Aint that the truth dude.  Honestly half the reason I dont go to my grandparents for xmas is I feel really uncomfortable receiving gifts from random family members I hardly know and have akward relationships with.

Wow the Browns are doing horrible... I got four tickets to the game this week.  Saterday my freind who works at one of the most packed bars in Northeast Ohio tried to sell the tickets off for me. Face value on the tickets were 70 a piece by the end of the night bartenders were trying to sell them off for 100 bucks total for four tickets. Not a single person bit.

Granted it was the Texans but come on I know I was spoiled by scalping tickets in the mid 90s during the Indians highpoint but this is just painful.

I just think for the most part the current MMO industry is seeing a generational shift. Most of these games are bombing because of eventual boredom of the MMO mold in addition to poor quality marketing etc.

I mean for the most part the MMO industry has been glittering the same turd for years now.  MMOs arnt on the same quality as single player games. Many if not all are rushed out by producres which result in poor quality.

Honestly if this trend continues in any capacity Im done with MMOs for good. The quality of the games plus the subscription fee just doesn't add up anymore. Believe it or not the only game I actually saw come out this year with any real cool ideas to make the MMO experience feel more fluid were Requiem Bloodymare. It added ragdoll kills to NPCs and believe it or not something that simple made a world of difference in the combat. Speaking of which I may check out how its doing now as its free to play "The item marketplace turned me off"

"Wow new race addition new dungeons added per patch this games free and ported from Korea and it gets more content than MxO that says something"

A new video card that actually supports 16:9 aspect ratios

A PS3

A new heady piece made from either Jason Lee or Chris Carlson. "A bubbler can run you 800 bucks"

A girlfriend whos lack of ambition and appetite for designer strains and cartoons is only eclipsed by mine.  Im thinking along the lines of hot un employed just out of highschool or in extreme cases of hotness a socially introverted senior so I dont have to deal with all her stupid freinds.

And a long list of other things that I cant even begin to think up dignfiable code words for so Ill just stop.

It's pretty much going the way of Tabula Rasa.

As for MMO's in general it seems most people are already over the craze and/or have already comfortably nestled themselves in their chosen MMO, if there are any major MMO releases coming up expect the worst...I for one wouldn't bother with another one until the market isn't so flooded with them.

I would tend to agree with this.

There will be some games coming out, Stargate (and there's a Star Trek mmo too right?) which might attract alot of subscribers because they've been long running series, however, unless a completely new and attractive concept  comes out for an MMO that doesn't have a history behind it, I think most people are already satisfied by WoW or their current chosen MMO.

Yep I agree SOE looked like it was gasping for air over at fanfaire marketing DC Universe and Agency.  Im rather curious to see how they can even compete with the next generation of releases.

Ironicly I still think MxO if thrown alot of recovery cash would still do a good job in todays MMO market. It's just it has the biggest double edged sword in the MMO industry backing it. SOE gives it just enough money to survive and not even close enough to flourish. Ill give NCSoft this much at least their ambitious and through the various closings Im sure they will eventually strike gold like WoW did. As for SOE and the market however unless Agency is something out of this world gameplay wise I dont see them doing well next generation.

Community General Discussion If you were a DEV... Re:If you were a DEV... privaronT 0 11/24/2008 03:39

If I were a dev the first thing I would do is find out all those fun PR questions like why we cant get a table at fanfaire or any real support from SOE regarding the game itself.

After that I would start investigating the addition of new characters to the story. I think one thing MxO seriously suffers from is a lack of ability to model and add new characters on the fly. Although the wireframe is "neat" its not a new character model or even anything that pushes the characters forward visually to make them look powerful.

I would add alot more arc based characters so were not disecting the inner meaning of Ookamis struggle two and a half years later...

I would tie up some loose ends as a result of that addition including more death based plot turns much like Shimada got in the last cinematic. Death is a natural part of character progression for any good story and MxO seems to sometimes hold on to its characters way to long dragging them out. Cypherites and EPN being  a perfect example.

After all of this I would try to work on the eventual deaths of the EPN and Cypherite organizations but in a manner in which modernized their agendas and existing fronts to something more relevant in the story. No longer would they be Cypherites but perhaps their goals agendas leadership structure and such would either dissolve or shift in a new direction.

