I have also observed that some operatives become distracted and irritable if they are not involved in speculation on a subject that invites doubt and uncertainty. Speculation about the future of Wright's company is rampant in the city since her abrupt disappearance; it is not surprising that Ms. Utley, an influential member of the board of the large Pendhurst-Amaranth consumer products corporation, should show some interest in the possibility of acquiring the research company.

It should be noted, however, that Ms. Utley is considered potentially dangerous. She collaborated extensively with Zionites and members of E Pluribus Neo during the Unlimit attacks on Pendhurst-Amaranth. Although she remains plugged into the System, the degree of her interaction with those groups raises questions about her awareness of the simulation. It may not be irrelevant to mention here that her position within the corporation improved significantly as a result of the Unlimit affair.

We have observed that "success" in human business practices relies largely upon the ability to manipulate the perceptions and reactions of competitors.
