment, and the slight peculiarity in it that signaled a hackable line, and the heartbeat of the man standing next to it. It was dead across the street from him, but Ocular turned right and walked up the street a little ways. Need to get him upwind. Ahh, yes, Redpill. It wasn't so much that the bodies smelled different, but the clothes always smelled new, odd somehow. This one smelled also of gun-oil, but not discharge. The personal odor was not one he recognized. He found himself hesitating. Could be anyone. Could be a Cyph. Could already have spotted me. His earpiece crackled to life. "It's cool Oc, he's a Zionite. The lines clean." This bothered him slightly, but he crossed the street and went to the line, picked it up as it rang.
He opened his eyes, rubbed them. The ship resolved itself, the dull metal grey's were comforting, the heavy silence was not. Well, not really silent, just seems that way. The machinery of ship played its tune, but to Ocular it lacked the richness of detail he would experience in the Simulation. If only I could take my eyes THERE, and bring my other senses HERE. He stretched and went over to Mica's station. " Who is he?" "Grist. Newly awakened, even more than you." Mica grinned. "You did good man, half-way across the slums without a cane or a call. Any luck with the vision?" Ocular shook his head. "Not really. A little... briefly... after I nearly got run over. Guess it's something though..." He shook his head, headed down the hall to his cabin. Edit: added series title to thread, 3/2/09

