Galactic News Network Community News Thank You All! Thank You All! Valara 0 03/06/2009 11:23

Hi everyone!

Today is both a happy and sad one for me. I'm very happy to see everyone here on the team and forums again after being away for six weeks, but sadly this is also my last day with SOE. While I was out on maternity leave, my husband received a transfer from his company to another city/state, and we are moving within a matter of weeks. (We found out about two weeks after the baby was born - talk about a surprise!)

I have very much enjoyed my time on Star Wars Galaxies and I thought about you all often while I was on leave; I'm sure I'll continue to do so. During my time here I have worked my hardest to represent you and your thoughts, and I hope that I represented you all well.

I hope to cross paths with you again someday either here or in game. If you see Madoka online on Starsider, that's my play character -- feel free to tell me hi!

Thank you all for everything!

Edit: *smacks self* Made a typo on my last post!

Galactic News Network Community News The Puzzler 1/20/09 The Puzzler 1/20/09 Valara 0 01/20/2009 14:40

Welcome to this week's The Puzzler!

What is The Puzzler?

It’s an image from somewhere inside the Star Wars Galaxies world.  But it’s broken into several puzzle pieces – and you only get to see a few at a time until someone here on the message board correctly identifies the location depicted in the picture!

What do I get for solving The Puzzler?

If you are the first one to figure out the ‘mystery location’ by posting it in The Puzzler thread, you will hereby get bestowed upon you the forum title “Puzzler” along with the cool Puzzler icon.

There is only one winner a week so you have to be quick!

The Puzzler “Rules”

An individual can only win The Puzzler once, so if you’ve already won, please step aside and let others try their hand at it.

After the first set of puzzle pieces are posted, location guesses only will be allowed in the thread until after The Puzzler has been solved.  Please don’t clutter the thread up by discussing anything else within it until the game is over.  After it is, you can discuss The Puzzler to your heart’s content…but until that time, anyone posting anything other than a location in the thread will have their post removed.

You must be the first person to post the in-game location of the image within 50 units of where the image was taken (for example if the image was taken at 500, -500 and you posted 525, -450 you would be correct).

In the event that 2 people post at the same time on the message board (and the time stamp reflects this), whoever guessed the location within the closest amount of units will be the winner!

Posting Guesses:

Please post The Puzzler guesses in the following format:

Location: 500,-500

Smuggler of the Month - January 2009

We are pleased to present our the January Smuggler of the Month and official scoundrel, DracoKyaku!

Many thanks to our Smuggler Senator, Vincent76, for putting together this recognition.

If you'd like to be the next Smuggler of the Month, it's easy! Keep an eye out in this forum for a nomination thread each month. Follow the guidelines in the thread to nominate yourself or a fellow connoisseur of beer and pie.

Previous Smugglers of the Month:

DracoKyaku's interview with Vincent76 can be found below. Congratulations!

I hope you'll all join us in congratulating DracoKyaku in achieving the title of 'Scoundrel'.

Vincent76 Wrote:

The nomination list of January has been an overwhelming support to one player on the list of allready nominated scoundrels.

Autumn is known on the Chimaera PVP scene as a force to be reckoned with. Usually jedi will turn the other way and run when they see him.

In our little corner of the world, you'd know him if you read the stickies. He's done alot of indepth combat guides as well as some more smuggler gameplay guides. This one was recently featured in the weekly picks by Valara: [Guide] The Lost Art of Slicing

Im proud to present DracoKyaku as this months Scoundrel, curiously also a member of the Smugglers Alliance guild on Chimaera.

   Words from a Scoundrel ...

When did you start playing the game, ya scallywag?

I've been here from the very start and enjoyed every minute of it, when SWG finally went live in June 2003 and after I'd managed to import a copy at a reasonable price (See, Smuggling from the start!) I started my first Character on Wanderhome.

Upon the European launch of the game later the same year the Euro servers were added and I rolled a new character, Chimaera has been my home ever since.

Tell the lads when you started swigging ya first flask'a'rum like a real Pirate, ya bootlegger!

When I first started playing, my first choice was to grind up through the Marksman boxes and try out Pistols, Carbines and Rifles to find a favourite – I never got that far, once I started using pistols I was set on my path - eventually settling on a combination of Some Pistoleer, Smuggler and the Bounty Hunter pistol tree to reach the speed cap.

Although my main draw was Pistols and using a weapon that many others considered underpowered I eventually fell in love with Smuggler as a whole for much the same reasons – I guess I'm naturally drawn to what people perceive as the underdog.

Did you ever feel like walking the plank, perhaps one of those nights when the moon was Green and far far away and the lasses where all standing on the Marina?

