Clio

If you have the requirements

Hey, redpill! Glad to see you made it through the awakening process. Now you're here, and it's time to get down to business. The Matrix is a pretty harsh place -- we need to help each other out if we're going to survive.

You notice the ID card in your inventory? We all have baggage from our former lives, baggage that doesn't do anything but hinder our progress. I need you to hand that over before we can get going.

After the trade

All right, not a moment to lose. The first thing you'll want to do is turn around and use that hardline. Make sure you have all of your abilities loaded up. They'll come in handy once everything hits the fan -- and believe me, it will.

Once you're done, head straight west until you find Stokes. There's a compass at the bottom of your HUD if you need it.

Note for Stokes

Stokes,

This redpill needs a real gun. See what you can do.

--Clio

If you don't have the requirements

I don't know what you're talking about. But, uh... if you see any new redpills around, send them my way, 'kay?

Stokes

If you have the requirements

So, you talked to Clio, huh? Good, good. No time to lose. There's something you're going to find out about soon: Exiles. They're programs, just like the Machines, except they're here in the Matrix without permission. Kinda like us, and you might think we'd be on the same side... but no! Most of 'em just want a bigger piece of the pie, more power... and they'll kill you on sight.

Give me that note, and I'll get you armed and send you on to some more specific training. Time to get your feet wet, huh?

After the trade

All right, there ya go. Make sure you equip that shotgun -- it's a little nicer than that piece of... that thing you got in the training construct.

Now it's time to find Acid, to the west of us. She's got some combat training in store for you. You might want to bring up the map on your HUD [press the 'M' key] and add a waypoint. Just right-click near Acid's icon on the map and select 'Add Waypoint'. You might need to zoom the map out; just use the buttons at the bottom.

Note for Acid

Acid,

This cat seems cool enough for Parallaxis. Give them the low-down.

--Stokes

If you don't have the requirements

Hey, I'm just minding my own business here. You got a problem?

Acid

If you only have some of the requirements

So far, so good, eh redpill? Well, I've got something a little more dangerous for you. You see those Choppers hanging around the containers just to the north of us? Those are some of the same Exiles that Stokes loves so much. It's time to take some of 'em out. They carry keys like a sort of gang insignia... bring me a key and I'll send you on your way. Oh, one more thing -- you loaded up all your abilities, right? You might want to try out Remote Proxy now. Bring up your abilities screen [hit the 'O' key] and drag the Remote Proxy icon onto your hotbar, then click on it. Those proxies can be life savers.

If you have enough of the requirements

Nice! I see you're willing to take on a little dirty work. Good thing, too -- there are Exiles like them all over the City, and all of 'em are bound to be tougher than these. You're gonna need to practice and develop your skills if you want to survive. You'll need to use all your abilities out there. Now just hand over the goods, and I'll send you to the next spot. Plus, I've got something that can help you out if you get into any trouble.

After the trade

Before I send you anywhere -- did you notice the building behind me? It's Club Parallaxis. Feel free to stop in and take a breather if you need to. There are clubs like this around the City, worth checking out if you're ready to party. Once you're set, head south between these buildings and keep an eye out for Override. You might meet up with some more Exiles, but I think you can handle them just fine. Remember to have your abilities and items ready, by dragging them from your abilities window ['O'] or your inventory ['I'] to your hotbar.

Note for Override

Override,

This op looks like they've got it together. They should be able to handle that combat upgrade of yours.

--Acid

If you don't have any of the requirements

You need someone to hook you up with training? Look for Clio, over at the hardline east of here. She'll get you all sorted out.

Override

If you only have some of the requirements

So you think you're hot stuff, huh? Well, you're doing pretty good... but don't get cocky. I can't tell you how many operatives we lose when they get in over their heads. As long as you're in Richland, just remember this: Things get tougher as you head south. If you get in trouble, just point yourself north and run. Now you better keep that in mind, 'cause I want you to get some more Chopper Keys for me.

If you have enough of the requirements

Not too bad, kid. Hand over those keys and I'll send you on your way, with a little parting gift.

After the trade

Before you do anything, you better equip those pants. They'll give you an edge in a close fight... and you're gonna need it. Now head southwest. You'll find RPM down there, and she'll finish up the training for ya. And remember: if you're in over your head, go north.

Note for RPM

RPM,

I've taken care of this rookie's hand-to-hand program. Can you give them a ranged combat boost?

--Override

If you don't have any of the requirements

You need some help? Go find Clio, up by the hardline northeast of here. Maybe she can help you out.