So.. I want to apologize up front for the fact that this is gonna come across like a book to some people. But reading is good, and if im gonna make an argument, then d*** it, its going to be a good solid argument. -- A couple things happened over the last few days that prompted me to write this. I've been thinking it for a lot longer. First off, the other night, a few faction mates and I showed up at Tab W, and I heard someone comment "The Daniel Institute is still alive?" To this I basically responded "yeah we are... and how many of any other one faction do you see these days?" I basically feel like a lot of factions are running pretty thin on ranks, as is this game in general. The second thing happened this morning. I was helping a lower level mate mission. We ran two mishes and he basically said. "Ok I'm gonna mish by myself now for a while... This is boring. I'm not doing anything." -- So.. with those events fresh in mind, and a thread on population just below, I'm gonna go off for a little while on something I think is a real problem in this game. Despite the general positivity about the nice little community we have here, there is no doubt in mind that the community is shrinking. While I like our little community, I think it could stand to be a little larger, ya know, large enough to actually get a team together, or get some pvp going. The last few weeks have been, well, dead. Let's face it.... These games are more fun when more people are playing them. Yeah, we don't need 8 million players.. but, we need more than this! So why is noone playing? This is a GOOD game, imo. Maybe not perfect, and maybe a little antiquated, but it has some good things going for it. I see several related problems that are affecting this game, and one major solution (that most likely no one will agree with, but that's why this is in General Discussion, so that it can be discussed. The major problem with this game is the fact that it's a little old. The Matrix is not fresh out of the theatres, and the game has run down from its initial heyday. Look around, there are dozens of MMORPG's available, not to mention all the online action titles PC and PS and Xbox, and more games every day. People play video games TO BE ENTERTAINED!! MxO has a LOT of competition. If people aren't being entertained, they are going to go do something else. MxO can be entertaining... the setting is cool, the story is cool, the clotehs and gear are cool, the combat system is VERY cool, for an RPG. But it only works if people are playing. You cant PvP yerself! AND...... You can't really PvP till you hit fifty-_- And hitting fifty is a CHORE.. ITS NOT FUN. My faction has easily had twenty or more recruits in the last six months... almost all of them stopped playing somewhere in the lvl30's. Only two are now in their forties. Now, admittedly, part of that might be that we are a small Faction, so theres not always someone to help, but then, that's part of the cycle, and part of the crux of the problem. It's a nasty little cycle... This game is rigged to make leveling on your own virtually impossible. You must have help form higher levels to advance. But higher levels don't want to spend all their time leveling lower level players... IT'S NOT FUN! So they put them off, or don't recruit at all. Few new players reach 50. And those that already are often move on to other games, RL, etc. The population thus shrinks, amplifying the cycle. Even if a level 50 DOES make the effort to help lower players, many of them are like my mate above... THEY'RE STILL NOT HAVING FUN! Which leads me finally to the title of this topic. -- The bottom line is, if we want more people in this game, the leveling process needs to be fixed. The leveling process we have is based on old notions about MMO's. That old notion, is that if you make a game impossible to play on yer own, it will force you to recruit yer friends to play with you. Im sorry, but this DOES NOT WORK !!! Its not 1999... and MxO is not the only game to play. What worked a decade ago for EQ is not gonna cut snuff in 2008. IF MxO is going to survive, it NEEDS TO BE FUN, which means it needs to be more playable. The only two people in my Faction to hit 50 in the last year were both UNEMPLOYED at the time ( that, btw, includes me >.< and it took us several months of playing the game nearly all day every day to get leveled. Honestly, I was bored, had no money, and nothing better to do, and was willing to do a lot of leveling on my own. How many players are like that? Do we really WANT a game population of the unemployed, and how is that population going to stay stable? It can't. This game need s to be able to appeal to people who only have maybe 5-10 hours a week to play the game. Those people need to log in and have FUN, not slave away on 30,000 missions or whatever it is it takes to get leveled ( I should have counted L) If players could hit 50 in a reasonable time and start enjoying the game, maybe they would stay. Or at least log in occasionally. And maybe if there were more, the 50's already here would have more incentive to stay too. -- Whew, so for all that ranting, ya know, id better have some solution, yeah? Well I do (and I think it's a reasonably good one, if I do say so myself). Leveling needs to be faster, and I see two main ways to do it. 1) the XP value of NPC's should go WAY up... I mean hugely, tremendously, exponentially even, maybe. Think about it... what is the primary thing you do in this game? Yes, that's right combat. Its what people are here for. Yes, IC im a peacenik, but seriously, im not playing to stand around and gab. I want some action, and so does everyone else. So... wouldn't you think that you could get XP from fighting? Isn't this, like, yaknow, Experience? Isn't that what the X stands for? So why do I get way more XP for standing in an elevator than I do for actually fighting an NPC five levels higher than me? Yeah.. that's my point here mainly, and it's the point of my friend who was bored. Since lower level players are often (realistically) going to level on their own, and often WANT to, because its more fun and they learn more, Shouldn't they be rewarded with Experience? The best way to fix this is to make Combat a BIG source of XP. This would make the game SO much more fun and playable. It would make it worthwhile for lower level palyers to actually farm the lower level gang items, the archives, the new box content. At the present that stuff is wasted! It might take like 5 minutes for a level 25 to beat Tengu ONCE.. and get like 60000xp... in the same time, they could stand in a lobby with a 50 and earn 4 or 5 times that. Since they know that, who's gonna bother? And if a 50 is not around to help, they're gonna feel like they are d***in around getting nowhere. So yeah, that's my first big step. If you got a REAL amount of XP from combat, it would make it more fun, as well as being a lot faster to level. 2) Remove the penalty for leveling alone. Cuz that's what it is.... A penalty. If you mish alone at low level, it takes three or four times as long, and you get less XP. Again, how are you gaining MORE experience by letting someone higher breeze thru the mission for you? That's just... gah! So, my though is that ALL mishes should pay out NORMALLY at the rate they now do if a 50 is with you. Always. The benefit of having a high level along should only be that they make it easier to do the mish, NOT that they boost the XP output. -- To me, these things work on a lot of levels, but the primary points are these. If they could level on their own, without help, more low level players would stay with the game. If they were having fun kicking NPC a**, AND getting Xp for it, more players would stay in the game. If more people stay in the game, then more people play the game. We get a POSITIVE cycle, instead of the negative one we currently have. Furthermore, if level50's could enjoy being level50, and not have to worry about running around helping all the new people, THEY would have more fun, and would stay with the game. And this is basically what I want to see.. MORE PEOPLE.. HAVING FUN! Are we ever going to be WoW? God I hope not, but it would be nice to have something of a population on more than one server. So with all that said (finally, they all groan), some FEEDBACK!! Tell me to "F off" or "amen" or "I got a better idea" Please? So that maybe this will reach the consciousness of the Power's that Be. I realize its kind a long shot, but I just think this game needs a stiff shot of health booster, and this is the main problem I see. Thanks for hearing me out psilody

I thought i saw with the recent big Gun Update that the useless "Armor Piercing" tags were going to be removed from the guns in the game. They are still on such items as the Lancet/Needler/Stinger, Chastity, The Party favor, Heirloom revolver, and Elmore's Automatic. I am also curious if these items have been "re-balanced". One presumes that the Armor Piercing was originally a feature that enhanced these guns. Since it is no longer functional, was any change made to compensate for this loss of value? As example, it appears to be the only upgrade on the Chastity Rifle, other than expanded range. On a related note, there is still at least one ability, Concealed Shot in the Sniper tree, that lists Armor Piercing as a feature. This should be removed, and the Ab rebalanced if neccessary. Any other weapons or abs out there that list this?