Honestly? I can't say I have.

While always trying to stay optimistic in the face of various game changes I've also been very lucky that I've had a core group of friends who have stuck with the game through all the various iterations.
While we did lose a lot of Guild members with first the CU, then the NGE and eventually decided to disband and join another Guild, we've always managed to stay together.

What made ya stay aboard the Dutchman for all those extra years under the mast, scumbag?

Two things really..

  • The combat system (and I'm speaking of all three variations here, although possibly ignoring the early NGE), It can be as complex or as basic as you want it to be, I really do love spending time tweaking stats and seeing how they play out in game - embarrassing as it sounds, I really get a lot of enjoyment running through my combat log after a huge PvP fight and looking to see how *I* personally affected the battle.
  • The community: my long term friends, our current Guild (Smugglers Alliance on Chimaera) and the regulars on both the Chimaera and Smuggler forums all combine to make SWG a very cool and relaxing place for me to hang out.

Whats ya favorite Gamble?

I love to group up with other Smugglers and wreck as much havoc as we can in PvP zones, not much is more satisfying than hopping out of cloak along with a few well selected fellow scoundrels and dropping a larger force who have made the mistake of bunching together.

When you have ya own ship and a crew, and youre free. Whats your plans, gunrunner?

Relax and enjoy SWG for what it is: a great way to interact with fellow Star Wars fans and participate in that galaxy far, far away.

You can assume:

• All the letters from the quote are present.
• All punctuation from the original quote is included (periods, hyphens, etc.).
• The speaker's name is included.
• Capital letters from the quote are still capitalized.

For example --

Star Wars Galaxies: Game Update 6
Publish Notes, January 12, 2008

Appearance Window:

  • The Appearance tab has been added. All characters may now access a window that determines the outward appearance of their characters. This Appearance window allows you to equip armor, clothing, and jewelry that do not alter your stats, but instead are simply for show.
  • Select "Appearance" in the game menu or use the command /appearancetab to open the Appearance window.
  • To wear an item as an appearance item, you must be able to normally equip that item and that item must be in your inventory at the time you equip it as an appearance item.
  • Items equipped as appearance items do not count against your total inventory space.
  • All profession, level, and species restrictions are still obeyed by appearance items.
  • A radial option "Equip Appearance" has been added to items that are eligible to become appearance items. You will only get this option if you could normally equip the item and if the item is currently in your inventory.
  • Added an option under the "Misc" page in the Options window. This option called "Unequip Items When Double Clicked in the Appearance Window" allows you to turn on/off the ability to unequip items in the Appearance window simply by double clicking on them.
  • A "Hide Appearance Items by Default" option has been added to the Misc section of the Options window. This option will automatically show you the normal appearance on any player creature you examine. The "Hide Appearance Items" option can also be toggled on the Examine window; it will just default to hiding those items.
  • The Examine window now has a checkbox to show/hide a user's appearance items. This will allow you to see the "true" items a character is wearing.
  • Users can equip/unequip items via the Appearance window's "paper doll" by checking the "Show Equipped Items" checkbox. While that checkbox is checked, any items you drag and drop between your inventory and the appearance window will equip/unequip those items.
  • Please be aware there is an issue with the Appearance window and the Shatterpoint Cloak and Cloak of Hate. Using the Hood Up/Down option can cause your Appearance window paper doll to be out of sync with the server. This is simply a superficial bug with the paper doll and Hood Up/Down and causes no damage to your cloak or characters. It can fixed by logging out and back in with your character.

Game Play:

  • A painting reward for completing the Battle of Echo Base flawlessly has been added. Players who have gotten a flawless victory in the past receive the painting on logging in to Game Update 6. Only one painting is awarded retroactively, but you can get a new painting each time the encounter is completed flawlessly.
  • A bug causing female eyes to not behave properly with goggles and other eyewear has been fixed for the following races: Humans, Twi'lek, Sullustan, and Zabrak. Mon Calamari and Trandoshans will be fixed in a later update due to an issue with ATI video cards.
  • Fixed an issue that was preventing Hoth exploration badges and a Nova Orion collection from becoming 'hidden' when unchecking the "Show Completed" box in the Collections window.
  • The Podracers at the Valarian Podracer bunker in the Legacy quest series are no longer floating in the air.
  • Corpses full of loot no longer disappear early when a player with a full inventory attempts to loot.
  • Newly received Junk Dealer Loot Kit components now stack. Old, previously looted, components can be placed in a loot kit then removed to make them stack.
  • Junk Dealer Loot Kits now have the ability to make components stack.
  • Junk Dealer Loot Kits now have the ability to decrement components in a stack.
  • TCG vendors placed by non-traders now transfer as a TCG vendor deed when packed up.
  • A TCG vendor placed by non-traders in a structure they do not own (admin) that is then packed by the structure owner reverts to a TCG vendor deed in the original owner's inventory.

