Not sure about The Last Free City. Sounds nice and it doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, but it's a different community. Would the migration of the MxO community to the LFC community really work out? The MxO community is distinctive; we know each other, we have our own RP and the like. Cohabiting with another community wouldn't work out too well if you ask me. It wouldn't be a natural place to, say, continue our RP (for those who care). Great for general Matrix stuff, but not for MxO.

ShiXinFeng wrote: I've tried this using the mirroring/backup tool that SuperJenius pointed me to. The problem, as I see it thus far, is that it only backs up the main page of the forums. I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to backup every single page of these forums. If someone wants to do it, the website copier program (freeware) is at http://www.httrack.com/. You install it, point it to the website you want to backup, and it downloads the whole thing to a folder on your hard drive. If someone can get the whole forum, I can host it and make the links work. But it will only be a copy, I think. I doubt it will mirror the SOE forums engine and database. At least, that was my impression from using it for an hour or so.
I've been meaning to give that program a proper go. But you're right: it won't back up the database, just the pages. And my guess is that it won't do it very efficiently. If someone manages to back it all up that way I could probably have a go at parsing all the pages and dumping it back into a database. It wouldn't be perfect, but at least we'd be able to navigate it more naturally and we'd get the search function to work.

I'd be more than happy to host it, but us potential archivists need to work together in the initial stages or we'll all have our own disparate boards and fragment the community. I fear if I just go ahead and make a forum, it'll only be so successful. Blackjack-18 wrote: WTB - DN1 Forum backup? Or the script database backup at least....
This is something we definitely need. I don't think it would be a good idea to bung the backup into the post-MxO board, though. As nice as it would be to essentially continue where we left off, these forums are huge and would put a serious strain on whoever hosted them if they were active. Far better to have the DN1 forums as a static archive, and have a separate, active post-MxO forum.

I'd care. I can't stand free boards. There are several people - myself included - who have the resources to host forums, and have no reason to ever close them (i.e. the cost is marginal or nonexistent). It's then a matter of trusting that person to not show any bias. You'd have to deal with that issue wherever the forums are hosted though; there's always going to be one person ultimately in control.

I'm sure they said there'd be no more customer support for MxO beginning June the 1st. So... we may be screwed. Of course, if that's the case I'm not going to believe for one second that this foul-up was a genuine accident.

Server isn't doing much? It does almost everything. The local client just has the content and processes the interactions. Anything to do with choosing and serving content and dealing with the consequences of interactions is handled by the server. Maybe if they just gave us a limited clone of the server and partnered it with the client. They'd just point the client and server to each other directly rather than across the Net. And they'd have to strip out anything relating to SOE's network (e.g. the player database and chat system). More than SOE can manage right now.

I suppose someone (*glances at Bay*) could get a single-player client working, but it would be extremely limited. Maybe we could run around the world, and that's it. No NPCs, no missions, no vendors, nothing. Just the world geometry, our character (probably naked) and maybe the weather cycle.

Something along the lines of the "Tactical Simulator" on this website. As long as it was purely fan-based, I don't think any legal issues would arise. It'd be a place where we could register accounts, continue our RP, and still implement some form of progress... but maybe that's just another pipe dream.
Combined with the storytelling tools of the TGS site and an interactive hovercraft battles system and it'd be the Best Thing Ever. That'd be a massive undertaking, though. (I really should stop responding to posts like this. It's gone and got me all excited at the mere idea of it.) ShiXinFeng wrote: I think the franchise will slip into a coma after MxO closes. . .but it will be reawakened when someone realizes the potential for a television series. I can't shake the irrational fear that any such TV series will be a soppy, angsty mess aimed at teenagers.

If I had my way, I'd keep all faction Web sites alive, and we could continue RP on forums and in writing. Progress on the Glitch Society site juddered to a halt about two years ago, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be completed at some stage, and there'll always be a place there for RP. Even if it's just me.

This is absurd. One final slap in the face from SOE, giving us four days to resubscribe before they lock us out. Are they that dedicated to ticking us off that they're willing to lose hundreds - possibly thousands - of dollars in people coming back for the last hoorah? I'm struggling to understand the sheer stupidity.

I'll take a few days to think of the thank yous, but Shinryu had a good idea in thinking that I might have stuff to say about my years in the LESIG and the stuff I did. Maybe surprising to some who only saw me through Vogt, I can be pretty vocal on issues that I take at heart (this might even be an understatement to people who saw me in the LESIG!), so yeah, expect something much more consistent in the next days!
One thing I've always wondered: were the occasional linguistic... er, hiccups genuine mistakes or was it an act, all part of the character that is Vogt? Looking forward to some behind-the-scenes info!

I can't think of any automated way to mirror a site, but there probably is a script or program somewhere that can trawl a site, copy its contents and generate the necessary new links. That wouldn't work with something like a forum, though, 'cos it's always changing, and you'd end up with a pretty mess that you'd have to clean up. And then there are the copyright concerns. ¬_¬