Here I am with yet another silly gun question Is there any difference in combat between dual and single weapons that have the same base damage/range? I have been assuming no, and that you merely need duals for certain special abilities. But I've made bad assumptions before, hehe. Anyone have a definitive answer to this?

Another dumb question... I've always assumed from the description that the Sharpshooter Ab removes a penalty for firing at an opponent who is in IL with Someone Else. A Factionmate recently stated that it removes a penalty for using Ballistics while you are in IL yourself. Is one of these true, and if not, what does this ab do? Thanks!

This may seem like a dumb question, but I've asked a number of people in game, and no-one seems to know... What exactly does Armor Piercing do? I presume that it reduces an opponents Resistances, but... Does it completely Negate them? or is it just partial? If its partial, how many points of Resistance does it remove? If anyone knows, I would greatly appreciate an answer

K so... I've only been lvl50 now a coupla months, and I'm just starting to screw around with PvP. Naturally this has led me to examine diffenrent ways of improving my skills, and someone mentioned clothing macros, so I went and looked up a tutorial. Amongst the comments in this tutorial was one claiming that changing clothes without resetting your LO is an exploit, and quite frankly, I'm stunned... Does anyone not do this? I'm not talking a whole sale outfit switch in Pvp, but I've deffo changed clothes without changing LO's. I guess I don't understand how this even works... I ran a test yesterday, and didnb't see any sign that the system was retaining clothing buffs when i switched items, but i was just standing around at a HL. So is this something that only happens in Combat? Is it invisible, like it generates buffs that you cant see in yer status? Is it all buffs, or just some? In short: 1) How do avoid this? 2) How was i supposed to know this is an exploit? I did a search and i couldn't find any articles on the forums explaining whats considered exploiting (maybe i just set my search parameters wrong) 3) What else mught i be doing thats regarded as an exploit, and i just don't know it? (I'm not even gonna ask why it hasn't been fixed) Anyone who has some insight here, I would greatly appreciate it....

I would like to see some minor (hopefully) additions/changes to RP items in the game. 1) It would be cool if there were luggable versions of the items available from Prop Vendors. Many of these items are already effectively luggable in missions (i.e. if your invetory is full, a mission item will drop to the floor. This would facilitate theri use in Player RP's, allowing you to leave clues, drop valuables, etc. 2) Some items are mysteriously (at least to me) absent from the list of available Props. Im thinking specifically of Red and Blue pills. These would be really useful props for some Rp's 3) It would also be cool if you could get a Blank Mission Ticket. This would open up an area for use in an RP. Obviously there would be no XP,info etc. However, it would again be cool if there were usable containers in the mission, so that items could be placed for players to make drops/pickups. Ok so my own critique first. 1)yes this could lead to people leaving worthless luggables all over the place. I presume theres a way to time these out so that they don't sit around forever, but if not, well...2)C'mon! this should be easy3)This has some potential to interfere with running standard missions, as there are limited spaces for mission floors in a given area. however, the population of this game is so light right now I cant see this being a major issue. Any thoughts here? It's not like im asking for some radically new thing, just stuff that facilitates Player RP's.