I would investigate the idea of perhaps doing a time leap in the games storyline. Imagine a lore changing event supported by perhaps a skybox and mob spawn rotation which led up to a huge event in which the Matrix stopped letting you jack in than doing a 6 months later sort of thing. It could go into detail regarding changes in the main characters lives and intentions not to mention the changes that occured within the simulation. Perhaps a new iteration of the Matrix could be integrated into the pod systems.  Although I really doubt it could be done justice visually I feel we have suffered alot worse and if done right it could be a really good way to reboot the current storyline.

I would bring back Neo and or Morpheus and do it soon. Honestly when your driving subscription characters are a wearwolf female designed originally for a Haloween type event and nothing really deep. A female Agent designed by Aether whos original purpose has been LONG outlived according to its creator and the recycling of plot characters over and over and over again than something needs to give.

Buying into the whole sacred Neo thing where you have to tap your head 5 times and spin in a circle before saying his name or using him in the story is getting old. Its almost 2009... Although I doubt its going to be subscription shifting mark my words if you write Neo or Morpheus back in preferably together your going to get some media buzz. Put that into motion with the fact that you have trial keys and it could be something marketable. Hell put in my previous idea heres an example

"Neo and Morpheus return to free humanity from the Matrix in a stunning turn of events the Machines inact an emergency protocol iteration. This iteration was designed by the machines in the event that humanity risked both its own survival but that of the Machines. Now with the simulation left in shambles still suffering from the emergancy rewrite of the current simulation you and your freinds must venture into the code. This winter what levels of survival are you willing to accept?"

Hey its no Wrath of the Lich King but it beats going dress shopping with Rose.

Development Discussion Development Roundtable I want a challenge Re:I want a challenge privaronT 0 11/16/2008 11:39

Although Im not overly sold on the specifics regarding ballance of the encounter I entirely get what your going for. Quite honestly this game would benifit from its content including dynamic AI patterns and a more varied use of abilities.

Thing is though I really dont feel that from a fiscal standpoint tailoring the majority of content to these type of encounters would be a sound move I will say that you are on the right track for what high end encounters against people such as Wright should be based around. If these characters are going to be rarer to interactive with than making the AI based interaction with them even with combat based encounters being scaled to require more skill and team work would be a rewarding move for not only the storyline ballance and immersion but just to include something new.

It is what it is though as someone who has done alot of high end pve fast and frankly in a group of very talented individuals who put me to shame skillwise and reaction wise I can tell you I lack the faith in MxOs AI to really develop anything of the calibur your thinking about. It's either a development issue right now or an AI one but frankly the mobs in this game are just stupid. Almost every single patch thats come out with these type of quests results in some major AI based bug that makes them a virtual joke. I hope Im wrong though.

As for your comments on the content and it being hard to complete heres my stance. Until MxO can create content that is enjoyable and on the quality of the industry standard it needs to open things up and attract people more fluidly. Long griinds are one thing. Settiing up pre requisite based road blocks with what was an age old method of storyline intel segregation takes what little mediocre content we have left and divides it up. Sure you can call a friend and run it on their scheduale whiich I used to do and can speak from experience that its kind of a pain sometimes or you can grind an alt. But thats the thing the games getting smaller setting up roadblocks and even minimal demotiivaters to subscribers is counter productiive. The current roadblocks serve no real purpose except to exist and retain some familiar tone to what is a long past system that we both agree failed.

Yes none of us dispute the fact that there was a problem that seriously needed to be adressed. My issue is, okay we have 90% less content now (using an arbitrary figure). Leaving us with 10% of what we had. Okay, that's a starting point, it is what it is and maybe we can jimmy that number up over time while we sort things out.

My objection is indeed these arbitrary roadblocks and demotivators, set up within this remaining 10%, masquerading as content!

I really can't explain it any other way. I think the pendulum has basically been too far in one direction, and the "solution" has been to swing the pendulum way too far in the exact opposite direction. Whereas the best solution in my opinion would be in between the two extremes, pragmatically taking what works from both sides.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The fact that these choices were made with the addition of what has been rumored to be Rarebit reducing his work stress really makes me wonder if this move was highly motivated to make developments job easier and more fun.

