All Access SOE Crossroads Matrix Online; but for how much longer? Re:Matrix Online; but for how much longer? CloudWolf 0 05/04/2009 16:07

Yup, unless something is done, its a quick grave for a good, nad potentially very profitable, game with a big IP following.

Balls in SOE's court and, unfortunately, we all pretty much know what that means.

Woo for Dawn Of War, an awesome game. With 3 expansions, not two. Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and the new Soulstorm.

If Brenlo ever wants a game he can just PM me with a time and date >=)

Now listening. Heard some good stuff on the mxo forums this time round so i'm looking forward to it ^_^

Loved the response on MxO's cinematics, i'd always wanted to know more about that process so that was cool to hear, be sure to thank Joy for me!

Woo for Mass Effect! Tis an awesome game for sure SMILEY<img src=

Passion and dedication ftw! (take that how you will, heh)

Also nice to hear some words on the staying power of SOE games. I think the death of an MMO is a constant worry for players and no one never wants their game to go away. I for one know it'd be crushing for me if MxO were to suddenly just go poof. Keep rocking the dedication guys ( though a little extra love never hurt anyone SMILEY<img src= )

I'm actually hoping it will be micro transition. Just seems a better fit for a console MMO, especially a shooter.
All Access Podcast Discussions What is one thing you Love? Re:What is one thing you Love? CloudWolf 0 01/25/2008 03:44
  Game:

The Matrix Online

Handle:

CloudWolf

What I Love:

The storyline and community, pure and simple. I know of no other mmo that has even attempted to pull off a real time progressive storyline like MxO does. Its so involving and gripping and keeps you coming back for more. I mean, the thing gets progressed daily. Thats an achivement.

Oh and the multiple mediums in which the story is presented is cool. I simply love the graphic novel style cinematics that we get to help move things a long, that idea is so creative and in tune with the matrix universe its great.

As for the community, MxO is the little game that could with such a tight knit community that is passionate beyond belief about its game. We all want to see it succeed and when we team up together on projects like mxospace it really makes me proud to be a member of said community.

Where For Art Thou Test Server?

Linking to my points on a decline of development staff comes the realisation of a distinct lack of test server for players to test potential features/fixes on their way to the game. Quoted as being restricting many times by what little of remaining staff we have this void has been outright blamed for a general fear to develop larger projects. Not to mention has no doubt delayed the fixing on some most vital and long awaited bugs (see extensive dev testing required for the interlock fixes that pushed back the original scheduled for Update 56, a delay that may have been avoided if the team had the player base to assist them).

I can not say i know of another single SOE MMO that is also denied adequet testing facilities in this manner.

Will The Matrix Online ever receive a Test Server?

Website Smebsite

Let me be blunt, The Matrix Online's website can only be called a lost cause. At least thats what SOE seem to think. Let me elaborate by pointing out a couple of key flaws and long time complaints by the community. First and foremost, the guide button present on the navigation bar. Dulled. Unused. Ever since it's launch over a year ago.

This guide was once actively pursued by former MxO Community Relations Manager, Dan 'Walrus' Myers, who went as far as writing a brief quick start guide on his own accord, allowing players to provide feedback on his draft. This too was over a year ago. We have had no word and no hope for our website ever coming to close to the standard of other SOE websites.

Second, the premise of a players site ala Planetside, EQ, EQ2 and VG. There are two buttons on the site's main navigation, 'News' and 'Players' - both linking to basic news site, the only page i might add to undersee any kind of regular updates and that is purely down to the fact that page alone is under the control of the CRM. Why provide a Players button with no intention of a players site? I read it more as an insult than anything.

Third, clearly viewable from the above mentioned news page is an image advetising an 'Update 2.0' - another relic of the website's first introduction this image has been incorrect since day 1 and despite regular complaints from the community remains unfixed. It originally linked (now gone, it is a static, useless image) to an explaination of the Combat Revision 2.0, part of Update 34, not 2.

Update 2.0 however implies the game has only received one update since its induction... one. Hardly a positive sight for potential players researching the game. All it required from the start was a little care to properly research the product and all it's required since is a small update to the image relating to the current released update and a link to the appropriate patch notes. As i mentioned, requested for years, ignored for years.

And this brings me to perhaps one the biggest concerns for the site, the main front page, the beacon of which all visitors are met with, the hub for potential players. This page clearly advertises an anniversary event for the game. An event that took place over 7 months ago. This image remains grossly out of date, despite knowingly having a fall back image of 'The Story Continues...' which has been used in the past the web team leave the site in disarray - leading potentials to see nothing but an abused game from the get go.

This isn't even the first time the team have appeared to simply be lazy in their duties, you see when it first came online the site contained a video section of it's media area (which too has seen limited updates over the years, only 1 to be exact). The videos hosted here however never contained any audio. So what happened instead of the problem simply being fixed? The section was removed. Never to be seen again.

The site is bluntly put, a shambles. A harsh relisation many have had to deal with since it's initial launch so long ago.

Can we ever hope for regular and relevant updates to the website?

If you could please forward the following i would be forever grateful.

Developers, developers, developers, developers.

It is a widely known fact among the community that the matrix online is starved for development staff. When the game first transitioned to SOE the company took on around 30 full time people to continue development of the game and since then a number of them have either left of their own accord or been forwarded to other peojects. A lot of these people (if not all) have not been replaced. These are known facts ackowledged by the current development staff. However, as a veteran player since before SOE, originating from beta, i can say without a shadow of a doubt the game has declined in development staff and runs on what can only be described as a barebones team.

We have no animator (confirmed several times by current staff members), no modeller, no texturer. And although never confirmed, the fact all content received in patchs has been discussed as direct work resulting from the one designer we do have contact with, i can surmise we have but one designer.

This severe lack of development support has left the game in a terrible place for well over a year now. No new entirely art content can be added. What little development that can be done is largely accomplished by one man (who might i add, operates the game's storyline and daily live events nigh single handed).

What many of us seem to lack understanding on is how SOE were prepared to take on those 30 people at the time of the acquisition yet let the game decay into nothingness over time. It cats seriously doubts over the future of the game, among all the players.

What i ask is, will anything ever be done to rectify the development spiral the game has been falling down ever since the acquisition?

Guides Program... EQ, EQ2, EQOA and Vanguard...

Of course ignoring the significant presence of MxO's LESIG group.

Why not intergrate them into Guides? From my understanding they've been trying for a while too when there were a lot of privacy problems in the initial group.

And another Vanguard SOE integration pet peeve, i see they got a nice new players guide posted up on their players site... MxO has never seen such a guide online (even though Walrus fully worked on one 10 MONTHS ago). The guide button on our (might i add, not players) website remains blanked out despite being acquired almost 2 years now...

Matrix Online hitting 2 years IS a big deal for us, and granted its not been around as much as Everquest a bit more attention in the podcast would have been good, maybe getting a questionaire or feedback from the players themselves which you could share and discuss on the podcast, looking at the game 2 years on and how its got there. Speaking about the anniversary event was quite limited and gave brief details, maybe getting a bit more from the Producers or Devs would have added more to it.

If its really a game you don't care too much about then how about getting more feedback from the Devs of the game or even the players to see what else you can bring to your podcast, you'd be suprised what you may discover if you look deeper into the rarebit hole SMILEY (oh if you don't get that line, I would suggest watching the movies).
