Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone.

I want to include all of the Neighborhood Contacts, their backgrounds, and possibly their storylines.  However, Sugar Shack's MXOResource page for this appears to no longer work.  Anyone have ideas on where I could pull this info?  I've done a bunch of the contact missions already.  Thanks.

Community General Discussion You know what I'm going to miss? Re:You know what I'm going to miss? Theorydust 0 06/03/2009 16:03

  1. I'll miss the excitement from way back, during my first event.  I jacked in and found that the Complete Corrupted were attacking.  There was something just so awesome about seeing a bunch of us running to the same location and mission in mind.  Then we got there, and it Corrupted madness.
  2. Shortly after joining my faction, the Winter Brood, when we confronted the Assassin on a rooftop in Sobra Shores.  I was only level 19 at the time, so he'd run by me and I'd die.  But it was still awesome to have confronted him and at least try to fight him.
  3. The series of events when EPN thought Morpheus was coming back... in fact, the first event when the (fake) Morpheus appeared, and we thought it was really him.  That was exciting.
  4. The end of Beta... when the Machines were blowing up the hardlines and telling us that our presence was no longer going to be tolerated in the Matrix.  Fighting Agents that were my level, killing one, and then seeing him respawn at the hardline and come right for me.  Like he was pissed.  That sent chills down my spine.
  5. The Sleepwalkers event.  Say what you want, there was something insane about the Matrix being under seige by the blue-jeaned extremists.

Hello all,

As MxO is coming to an end, I thought that I would throw this out here, here in the General forum.  For the past couple of years, I have been working, on-and-off,on a document that is an archive of the stories, locations, and characters from MxO.  The main portion a synopsis of the storyline, from start to finish, but there is a lot of supplemental material I'd like to include.  This information has been culled from various sources across the 'Net, and I have done my best to include credit where it is due.

I wanted to get from people is feedback on it.  It's obviously going to be given away from free.  But I want to see if people like how it's laid out, if there is more information that they would like to see, etc.  Bear in mind that this is not a complete version, yet.

The PDF file is about over 1MB right now.  You can download it here:

Thanks.

I can't believe the end is coming.  This was my first MMO.  I remember beta, the rocky early weeks after launch, and a ton of memories since.  I haven't been on in a while, but re-subbed for the finale.

Thanks, MxO.  It's been an interesting ride.

Community General Discussion Was Neo's Body a MacGuffin? And a Few Other Long-Standing Questions Was Neo's Body a MacGuffin? And a Few Other Long-Standing Questions Theorydust 0 10/09/2008 22:24
First of all, MacGuffin (found here) can be described as "a plot device that motivates the characters or advances the story, but the details of which are of little or no importance otherwise."

Way back in Chapter 1.2 (and seen in the cinematic) and in the MxO game manual in the box, the refusal by the Machines to return Neo's body sparked Morpheus' actions and the events that subsequently lead to his death.  However, since his death, Neo's body has been all but forgotten; but the question always remained, "What happened to it?"  And thus begs the question:  was it ever going to be revealed what happened to it?  At this point, it's been almost 4 years.  I'm curious if plans changed to reveal this or if the intention was to never touch upon it again.  If it is the latter, then it leads to two more questions:

  1. It is mentioned in the Assassin's Memoirs that the Assassin was denied recycling Trinity's body, and that it had an unusual device connected to her neck / cranial jack.  Again, this mystery has not been touched upon again.  Why is that?  Another MacGuffin?
  2. Around Chapter 6.2, the remnant of Neo's RSI was placed in Westview in the basement of that fight club.  IIRC, Rarebit had stated it was requested by Chadwick, and I had thought something was planned for the "body."  Yes, a couple of years later, nothing has come of it.  Why is that?
Anyone have any thoughts on this?  Is anyone else curious?

Love it.  I'd rather have permanent content than Live Events that only a select few can reach.  One of the biggest flaws in the game has been the mission system, which has always been a poor substitute for a true quest system.  This is probably as far as they can go to rectify it, and I'm for one not upset to see the old-style missions go.

Not thrilled about the Cyph / EPN orgs being dropped, though.  This system seems *ideal* for finally giving them some quest love.

Bring it, Rarebit.  Quests FTW.

This kind of got buried in the "complete storyline" thread, so I'm starting a new one.

Basically, this is something that I started a couple of years ago.  I have been compiling a storyline archive of MxO, from resources such as MxOstory.com, Rarebit's summaries, and mission summaries here.  It features Chapters 1 to 11.1, and is supposed to serve two functions:  one, for a newcomer to the game wanting to know what's happened so far, you can point them to this PDF and say, "Here you go."  Second, with the information across so many different sites and places, I wanted one central document that contains, essentially, the "history" of the Matrix Online, as the story is so depth it merits saving, in case the game were to ever close.

What started as a storyline document turned into adding characters, locations, Exile gangs, and even things like the Assassin's Memoir.  I'd love some feedback.  Here is a link to download the latest version:

Yes.  I don't see why there can't be an EPN NPC and a Cypherite NPC that give missions slanted towards those orgs.  After all, Cypherites and EPN have to take Machinist / Zion critical missions.  Every so many updates a mission or two can be added to those contacts, and they can be repeatable (similar to Pandora's Box).
Development Discussion Development Roundtable Suggest a Quest Suggest a Quest Theorydust 0 04/30/2008 19:16
Here's what I thought would a good topic:  suggest quest content that could be implemented in the game.

Example:  I suggest giving all of the mob bosses special versions of their drops (like, the Crushers' boss could drop a special Hammer) that can be collected and traded in for a reward.