I wonder if they gave up in some regards and started looking at this as more of a job that they should tailor to work for them instead of an art mediium. Thats my biggest let down they had so much to work with being the Matrix. Heck.. a kid with an imagination and an NR board can tell a fairly good story. And we all know Rare could I remember reading some basketball story he wrote during Xmas break one time and it showed talent. I just wonder what happened.

My heart of hearts tells me this move was a gesture of giving up in alot of respects and thats the biggest let down. Maybe Im full of it however you dont really know a person and the more I think about it my posts can be a bit harsh but I guess its really easy to get the idea from both the demotivated attitude I picked up at fanfaire not to mention what I see on the boards and in game to make that assumption that the team gave up and settled in for the winter and the paycheck.

Seriously man take a look around this community or whats left of it after the last few years. I dont even thiink Vector has managed 5 Daimyo boxes total and if it has it's been by the same couple of factions that retain numbers and skilled reliable player bases which in this game is like a needle in a haystack.

Content should be variied something should be offered for everyone at least every few patches. However this MMO is really starting to evolve into a game where the top factions are able to log on ten people tops at once and thats just not going to cut it when your arguing that this MMO should be about teamwork.

Eh I think in some regards you get the wrong idea about where I stand on things because I look at it alot more grey than most. With that said I see your points and on the most simple aspects I agree with them. LESIG in its current form was an utter failure. That's not knocking the human beings that invested time in it but its just stating a fact. Promoting subscribers many of which were strong personalities that had no businuess in what arguably was a volunteer public relations job was an utter move of desperation to pawn off job responsibiilities to subscribers and buy time.

However the removal of the sub organizations was a poor move. The inclusion of them was an even poorer one. People like me you and Phrack back in the day should have been told to pound salt and never been given tags. They fed a lame duck of a situation for two and a half years and eventually the development snapped from the work load and scrapped the organizatiions entirely.

Also what I mean by this is that interactive content should have been worked on to be better not entirely removed. I feel if Rarebit had tried harder had less of a negative attitude towards the community at times and let it sneak into his work which he has admitted to us before that things could have been pushed to a higher standard. What Rarebit did was refuse to focus on character progression personal RP relationships and really maximize what he had left.

Monolith was known for their events being cool because we felt we were part of the team. Like if we owned really hard in Zion Niobe would appreciate what many of us got as a result were caddy inside digs via email along with selective perpetual handouts towards the end. The system failed for two reasons staffing which was unavoidable and the second which I hold the team fully responsible for a lack of motivation and a negative attitude that affected the game over time in this stressful job.

I dont know how many events I went to where the Live Event Character would literally just sit around afk kill mobs for screenshots and be non responsive to the community. I really get the impression he hated dealing with us at these events for awhile. Many times the LO's didnt even know what was going on at the event and they had to rely on me sending them tells to let them know what was going on. The one with Veil and crew was a perfect example. If it wasnt for Bayamos and Evalr tracking Wright and Bay telling me than me relaying it to the LO's they never would have even found the event.

The points Im trying to make here is the Live Events in their current form were in many respects a social failure just as much as a resource based one. I believe Rarebit even admitted that frankly and took some personal blame. I really feel he should have tried to approach the events and the content distribution with a more positive free flowing interactve approach before axing this entire thing and giving up on it.

Ill agree the corpse wasn't there because really the best way to look at it was a system and a very cool idea at that in desperate need of life support and I feel the development team allowed their personal issues and feelings to also motivate the choices that were made and I suppose that really just doesn't fly well with me.

So truth be told Im not going to sit here and preach doomsday this system may work out just as well as the last one did or even better but let me remind you thats not a high standard in any respect given how poorly they were done towards the end. The real thing MxO should have tried to aim for is doing a better job at what they were failing at. Not spinning fanfaire feedback which I was present at by askng Mave who was drunk as could be if he didnt like critical missiions than mocking the storyline for an hour for two days with a sarcastic tone.

You can dislike me for having such a negative attitude but you know frankly these things I have brought up have proven themselves over time. This move was just as much of a developer giving up on a hard work load as it was a logistical choice and I dont respect that a bit because this just isnt an MMO it was a creative liscence that has been butchered and watered down by personal choices.