  • It no longer snows in Wayfar and Dearic; snow remains on the ground of Doaba Guerfel and snow falls occasionally.

Player Cities and Structures:

  • Mayors will now get an email when a house has been packed up in their city.
  • Merchant signs can now be placed on theater structures.
  • The Structure Terminal 'Set Name' option no longer changes the name of the structure sign when the UI has been cancelled.
  • Items that increase storage capacity can now be used on the Diner and Barn.
  • Beasts roaming in the Barn now display the correct dyed colors.

Beast Mastery:

  • When a beast egg is converted into a holo-beast data cube, there is now a chance that it will become a rare colored holo-beast. The holo-beast will always be the same when loaded into an emitter, so a rare color holo-beast will always be that rare color while a normal holo-beast will always be the common hue.

Officer and Bounty Hunter:

  • Removed armor restrictions on expertise armor bonuses for officers and bounty hunters. The expertise for these two professions no longer require the player to be wearing a full set of the specified armor; they just get the innate bonus from the expertise.

Domestic Traders:

  • Domestic Traders can now craft items that have an "invisible" appearance:
    • Appearance Tab Left Bracer (Level 22 schematic)

    • Appearance Tab Right Bracer (Level 22 schematic)
    • Appearance Tab Belt (Level 18 schematic)
    • Appearance Tab Necklace (Level 18 schematic)
    • Appearance Tab Gloves (Level 18 schematic)
  • These invisible items, when equipped in the Appearance window, make those slots appear as if you have nothing equipped.

User Interface:

  • Added color customization support for items with four palettes.
  • The collection icons for the Hoth Sharpshooter collections have been swapped.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause resource container icons to not properly draw their current capacity in certain situations.

  • Friend and ignore list entries from other games and galaxies are now displayed in the Community window with the proper identifying prefix.

Character Transfer Service:

  • Fixed an issue that caused Aurillian resource containers to not transfer.

Life Day:

  • The Life Day event has ended. Saun Dann is no longer available to begin the quest to obtain a STAP, but the other quest-related NPCs will remain for a short time for anyone who still has the quest in progress. Once the STAP reward is obtained from Watto, the quest can be deleted if desired with no loss of reward.

Players who visited the Sunrunner galaxy forum picked these choices as the best describe the personality of the server, with a total of 63 votes:

  • Large number of helpful players

  • Many strong player associations
  • Strong focus on PvE

What is the Sunrunner?

The Sunrunner is fast ship owned by Nym in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

How Would You Describe Sunrunner?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • There should be an all of the above option-- when it comes to Sunrunner, we're everything (and a little bit more sometimes) and we have our own peaks. Sunrunner is a place for everyone, and yes, we do have a little bit of drama-- okay, a lot of drama, but all servers have a little. I guess the most important thing to remember when coming here is if you're not familiar with Sunrunner, you'll either become familiar with Sunrunner or you'll end up having your pocketbook and shoes stolen.

  • I voted for the helpful players option cause there are a fair bit of them out there.

  • There is NO RL, there is only the Drama of Sunrunner.

What is the Starsider?

The Starsider is a Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser in service to the New Republic in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

How Would You Describe Starsider?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • I'd also add a "mature playerbase" option; while we have our share of less-than-mature players like any online environment, they feel much fewer and far between here than elsewhere.

  • I do belive we do Space better than anyone else, and our events overall are top knotch!

  • It's everything, along with Space / Space PvP.

  • While I realize RP will be a major draw for some people, don't let the poll pigeon hole our server.  Our JTL pilots are second to none and our PVPers want more out of a fight than hours upon hours of clone zerging.  We have everything from all Wookiee Guilds to Naked PVP and everything in between.
  • the space community on Starsider is the most organized community in the entire game of all the servers.

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • Shadowfires a great server, with great people. Get to know some people and you'll be doing instance runs every night. Crafters are pretty abundant, and I know several of them that do not sell for large profits.

  • A place with solid pvp and a very helpful community

  • In this small server, we always pull together, faction aside, to get things done.

  • Strong focus on PvE

What is the Radiant?

The Radiant VII is a Consular-class Old Republic starship seen in Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

How Would You Describe Radiant?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • Radiant has always classicly been a PvP server in the minds of the majority of the population but recently it has changed and now more a general server with a little bit of everything.