RPM

If you only have some of the requirements

So, you're the new redpill, huh? Clio and the gang have been sending me some info on you. Sounds like you'll make a great operative, if you keep it up. Now I need you to use everything they taught you, and bring me six of those Chopper Keys. Remember, experiment with those abilities you have loaded up. And level them up when you get a chance... it makes a big difference.

If you have enough of the requirements

Great job. I knew you were up for it... you mighta figured this out already, but the Matrix isn't a real safe place. It's gonna take training, practice, experience, and even good equipment to survive. Speaking of equipment, I've got something here to help you out. Let's finish this trade and get you on your way!

After the trade

Well, looks like it's time to head out there, soldier. If you haven't already, tag the hardline behind me -- that's something you'll be doing a lot of. Once you've got a hardline on your list, you'll be able to teleport there, plus use it for your abilities, code storage, and all that good stuff. Now would be a good time to take to Zion command. I know they'll have some missions for you to run. Just bring up your cell phone [hit the 'N' key] and you'll be on your way. Good luck, operative!

If you don't have any of the requirements

You need some pointers? Just head up to the northeast and look for Clio, she'll get you hooked up.

Codebase

Requirement Set 1

If you're looking for an easy buck, go see Mercury; he's down in the basement of this building behind me. If you do enough work for him, he'll authorize me to give you a nice bonus item.

By the way, have you ever thought about working for the Machines? There are certain...advantages. Once you finish your basic training missions, you'll get a call from Agent Gray. After that, press "N" whenever you want to call him up for work. You'll like being a part of the System...trust me.

Requirement Set 2

Collected surplus Chopper Keys from the local hooligans? Sure, you could sell them for straight cash at any vendor, but if you want extra operative experience points for them, I can hook you up--plus half their normal cash value, too. What do you say?

Requirement Set 3

The System doesn't allow giving those Chopper Keys to just anyone. Fortunately for you, I've got a solution: I'll swap you a Chopper Key for a souvenir version that you can give to anyone you want. And you can still sell the sourvenir version at any vendor for the same price as a regular Chopper Key.

After trading for Requirement Set 1

Now you'll be looking respectable.

Hey, if you're still interested in local loot, try checking around Mars Industrial Storage a few blocks east of her; press "M" to find it on your map, or ";" to find it on your atlas. Can't miss it.

And hey, don't forget to hit "N" to call Agent Gray back once he contacts you! You'll thank me later!

After trading for Requirement Set 2

That's an experience infusion straight into your cerebral cortex. Feels good, huh? I've got more of what you need--just keep brining me those Chopper Keys.

After trading for Requirement Set 3

That's right, tell your friends! You can only get those souvenirs from me--Codebase!

Rena

You'll always find Mercury puttering around down here. If you're a long ways off, an easy way to get yourself pointed towards him, after you've talked to him at least once before, is to press "N" to open your Contacts List (or click the cell phone button to the right of your compass at the bottom of your HUD, then select "Mission" from the pop-up menu), scroll down to his name, and press the red flag button next to his name.

That adds a waypoint on your HUD pointing straight to him. To get rid of the waypoint, stand next to him, or type "/removewaypoint Mercury" in your command line.

Mason

If you click the cell phone button to the right of your compass at the bottom of the screen, then select "Team" from the pop-up menu (or simply press "J"), you can use the "Find" and "Seek" functions in the "Team" window to locate others interested in joining forces to complete missions.

To add someone to your team, right-click on them and select "Recruit to Mission", or type "invite" followed by their name.

Up to six people can participate in a single "Mission Team," but remember that your enemies will usually be about the same level as the average operative level of all your mission team members.

Pheno

A mission may send you hundreds of meters away from where you started, and sometimes Mercury will need you to do something difficult, like fighting a bunch of people who are causing problems for him.

It can be tough, but if you manage to complete all of his missions, you'll get a special reward. He isn't that bad a guy to work for.

Burt

So, you want to find more people to help you with missions? Typing "/who" will give you a list of operatives in your local area. To whisper a message to them, type "/t," then the operative's name, then the message; i.e. something like "/t (player name) (message)."

'Course, don't forget that if they have the "Block unknown Matrix IMs" box in their HUD's "Chat Options > Options" panel checked, they probably won't get the whispered message from you. You can get to that panel by clicking the "..." button at the top of your chat window, then selecting "Options" from the pop-up menu.

Note for Codebase

Codebase,

This operative did some good work for me. I think they'll go pretty far, and it won't hurt to have friends in high places, huh? Give them a bonus.