This thread is intended as a civil discussion of the current situation. I am initiating it, because, quite frankly I don't fully understand it, nor how we got here. I am going to post some questions and comments, with the hopes that those with a more full knowledge will answer and engage in dialog. As such, please feel free to express your position on these issues, but try to refrain from anger. There are plenty of other places to vent your feelings. What I am looking for is a discourse on the facts of this situation. The main facts I would like to ascertain have to do with the Truce itself. The fact that it is over does not change my questions, nor their relevance, at least to me (and I belive others as well). so... 1) What were the terms of the Truce to begin with? Does anyone know? As Zion has apparently broken it, it would be nice to know exactly how. 2)A related question: How was the truce negotiated in the first place? While it is clear that somehow Neo managed it, does anyone know for certain what bargaining chip he had with the Machines? Have they revealed this information? It must have been considerable, as they were within hours of wiping out Zion completely. And i am not refering to speculations here. We all have our ideas, but none of us were there with Neo when the arrangement was made. I am talking explicitly about what information the Machines have delivered regarding the Truce and its formation, as they are the only ones who possess it. 3) What is the level of involvement between the Machines and Cypherites, Zion and EPN? Because if the rumors are true, then the Truce ended long ago, and I'm still not sure who ended it. 4) Why was there absolutely no discussion or negotiation regarding the recent end to the Truce? It would appear that a unilateral decision was made to end it. Although the answers to the previous questions affect this. These are my questions. Clearly, most of them should be addressed directly to the Machines. I would still be interested in hearing others ideas, especially Machinist Operatives who may be privy to some of this. My purpose in asking them is to encourage open dialog, and hopefully new peace talks. There are many people and groups talking about it these days. While it may be helpful to form new groups or organizations to promote peace, it would also be critical to bring the party's that already exist to the table. Thank you.

##Establishing Secure Communications Link Please Wait....## .. ... .... ##Secure Link Established##
//Incoming Transmission// //Transmission:in-crypted// //ID: psilody: ********** //
##Connection Established## Greetings Fellow Operatives The following is an analysis I have been developing on my own for quite some time. It concerns the relationship between Machines and Humans, especially in regards to our potential use as a power supply. I am not aware of any one else having already developed a similar analysis, but it may be that someone greater knowledge has already addressed this issue. However, I have not yet found any evidence in Zion archives that this is the case. Furthermore, The Merovingians recent investigations on the subject suggests to me that it may be have become an area of increased interest. Even as a Redpill, I was always fascinated with the workings of our Universe, especially of physics and biology. My *hobbies* in my former life led me to an interest in brain chemistry, and by extension biological science and the physical nature of reality. Of course, in retrospect, all of the information I gleaned within the simulation itself must be regarded as suspect. However, I took it upon my self to find out whether our own scientists in the Real had corroborated many things that I considered "scientific facts", And to my surprise found that largely they had. I would speculate that it was far more efficient for the Machines to copy books we had already written, than write entirely new ones. This does not leave out the possibility that things may be edited, but my Real experiences seem to confirm that the following is based on a valid scientific footing. To start with, there are laws regarding the behavior of energy in our universe, such as the Laws of Thermodynamics. These laws state, among other things, that energy in our universe can be neither created nor destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form to another. We can create electricity, but only by transferring it from some other source, which in turn was also recycling it. Zion, for instance, draws its electricity from GeoThermal sources. The Machines supposedly draw theirs from us, human beings. However, in order for humans to produce energy, they must in turn draw it from somewhere, and that somewhere is food. It is purported that the Machines fed us (feed bluepills) our dead. While this is certainly true (as the Machines are quite efficient), there is a problem here with the quantity of food thus produced. Think about like this: How many bowls of that goop do we eat a day? Two, three? While calories would be more accurate, lets simplify and look simply at mass. I would say I probably eat at least a half pound of food a day. In a year, that would be 180 pounds of food! How much does the average human weigh? This may be hard to determine for the pod-bound, but the average clearly can't exceed 200 lbs. As such it would take one dead human every year to feed each live human. This leads to population dynamics that are impossibly unstable. Think about this: If the Matrix started with 1000 adults, 500 would have to die the first year to feed the remainder, 250 the second year, etc. In ten years noone would be left.Even if we count births, and even if there were 500 a year, they are babies lacking sufficent mass to contribute significantly. And by the time they are ten, all the adults would be dead! So, In order to have a stable population within the Matrix the machines MUST be feeding us something other than our own dead. In fact, it seems probable that MOST of the food comes from another source.If that is the case, it begs the question: If the Machines have the energy to produce that much food, WHY DO THEY NEED US?? The ramifications of this analysis, if true, are obviously considerable and diverse. At this point we could only speculate, and wildly at that. Yet perhaps it is time to investigate this possibilty. Certainly, the Merovingian believes thi is the case. As it could change the entire relationship between the various Factions, I feel it must be explored. I hope that this report will serve to catalyze research and action in this area. Thank you for your time and consideration End Report //Transmission Ended//