All Richland mob bosses' drops could traded in for a lower level item.  Same with Westview for a higher level item, and so on and so forth for International and Downtown.  There could even be a special reward for trading in all 4 districts' rewards.

Something similar could be done for the hideout Exiles' bosses in the districts.

This would give new players an incentive to move explore the city more and get some additional, permanent content in the game.

How about you guys?  Have a suggestion (or feedback on this one)?

I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised by how slowly the Halborn / Intruders storyline is moving.  It took chapters 5.1 to 6.2 for the Unlimit saga to play out, and we're approaching that length.  Chapter 9 seemed to tread water far too long, but it looks like we're finally finding out some info.

Here's a thought:  if Halborn / Carlyne are from a group of humans who remained free from the Matrix due to helping the Machines during the war, could we see the beginnings of a long-term new side in this conflict (a true "fourth" org, for lack of a better term)?

Yes, it is the first one that takes place in the Real, but I noticed that the sections that take place in the Matrix are in black and white, and it is in color in the Real.  I hope that, in the future, it's all in color.

I started in beta, have played only one character consistently since launch and finally hit 50 on 12/30/06, so maybe I'm not the best example, but...

I leveled up through critical missions and grinding Assassination missions, always on Hard.  Having the Download Mission Map ability is awesome; it gets you where you need to go in as little time as possible (and is extremely helpful in those awful mazes of abandoned buildings in Richland).  Join with a faction who have high-level players who are willing to take you on missions with them.

I did this until about level 39/40.  Then I went through the entire mission archive, and that took me to level 48 and some change.  After that, it was grind, grind, grind until 50, because I was hungry for it.

Community General Discussion 2 year Anniversary Re:2 year Anniversary Theorydust 0 02/12/2007 10:37
My opinion is:  if it's going to be like the Halloween and Christmas events, and not like the Sleepwalkers last year, then I'd rather see Rarebit's time go to creating more permanent content for the game than the temporary stuff we see during the holidays.  The Sleepwalkers event was nice because it was reminiscent of what people expected (and had) during the early days of MxO (server-wide story-like impact and action).  However, if all we're getting is another holiday-style "event", then I'd rather see more quest-like items added to the game and what not that we will be able to enjoy long after the anniversary is over.  This game is on a six-week development cycle (longer when it's during the Winter Holiday), and these holiday events take a lot of time away from other content that can be added to the game.  Having yet another event like that a year is, IMHO, not a wise use of MxO's already paper-thin resources.

Very cool event.  I liked the Cypherites showing up and having a big rumble- it was a nice touch and finally showing some Cyph/EPN conflict on a bigger scale.  Throw the commandos in and it was like a crazy rumble in the Matrix.  Awesome.

Community General Discussion Insight Into The Future Re:Insight Into The Future Theorydust 0 02/04/2007 07:25

I wonder if these "changes to the universe, past and present" involve the idea Rarebit posted a while back in the "Ask the Dev" thread regarding his theory (after watching the trilogy again) of (IIRC) Neo not really being the Anamoly, but rather was rather meant to fight and stop Smith.  I'd have to search through the thread to find it, but then again, the Search function isn't great here.

I know we don't have a quest system, but couldn't the email system be used in a sort-of quest system? I've been playing 9Dragons and one thing I like is how you gain new missions as you level up or hit other milestones. Couldn't a system be put in place that could email players non-tradeable "golden ticket"-type missions based on leveling up, hitting a certain number of CQ points, etc.? Just a thought.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable Using In-game Email for Quest-type System Re:Using In-game Email for Quest-type System Theorydust 0 02/02/2007 10:19
The other good thing about this idea is that it uses functionality that's already in place (email system, mission system) instead of building a whole-new quest system from scratch (which won't happen).  Email storage would probably have to be increased, though.

I'd be curious if a dev would be able to comment on the feasibility of this idea, and what the caveats are.

Also, would this be something players would even want to see in the game?
Development Discussion Development Roundtable Using In-game Email for Quest-type System Re:Using In-game Email for Quest-type System Theorydust 0 02/01/2007 20:08

Well, the quest-type things we've seen in the game (such as Binary Boy or the trail of collectors leading you through Uriah) are basically obtaining a certain amount of items and give them to a collector.

So, using the email system, a player could receive a golden ticket mission, with the instructions in the details (e.g. "Obtain five Special Silver Badges and 20 robot parts"SMILEY, and once you do that, you activate the ticket, which spawns a mission in a location with the NPC (either new or major/minor character).

Or say you hit (again, as an example) 1000 CQ points.  You get a golden ticket email for a chance to meet and maybe spar with Seraph (or a simulacrum of him).

Again, it's just an idea.

It's a sad fact that the population isn't as large as it could be.  Unless you're at one of the more "popular" hardlline like Mara C or Tabor Park, you're not going to see a ton of activity.  Go to Downtown; it's like a ghost town.  Now, when there's some special event (like New Year's Eve), a club can be packed. But this is rare.

I'm in the minority of people who love this game.  Yes, it is flawed (the last two levels in the Real suck, as does the driving), but the fact that it tells a complete story (really, more than a movie length) involving Niobe and Ghost that ties in neatly to The Matrix Reloaded is awesome.  I really liked the combat, and running from Smith(s) in those last few levels are heart-pounding.  More games should have the cinematic appeal that this does.

Another question:  with the new style cinematics, would it have been feasible to use stills of in-game models/backgrounds and manipulate them with Adobe After-Effects (or whatever is used to create the cinematics now)?  That way, the game could still have retained (in theory) the 3D/game feel?