--Mercury

Lovelorn

Freakish programs collect down in the Exile hideout beneath Mars Industrial Storage east of here. You'll see it marked on your Atlas map if you press the ";" key.

They'd really get out of hand if the Merovingian wasn't around to keep them in line. He's a good guy to work for, the Merv. You can call his mission controller, Flood, on your cell phone once he contacts you and gives you his number.

Bellix

Once you've completed your introductory missions, you'll get a call from Flood, mission controller for the Merovingian. Call him back by clicking the cell phone button at the bottom center of your HUD, then selecting "Mission" from the pop-up menu, and clicking on Flood's picture in the window that appears.

Working for the Merv can be well worth your time. He isn't caught up in this silly "war" between Zion and the Machines; he's just out to make a profit by taking advantage of both sides. If you do good work, you'll meet his wife, Persephone, the Twins, and all the other powerful Exiles who bow down before the Merovingian.

So think about giving Flood a call, hm?

Speaking of which, you should go see the Chessman. He's on top of the hill in the large park in Tabor, east of here.

Requirement Set 1

Hey, want some work? The scummy Unclean who hang out down in the first two sublevels of the building behind me here carry "RSI Pills" that change your hair color. Bring me a full set of the first four pills--that's eight total, since there are male and female versions--and I'll give you a hat just like the one I've got on. Nice, huh?

Don't waste time heading northeast to sell those pills at the Tabor Plaza vendors. Sure, they'd give you cash for them, but... Uh... Did I mention how cool this hat looks?

Requirement Set 2

Oho, a discriminating customer, are we? I see you've got your eye on these one-of-a-kind glasses. They'll boost your Inner Strength Regeneration Rate--gives you more juice in battle.

All you gotta do is bring me a full set of the seven code fragments dropped by the Headless. You'll find their boss, Barebones, down on sublevel four in the building behind me. Don't whack him, though--wait for him to call his Headless cronies, and then plunder them for the frags.

After trading for Requirement Set 1

Thanks! You won't regret it; that hat's one in a million. Told you you're better off with me than those cheating vendors a block northeast at Tabor Plaza, didn't I? Sure, they may have lots of stuff for sale...

Hey, where are you going?

Okay, well... If you run across the Chessman in Tabor Park, tell him I sent you, all right? He can always use a hand executing his complicated strategies, and he pays pretty well.

Hey, where are you going?

After trading for Requirement Set 2

Oh, uh, yeah... Don't worry too much about that Health Regeneration reduction you get while wearing the glasses. Sure, it'll take longer to heal up after a fight, but... Man! Check out that red shine! And think about all that Inner Strength they get you!

Come back any time!

Spence

You'll usually find a powerful Exile lurking at the bottom of an Exile hideout. Here at Mars Industrial, it's a guy named "Zero." He's tougher than the other programs down there, but it might be worth your while to take a shot at him. The big cheeses in these hideouts carry powerful items. For instance, Zero's got some gloves that will help you in hand-to-hand combat.

There's something you should know about getting these hideout boss items, though. Most of them come in three versions. You've got your best chance of finding the most powerful version if your operative level is less than or equal to the hideout boss. If you're above his level, your chances of getting the best version go way down.

Callisto

A lot of the Exile programs you'll find in these hideouts carry RSI Pills. You can use these to change your appearance permanently by right-clicking them in your inventory and selecting "Activate Item." You can't undo the change once you've used the pill, so be careful!

If you don't want to use the pills, you can sell them. You'll find vendors in Tabor Plaza, about a block northeast of here, who will buy them from you.

You can also sell them to other players on the Marketplace. Right-click on a hardline and select the "Marketplace" button to access the Marketplace interface. Don't forget the listing fee charged for items you leave on the Marketplace!

Finally, you can trade the pills to another player by dragging the pill from your inventory, and releasing the buttom when it's over the other player.

Ichor

You'll find Exile hideouts like the one below our feet in many places across the city. They hold a lot of hostile programs, but you can also find useful codes in them, especially if you make it all the way to the final sublevel and beat the hideout leader.

The Richland "Casino" hideouts that you'll see marked on your map (press "M" to bring it up) all have the same enemies, and the same rewards. This hideout here in Uriah, though, and most of the hideouts in the rest of the city have unique items that you won't find anywhere else.

If you can get past the powerful Exiles and their leader at the bottom of the hideout, you'll find a Teleporter that will bring you back up to the top floor, so you won't have to fight your way back out through all those Exiles again.

Note for Michel (yes, it's in Tabor, not Uriah, but it's related to the new player quests, so I put it here)

Michel,

This accomplished desperado requires compensation for inspired play. Please do what you can.