  • I think helpful players is actually our strongest point here.

  • to me radiant has always been a helpfull, very crafter oreinted server. and like others said, pvp has always been a core group, a minority, but a consistant group..  in other words there are probly like 30-50 people that like to do it and do it often.. perhaps more.

  • Radiant is a server that has been always known for having very helpful players, and most of the time great PvP. This servers PvP is not as big as it was back in the day when Theed was the main pvp area before Restuss, but compared to allot of servers we're still up there, and most of the PvP battles go back and forth... I always enjoy it. The down-sides of the server is that it lacks good role-players.

  • Lots of large guild's. I have been there since june 26th 2003.

  • it does'nt matter if you play to euro primetime or american prime time, you will always find some helpfull players!

  • there is acutlaly alot of roleplaying if you know where to look but mostly pvp

  • Definatly RP, PvE, Helpful Players and PvP. At least I see most of those things happen when I'm playing on Gorath. My focus is however RP and we have that a lot.

  • most of the pvp happens in german/european prime time, which means in the morning for US citizens.

What is the FarStar?

The FarStar is a Corellian corvette dispatched to search for a rogue Imperial governor in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

How Would You Describe Europe-FarStar?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • I'd say there is a fairly heavy amount of players who are into Combat in general, PvE or PvP.  Also a hell of a lot of pilots on this server compared to other EU servers.  Not half as many events and RPing, obviously.

  • I voted PvP, although alot of our guilds are pretty strong as well, lots of members. Also the player cities are pretty good, like Prometheus on LOK or Centuria in Talus, just to name two. (No offense by not naming all of the great player cities)

  • I'd say it's a pretty balanced server, with something for everyone... PvP is ok, though not really consistent.

What is the Chimaera?

The Chimaera is Star Destroyer under the command of Captain Pallaeon that took part in the Battle of Endor.

How Would You Describe Europe-Chimaera?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • I think the majority of us could quite happily vote in multiple sections of this poll, seeing as we can't though - I've dropped my vote in "Large amount of helpful players" that seems the closest to an overall approximation of our Chimaera community over the years.

  • All of em could quite easily apply, but went for helpful people as its generally the community that keeps people here

  • High population/community has always been the strongest point of Chimaera in my opinion. And that goes a long way, more crafters, helpers, pvp and pve.

  • Tons of helpful peeps but then we have a high populations, tons of good PA's I'd recommend.

  • I think it's the amount of helpful people, and just all around good people, besides a few exceptions.

  • We do have a consistent medium-to-high population

  • There's ton of wonderful helpers, crafting community is top notch, several senators or past senators belong to our player base, there's even space community base here as well!

Space: Bria also host many space events (usally pvp orientanted) Market: Bria has a great market that has everything you can need from PVP gear to rare jedi holo's to the latest hoth fashions.

  • 1. There is a very strong focus on PvP. 2. There are several large guilds within each faction that seem to dominate the landscape. 3. There is a predominance of guildwarring. 4. We have an excellent crafting community.

  • The PvP community is strong, the Roleplaying Community is strong, and the PvE is great... pickup instance groups abound.

  • One thing I liked about Bria is the good mix of Roleplay, PvE, and PvP. Also Bria has many large and small guild that bring out the diversity of Bria's culture and Economics.  I think Bria, out of the serves I have been on, brings out the spirit of Starwars life.

  • Strong focus on PvP
  • Many strong player associations
  • Strong focus on PvE

What is the Ahazi?

The Ahazi is a New Republic fleet tender in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

How Would You Describe Ahazi?

Specific comments about this galaxy include:

  • ahazi is the all around server we have just about everything including drama.
  • Lots of good strong guilds.  Alot of old guilds still around with orginal members and some new faces.  Alot of new strong guilds as well I think we arent as bad off as a lot of people may think.
  • I feel that there are many strong guilds that are very well rounded in both PVP and PVE.  As far as PVP, the server is a little Rebel heavy at the moment but it goes back and forth.  In a PVP day both sides usualy win several times.  TIE hosts a 24/7 buff house at RUstuss for the Imperial Alliance.  I am sure the rebels do the same.  In order to do PVP you need to PVE equipment so many guilds do PVE.  Perfect Hothh runs happen on both sides.  Also there are several guilds that are really good in space -V- being very strong on the imp side (not sure what Rebel guild does space but I see them out there.  There are also many crafters on this server which results in a very well rounded comunity.  I do hope that people transfer to Ahazi and the will be welcomed, but I hope we manage to keep the same faction ballance.  It makes for more fun for everyone.