Look I understand where you and everyone else comes from. My only gripe is at people who claim that there is no progression for the story when there is or that they can't access two thirds of it and try to make excuses as to why they shouldn't have to work at getting it. Outside of that I'm right there with you. I pointed out to Vil that while I like most of the update there is still alot of work left to be done in making this new system all it can be within MxO. The long periods of time in which there is nothing to do for everyone that's already completed and gotten everything they wanted out of that stories quest. I would take the old system over this current one any day but I still understand why it was removed.

Content seems in my eyes to be utiilizing the original launch resources and sugar coating them into something new. Outside of interactive story based content that is all I have ever seen from Rarebit outside of what I want to say was a very impressive cinematic he drew.

MxO always suffered from budget but more importantly it suffered because the existing developers left on the team lacked the education and knowlage to "make" content from thin air instead of simply recoloring items fitting them to player RSI models and deconstructing their image to create wire framed items and characters.

Eventually this method will get tired and used up because iits building on a foundation of content modding instead of the creation of new content. How long that happens is up to Rarebit however I foresee him pacing this stuff at the same pace he always did because he has a limited amount of ideas he can impliment with his limited skillset and resources.

Cinematics however in my eyes if hes capable of pushing out what he did should be a much larger focus. That was simply put the best cinematic I have seen since release. Im not a huge live action guy or 3D animatiion person with machima. I like good old fashioned creative drawing and story telling. Like Rarebit said you can do so much more with a pen and paper and some computer programs. He frankly killed it because it was longer than usual much higher quality than the crap they were churning out before with drawn cinematics and it actually did some plot things instead of teasing the player wiith a poorly drawn 30 second clip like the old ones.

Next time a system isn't working my personal gut feeling is that cutting out existing content forms replacing them with limited new ones and removing certian ones completely to ease things up is a bad idea.

The corpse is GONE. Again go back and read Vinia's post. We haven't had a real "dynamic" story telling system since LET and even then it was only the Neurophye event which was a joke for the servers that decided to kill her. This isn't some brutal annihilation of some broken being its a replacement for a broken malfunctioning and waste of resource system with one that works and has been proven to work.

The existing content before this update was more and more going unused and uninteresting. You can see a dramatic decrease in the live event discussions int he past year and quiet a few people were not even running the weekly crits. Why keep a system that the majority of the player base isn't even using?

Vinia's post is technically true, but her point is a semantic one and not what we are trying to get across.

I'm looking at the Big Picture here. Actions have consequences that may not be evident right away.

The issue is that people are complaining that they can't access 2/3rds the story when they can. You don't need to grind to 50, you can get on a lvl 5 alt and ask someone from that org to run it while you tag along.

Vinia's post pointed out that this game hasn't been "dynamic" for a long long time. You have been arguing that this last update killed that. How can you kill something that wasn't there to begin with?

Obviously not because if you were you would see that the old system wasn't working. It limited the big picture to only adding small tiny pieces to it while using a large amount of time to out daily events that more and more people were not attending or caring about. I can't count how many times I've read on these forums or talked to people that said they hadn't run their crits sense 8.1 for any org. Old system was screaming to be put out of its misery and was causeing just as many people to leave. Come to think of it privaronT's thread is the only "good bye" thread I hve seen sense this update.

I feel like its kind of like somone who has a hard job that requires a lot of heavy lifting, and their arms are always sore; so they decide the best solution is to amputate their arms, instead of pacing themselves and doing things more ergonamically.

You forgot the part where a certian union that starts with an L sticks up for the laborer because their reliant on power and tiime investment which their hoping a postive disposition will  reward eventually.

That's why I take everythng with a grain of salt. When half your power personalites in MxO are on the take by being given out player program powers its really hard to get a good read...

My advice Viil do what I did just stop caring dude.. trying to disect the finer points of a quality entertainment experience to these people is like trying to sit through dinner with a lobbyist and get a straight answer.

Well see Marci and Ill miss you to With that said well see... Honestly I'm torn at this point I still really want to play MxO but I just dont frankly see alot of motivation to invest 45 bucks on three accounts "hint hint" or just "make believe".

See in my opinion the storyline and interactivity was the only driving thing for this game.  Im no longer motivated by the game itself the roleplay with official entities such as LESIG and the LE characters but mainly just everyone in general. The natural evolution of a declining population on a pvp server has slightly shifted what I used to really value as an immersive experience.

Also as we all know some of us better than others LESIG is a very loosely monitored program. Over the months I experienced a few nasty episodes regarding some of these people interjecting what Ill admit is a very fair negative disposition towards me. Im not an easy person to like. However it goes without saying that this is a subscription based service. It's something I invested a very large amount of my free time into over the years off and on and its something I paid easily hundreds of dollars to enjoy over the years.

You see I have very little faith in the quality level prior to the changes in regards to monitoring of outbursts blacklists and the watering down of accomplishments or reward relocation due to personal issues. In many cases I had VERY reliable proof that was never even responded to. Im not sure if this was a spite move or desperation which resulted in noone being handled for obvious rule breaches but I suppose some of the bitterness you all saw from me towards the game and community eventually was a result of this.

Now were in a new chapter of both LESIG and game content distribution. Although I find the quest medium to be an improvement along with the cinematics even if they mean less live events I find the destruction of the sub organizations frankly a move of desperate laziness. I did say in my previous post I feel its a step forward for storytelling but at the end of the day this is a subscription based service that has built its model around interactive content for years. That's something that I no longer have the option to enjoy on a quest based level as a Cypherite or a interactive one.

Another motivating factor would be the destruction of LESIG in its current form. If anything this opens the door to making the program logisticlly nothing more than a PET with bitter subscribers at the helm who are being used to essentially be our monkeys with a tamborine. Honestly I cant sit here and say I would do any better of a job but when you build half of your content model around manipulatable content distribution given out from hand picked subscribers which is vulnerable to leaks as well as a content experience that can decline depending on the persons personal feelings towards you reducing both support and regulation for such a program is only a negative in my eyes.

In many respects I feel this game can only get worse guys. If we really sit back as people and not RSIs with grudges or an angle to work I think most of us can safely make the assumption MxO has been more about damage control over the years instead of fixing problems and increasing the quality of our experience. I do continue to directly blame human beings and their obvious choices that resulted in this but that is what it is and Im entitled to my opinion as Im sure it varies in its extreme nature.

Either way even if someone waved a magic wand and SOE I doubt I could play with any real motivation like I did before. I am starting a new job next week going back to college spring semester which let me assure you has been a really fun uphill battle and frankly just spending what time I used to gaming with RL freinds. This game brings more stress and dissapointment than it does enjoyment for many of us including me these days. Like you all said I may and you know for 15 bucks a month I prolly will sucker a freind into paying my sub to see the game one of these days when were sitting around the family room blazed watching the Matrix but truthfully guys if my gut is right what has eventually pushed me to leave the game is simply put going to increase over time.

PS. You two Ducker I hope you realize all trash talking aside from both sides PDS is one of the few factions I really walk away wth a ton of respect for as pvpers and just gamers in MxO.

Yeah I have to agree watering down what little inclusive content or combat change we can look forward to is a bit odd. My advice is work towards natural progression of the system to guide your tournament it makes it more fun and varied. People will have to invest time to win not just use the same old clothes and tactics they did back in the day.

Let's just say it blocks the game after you finish it. You could probably reload a previous save though. If you don't want to end the game, when Sentinal Lyons asks if you are ready... say no... then finish doing what ever quests / exploring you want to finish.

See that just really kills the immersion for me though. I changed my characters hair in Little Lamplight and was adhering to the rule two main quests a day tops than leveling and free exploration and it just feels kind of rushed.

There was no follow up to Mr President and that really bothered me. I thought that was like the start to a new chapter in the game regarding AI high tech computer stuff. The fact that those character models were wasted like that as the base looked so cool was a huge let down.

Speaking of which, I'm almost finished, I guess. Taking my time with it.

Yeah take your time. Honestly I had no idea it was the final quest. I had always heard that the option presented itself to work for the Enclave so I was like YAY NOW I GET TO WORK FOR MR PRESIDENT!

Than the best I get treated to is a freaking 5 second mentioned cinematic that plays out differently depending on major choices within the game.
